Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proprietors of Carolina In June, 1578, when Queen Elizabeth I made a generous grant of New World territory to Sir Humphrey Gilbert, she included the area which has since become North Carolina. In return for the Queen's bountiful gift, Gilbert was to lead an expedition to America to destroy hostile Spanish fishing fleets, take the West Indies from Spain, seize the gold and silver mines in the Spanish colonies, and make Elizabeth monarch of the seas. On his first trip to America, Gilbert was rebuffed by the Spanish, and he never returned from his second. His grant was renewed on March 24, 1584, in the name of his half-brother, Walter Raleigh, who was given authority to establish colonies and to govern them. Raleigh financed several expeditions to the New World including those which explored eastern North Carolina late in the sixteenth cen tury. The famous Lost Colony at Roanoke Island was Raleigh's last attempt to plant a settlement in America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina: A Study in English Colonial Government As far as the author is aware, this is the first study from the original sources of the provincial government of North Carolina embracing the whole period, and from the point of view of England as well as that of the colony. Four of the ten chapters were published, in a very limited edition, during the year 1901, but in form of statement these have been changed in a decided manner. To Professor Herbert L. Osgood, of Columbia University, the author acknowledges his profound gratitude for assistance rendered in many ways. The kind assistance of Professors Kemp Plummer Battle, Henry Horace Williams and Edward Kidder Graham, of the University of North Carolina, in reading the manuscript and proof is also acknowledged. Book The Carolinians an Old Fashioned Love Story of Stirring Times in the Early Colony of Carolina Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carolinians an Old-Fashioned Love Story of Stirring Times in the Early Colony of Carolina In narrating the public incidents of their lives wherein they distinguished themselves, I have carefully followed the old records and best established authorities. Their private lives as here depicted are purely fiction. That there were great chivalry, steadfast endurance and splendid courage among those men upon whom the royal gift of Charles the Second devolved we cannot doubt, and to believe that there were heroes among them is an inspiring belief for us who live today and draw our blood and inspiration from those men whose motto was ever noblesse oblige. Should some who read these pages make afterwards a pilgrimage to a neglected comer of old St. Philip's, Charleston, S. C., and find for themselves the graves of those intrepid old leaders, Gov. Robert Johnson and C01. William Rhett, this story will at least have revived a grateful remembrance of great and good men who were faithful in peace and brave in war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Olden Time of Carolina Abashed by the equitable precept let those teach others, who themselves excel, I have scarcely dared to present the following pages to your attention, aware, how fairly I am putting it in the power of my readers to ask, in the searching words of an eminent prelate, 'you who write thus and advise thus, do you do thus Alas, no! And yet although it be but little good that I may be allowed to do, the very aim is right and may be blessed. First, then, I would have you never forget the beautiful teachings of Sir Matthew Hale, that the fear of God begins with the heart and purifies and rectifies it; and that from the heart, thus rectified, grows a conformity in the life, the words and the actions. Well convinced am I, that there are many of you who require not so much to be informed as reminded, a remembrancer is often more useful than an instructor the office, although more humble, is scarcely less necessary, and I am persuaded that if ever my plain admonitions are allowed to make their due impression, they cannot fail to produce a salutary effect upon some of you, my youthful readers keeping you safe, even in the midst of an ensnaring world, active and zealous in the discharge of duties, with minds ever dis posed to dwell on subjects of solemn interest.
