Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important natural resource Texas has is Texans. Unfortunately, the state suffers from a "brain drain" as many of the best and brightest students leave to further their education. A contributing cause is a lack of "tier one" universities in Texas. Proposition 4 (a constitutional amendment to create a National Research University Fund to help fund certain state universities to become nationally recognized research institutions) would provide funding to Texas universities seeking to attain tier-one status. With more university research, the state hopes for new jobs, increased wages, and more state and local tax revenue. This Policy Page describes criteria commonly used to determine tier-one status, the benefits of having more tier-one universities in Texas, progress of selected Texas schools toward tier-one status, and the specifics of Proposition 4.

Book excerpt: "Every serious student of woman suffrage must take account of this vital contemporary document, which tells the story of the struggle for woman suffrage in America from the first woman's rights convention in 1848 to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Originally published in 1923, it gives the inside story of this remarkable movement, told by two ardent suffragists: Carrie Chapman Catt (of whom the New York Times wrote, 'More than anyone else she turned Woman Suffrage from a dream into a fact') and Nettie Rogers Shuler. Writing from vivid recollection, the authors offer some of their own ideas about what caused the United States to be the twenty-seventh country to give the vote to women when she ought 'by rights' to have been the first"--Unedited summary from book cover.

Book New Essays on the Nature of Propositions

Download or read book New Essays on the Nature of Propositions written by David Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are exciting times for philosophical theorizing about propositions, with the last 15 years seeing the development of new approaches and the emergence of new theorists. Propositions have been invoked to explain thought and cognition, the nature and attribution of mental states, language and communication, and in philosophical treatments of truth, necessity and possibility. According to Frege and Russell, and their followers, propositions are structured mind- and language-independent abstract objects which have essential and intrinsic truth-conditions. Some recent theorizing doubts whether propositions really exist and, if they do, asks how we can grasp, entertain and know them? But most of the doubt concerns whether the abstract approach to propositions can really explain them. Are propositions really structured, and if so where does their structure come from? How does this structure form a unity, and does it need to? Are the representational and structural properties of propositions really independent of those of thinking and language? What does it mean to say that an object occurs in or is a constituent of a proposition? The volume takes up these and other questions, both as they apply to the abstract object approach and also to the more recently developed approaches. While the volume as a whole does not definitively and unequivocally reject the abstract objection approach, for the most part, the papers explore new critical and constructive directions. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Philosophy.

Book Necessity Lost

  • Author : Sanford Shieh
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-03-21
  • ISBN : 0192568809
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Necessity Lost written by Sanford Shieh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long tradition, going back to Aristotle, conceives of logic in terms of necessity and possibility: a deductive argument is correct if it is not possible for the conclusion to be false when the premises are true. A relatively unknown feature of the analytic tradition in philosophy is that, at its very inception, this venerable conception of the relation between logic and necessity and possibility - the concepts of modality - was put into question. The founders of analytic philosophy, Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell, held that these concepts are empty: there are no genuine distinctions among the necessary, the possible, and the actual. In this book, the first of two volumes, Sanford Shieh investigates the grounds of this position and its consequences for Frege's and Russell's conceptions of logic. The grounds lie in doctrines on truth, thought, and knowledge, as well as on the relation between mind and reality, that are central to the philosophies of Frege and Russell, and are of enduring philosophical interest. The upshot of this opposition to modality is that logic is fundamental, and, to be coherent, modal concepts would have to be reconstructed in logical terms. This rejection of modality in early analytic philosophy remains of contemporary significance, though the coherence of modal concepts is rarely questioned nowadays because it is generally assumed that suspicion of modality derives from logical positivism, which has not survived philosophical scrutiny. The anti-modal arguments of Frege and Russell, however, have nothing to do with positivism and remain a challenge to the contemporary acceptance of modal notions.

Book Driveline Systems of Ground Vehicles

Download or read book Driveline Systems of Ground Vehicles written by Alexandr F. Andreev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With this book, Prof. Dr. Vantsevich brings a tremendous contribution to the field of Automotive Transmission and Driveline Engineering, including his innovative methods for optimum driveline synthesis, as well as his experience with the development of various hardware solutions, from the basic limited slip differentials to the most sophisticated mechatronic systems." —Dr.-Ing. Mircea Gradu Director, Transmission and Driveline Engineering Head, Virtual Analysis Tools Chrysler Group LLC ? Now that vehicles with four and more driving wheels are firmly ensconced in the consumer market, they must provide energy/fuel-saving benefits and improved operational quality including terrain mobility, traction and velocity properties, turnability, and stability of motion. A first-of-its-kind resource, Driveline Systems of Ground Vehicles: Theory and Design presents a comprehensive and analytical treatment of driveline research, design, and tests based on energy efficiency, vehicle dynamics, and operational properties requirements. This volume addresses fundamental engineering problems including how to investigate the effect of different driveline systems on the properties of vehicles and how to determined the optimal characteristics of the driveline system and its power-dividing units (PDUs) and design it for a specific vehicle to ensure high level of vehicle dynamics, energy efficiency, and performance. The authors develop an analytical apparatus for math modeling of driveline systems that can be compiled from different types of PDUs. They also introduce methodologies for the synthesis of optimal characteristics of PDUs for different types of vehicles. Structured to be useful to engineers of all levels of experience, university professors and graduate students, the book is based on the R&D projects conducted by the authors. It explores intriguing engineering dilemmas such as how to achieve higher energy and fuel efficiency by driving either all the wheels or not all the wheels, solve oversteering issues by managing wheel power distribution, and many other technical problems.
