A large number of second language learners believe that the main difficulty they encounter when speaking the second language is pronunciation and consider this difficulty as the main source for their communication problems. English occupies a high status among world international languages, as it has become the language of diplomacy, trade, communication, technology and business. Thus, learning English provides the person with an advantage as an active participant in today’s world, opening new horizons to a better future. English as an international language has been taught in almost all countries in the world. In Arab countries English is a foreign language which is a compulsory subject to be taught in all schools from lower secondary to upper secondary schools. Even in some elementary schools, English is offered as an elective subject. However, we have seen that the proficiency in English of secondary school graduates still creates disappointment among teachers themselves as well as parents. The unsatisfying quality of English in Arab countries of course is related to different variables. I have tried to shed light on one of these variables here. That is to say, the causes behind the errors committed in pronunciation and grammar in English language by the Arab learners. The importance of investigating pronunciation and grammar difficulties stems from the fact that, it stands as an obstacle in communication. However, it is necessary, in this research, to find out why the aforesaid learners face difficulty in the acquisition of the phonological system and grammatical structure of any non-native language.

Book excerpt: Both experimental and anecdotal evidence document the difficulty Arabic learners of English demonstrate when learning to read and write in English. The complex phoneme-grapheme mapping rules for English may explain this difficulty in part, but the question remains why Arabic learners in particular have difficulty decoding English. This dissertation attempts to pinpoint what specific sub-word processes may contribute to this observed difficulty Arabic learners of English commonly experience. Vowel processing is an appropriate place to begin given the inconsistency of the grapheme-phoneme mapping rules for English vowels. The statisical patterns of the English language itself for the relationship between the onset and vowel or vowel and coda greatly enhance the likelihood of a particular vowel pronunciation, reducing the inconsistency for vowel grapheme-phoneme mappings. When reading, native English speakers use the context (preceding and following consonants) in which a vowel occurs to narrow the range of possible pronunciations, and thus are said to demonstrate sensitivity to consonantal context. For this dissertation, sensitivity to consonantal context in reading English vowels was tested in three groups (Arabic speakers, native English speakers, and speakers from other language backgrounds) using an experiment based on prior studies of native English speakers. Results indicate that non-native speakers of English show less sensitivity to consonantal context than native English speakers, especially in the greater use of the critical vowel pronunciation in control contexts. Furthermore, Arabic speakers show even less sensitivity to consonantal context than both the native English speakers and speakers from other language backgrounds, especially for vowel-to-coda associations. In fact, the results for the Arabic speakers for three of six vowel-to-coda test cases run counter to the expected outcome, resulting in what might be called an anti-sensitivity to consonantal context. The small number of participants in the Arabic group limits the ability to draw a strong conclusion, but that the results for the Arabic group run opposite the expected outcome for some test items warrants future study.

Book excerpt: It is known that adult language learners often struggle to accurately pronounce unfamiliar sounds in the target language, but the extent and duration of the linguistic experience is found to affect native-like production of target segments. In order to explore the variability in speech production between language learners, I compare vowel production between heritage speakers of Arabic (HSs) and English L2 learners. More importantly, this phonetic investigation asks fundamental research questions such as: Whether one or two phonetic/phonological systems coexist in the mental organization of developing bilinguals? If early childhood exposure to the target language as experienced by HSs affects phonetic learning later in life, e.g., when the HS is an adult learner in a traditional classroom setting? Moreover, do bilinguals of varying proficiency levels process their languages in the same way? Depending on the linguistic experience, prior studies of speech production show that bilingual speakers may possess one or two phonetic/phonological systems for the two languages. Furthermore, exposure to the L2 in early childhood facilitates attainment of native-like L2 phone production. Specifically, Flege (1987), Mack (1989), and Guion (2002) show that early bilinguals are capable of acquiring fine-grained phonetic detail of their L2 more than late learners. In the present study, 12 HSs0́4 6 experienced (EHSs) and 6 inexperienced (IHSs(0́4as well as 12 L2 learners0́4 6 advanced (AL2) and 6 beginner (BL2)0́4were compared with 6 native speakers of Arabic. Subjects produced 2 repetitions for each of 114 CVC monosyllabic words, embedded medially in a fixed carrier phrase. Formant measures of F1 and F2 were taken (in Bark) at vowel midpoint. Unlike the L2 learners, the results reveal that HSs have acquired two phonetic/phonological systems for Arabic and English, demonstrating the significance of childhood exposure to target sounds in later phonetic attainment. Specifically, more experience in the target language results in more accurate vowel production as shown by EHSs producing values that are closer to target vowels than IHSs and so is the case for AL2 compared to BL2 learners. Presenting a great challenge for language educators and language programs in the United States, implications from comparing these distinct populations (HSs and L2 learners) are discussed in relation to phonological theory, specifically, the intersection between second language research (SLA) and teaching of heritage language instruction.
