Book The Modelling of Microstructure and its Potential for Studying Transport Properties and Durability

Download or read book The Modelling of Microstructure and its Potential for Studying Transport Properties and Durability written by H. Jennings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From July 10th through July 13th, 1994, an informal workshop co-organized by RILEM committees 116-PCD and 123-MME was held at Saint-Remy-Ies Chevreuse, France, and attended by 38 delegates from 16 countries. Twenty-nine papers were presented, converging the general subjects of modelling micro structures and predicting durability of concrete and other cement-based materials. A short summary follows: G. M. Idom's paper entitled "Modelling Research for Concrete Engineering" serves as an introduction to the workshop, presenting an overview of modelling research with the conelusion that the broad practica1 objective is to produce high-quality concrete. This means that many characteristics, ranging from rheology to alkali-silica reaction, must be modelled. In other words, the system must be understood. Idom's paper sets the stage for papers in two general areas: 1) models and 2) transport properties. After this, abrief survey of the develop ment of microstructurally-based models is presented. A elose relationship between computer power and speed is suggested. The first group of papers on models covers the subjects of scale and resolution. Most models define and predict characteristics of the pore system, which range in scale from nanometer to millimeter. Various types ofnetworks are proposed in these papers. A good microstructural model must describe the pores and other phases at ascale appropriate to the properties that the model predicts. Also, a good model should be based on fundamental knowledge. In the case of cement-based materials, the important properties may depend on the microstructure, especially the porosity, at several scales.

Book The Uniformity and Influence of Silica Fume from a U S Source on the Properties of Portland Cement Concrete

Download or read book The Uniformity and Influence of Silica Fume from a U S Source on the Properties of Portland Cement Concrete written by MF. Pistilli and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silica fume is formed during the manufacture of ferrosilicon in electric submerged-arc furnaces. The use of silica fume has been evaluated in portland cement concrete. Thirty samples of silica fume, each collected on consecutive days from SKW Alloys, Inc. in Calvert City, KY, were analyzed for routine quality control tests of a pozzolan. Six of these samples, representing the variations of the routine tests, were tested for complete ASTM Specification for Fly Ash and Raw or Calcined Natural Pozzolan for Use as a Mineral Admixture in Portland Cement Concrete (C 618) conformance. Laboratory mixtures of air-entrained and nonair-entrained concrete, containing a representative sample of silica fume, were cast for compressive strength (1 to 120 days), drying shrinkage, and time of set. Although a classification for silica fume is not currently contained in ASTM C 618, all of the samples tested were found to conform when compared to the requirements of this standard, with the exception that the water requirement was excessive.

Book Investigation of Concrete Containing Condensed Silica Fume

Download or read book Investigation of Concrete Containing Condensed Silica Fume written by Hamdi Celik Ozyildirim and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of hydraulic cement concretes containing silica fume were investigated to assess their suitability for use in overlays with s minimum thickness of 1 1/4 in. The properties studied were compressive and flexural strengths, bond strength, modulus of elasticity, permeability, freeze-thaw resistance, thermal expansion, and drying shrinkage. The characteristics of sir voids in the hardened concrete were determined by petrographic examination. The study was conducted in two stages: the first to determine the mixture proportions that would yield satisfactorily high strengths and low permeabilities, and the second to conduct the main testing program. Silica fume from two sources was used. Concretes made with silica fume from either source at a water-cement ratio of 0.40 or lower and s replacement rate of 5% yielded the desirable properties. It is expected that concretes made with silica fume can provide a cost-effective protective system for bridge decks when placed in overlays with s minimum thickness of 1 1/4 in.
