Book The Prophethood of All Believers

Download or read book The Prophethood of All Believers written by Roger Stronstad and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries Christians have had the concept of the priesthood of all believers firmly engrained in their minds. The prophethood of all believers, on the other hand, is, so Stronstad believes, the main focus of Spirit-baptism in Luke-Acts. A landmark study in Lukan pneumatology, this book is aimed at a mixed readership ranging from the scholar to the informed layperson. The role of the Spirit in Luke is clearly portrayed in terms of vocational empowerment. Traditionally, Lukan pneumatology has been viewed through Pauline or Johannine spectacles, but by interpreting Luke independently of the other Gospels and the epistles, Stronstad has cogently argued for the historical and contemporary relevance of Spirit-baptism. He challenges the reader to develop a new appreciation of Luke's theology of the Holy Spirit, and, in fact, to consider the role of the prophethood of all believers for today's world.

Book Prophecy and Politics in South African Pentecostalism

Download or read book Prophecy and Politics in South African Pentecostalism written by Mookgo Solomon Kgatle and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between prophecy and politics in South African Pentecostalism. The role and the power of prophecy in enhancing the presence of politicians in the church square are unpacked through historical examples, as well as case studies of contemporary prophets. Solomon Kgatle argues that the influence of prophecy in politics has the potential to weaken the prophetic voice of the church in general and the Pentecostal movement in particular. He proposes a Pentecostal political theology of prophecy. This theology is developed by taking into cognizance the theoretical and theological frameworks of prophetic imagination and pneumatological imagination. In addition, this theology seeks a balance between prophecy and power and prophecy and sovereignty.

Book The Practice of Prophecy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Li Ming Dennis Lum
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2018-03-26
  • ISBN : 1532618409
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book The Practice of Prophecy written by Li Ming Dennis Lum and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charisma of prophecy is found throughout the history of the global Pentecostal movement. Within the movement, prophecy is seen as the communication of an inspired, spontaneous revelation, bringing edification to the faith community. Despite its prevalence, academic research has mostly focused on the biblical-theological aspect, neglecting the actual contemporary practice. This book addresses this gap with a study on the practice of prophecy within the Assemblies of God of Singapore. The book investigates the nature, purpose, and significance of the phenomenon. It also identifies theological variables that are correlated with its practice and explicates these relationships. The investigation employs the empirical-theological method of Johannes van der Ven, utilizing both a qualitative and a quantitative study. The results provide a rich description of the actual reception, delivery, and judging of prophecy. Significant findings include relationships between prophecy and courage, love, personality types, prayer types, and evangelism.

Download or read book Pentecostal Prophets written by Stephen D. Barkley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets come in many varieties--ecstatic worshipers, inspired preachers, social justice advocates, and even political pundits. Their messages vary accordingly. The purpose of this book is to dig beneath the message to understand the how. How do modern-day prophets experience the prophetic impulse? The phenomenological study at the core of this book answers that question directly by examining the experience of Canadian Pentecostals. From there, the experience of modern-day prophets is compared with Old Testament prophets, with special attention given to Jeremiah. It turns out that prophets today share in the same experience as their Old Testament predecessors. This book can benefit three audiences. For the academy, this work provides the first phenomenological study of prophecy in Canada. For pastors, reading this book will be an exercise in empathy, placing you in the shoes of the prophets in your congregation, helping you to understand what goes on when someone prophesies. For everyday prophets, this book will affirm your connection, through Jesus, to the Old Testament prophetic tradition, enabling you to read those Old Testament books in a new experiential light.

Book The Priesthood of All Believers

Download or read book The Priesthood of All Believers written by Cyril Eastwood and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Priesthood of all Believers underlies all the great and far-reaching religious movements of the last five hundred years. Apart from that doctrine it is impossible either to understand or appreciate the cause of the Reformation, the impetus of the Puritan Movement, or the widespread influence of the Evangelical Revival. Yet nowhere can the student find a thorough examination of its meaning, for no such systematic statement exists. Here is an attempt to fill this gap. An examination of Reformation Theology shows that this doctrine is the basis of three dominant concepts which Luther stressed--Faith, Word, and Congregation--and that Luther's seven marks of the true Church arise from it. A study of Calvin leads to the conclusion that the doctrine of vocation is the necessary counterpart of the Priesthood of all Believers, that election is always related to consecration, service, and mission; it is an election to priesthood. An investigation of Wesley shows that he took this doctrine seriously and provided opportunities for the People of God to exercise their priestly privileges in the service of the Word, of the Church, and of the World. From all this comes the inescapable conclusion that in Reformation Theology the spiritual priesthood of justified believers consists in their proclamation of God's justifying love to the world. This book is an attempt to present a clear and constructive statement of a doctrine which lies at the very heart of Protestantism and is closely connected with three important issues in current theological discussion--the union of the Churches, the doctrine of vocation, and the liturgical revival.

Book Pentecostal Exorcism

  • Author : Opoku Onyinah
  • Publisher : BRILL

Download or read book Pentecostal Exorcism written by Opoku Onyinah and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Witchcraft" and exorcism have long been dominant features of life in African cultures. This unique book provides a thorough, field research-based description and analysis of a specifically Pentecostal Christian response to these phenomena within the Akan culture of Ghana. Anthropological studies generally claim that the ultimate goal of exorcism is modernisation. Using interdisciplinary studies with a theological focus, the author takes a different view, arguing that it is divinatory consultation or an inquiry into the sacred and the search for meaning that underlies the current "deliverance" ministry, where the focus is to identify and break down the so-called demonic forces by the power of God and to "deliver" people from their torment. The deliverance ministry is one attempt to contextualise the gospel for African people. However, preoccupation with demonisation and exorcistic practices is found to bring Christianity into tension with the Akan culture, family ties and other religions. In order to develop a properly safeguarded ministry of exorcism in an African context, the author examines contextualisation and suggests the integration into African Christianity of divinatory consultation, which has strong resonances with the biblical concept of prayer.

Book The Charismatic Theology of St Luke

Download or read book The Charismatic Theology of St Luke written by Roger Stronstad and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning of the Holy Spirit's activity in Luke-Acts, and what are its implications for today? Roger Stronstad offers a cogent and thought-provoking study of Luke as a charismatic theologian whose understanding of the Spirit was shaped wholly by his understanding of Jesus and the nature of the early church. Stronstad locates Luke's pneumatology in the historical background of Judaism and views Luke as an independent theologian who makes a unique contribution to the pneumatology of the New Testament. This work challenges traditional Protestants to reexamine the impact of Pentecost and explores the Spirit's role in equipping God's people for the unfinished task of mission. The second edition has been revised and updated throughout and includes a new foreword by Mark Allan Powell.
