Download or read book The Balanced Development Index for Europe s OECD Countries 1999 2017 written by Andrzej K. Koźmiński and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the Balanced Development Index (BDI), measuring socioeconomic development in twenty-two European OECD member countries in a period 1999-2017. Compared to other composite measures of development, BDI looks beyond traditional development indicators, such as GDP, to create an index which gives equal weight to social, economic, objective, and subjective aspects of development. The BDI aggregates forty-two detailed indicators into four composite middle-level indexes: external economic (characterizing functioning of national economies in their international surroundings), internal economic (characterizing various aspects of domestic economic conditions), social expectations (public hopes and fears concerning economic, political and social conditions), and current social condition (including both objective and subjective social indicators)—which are, in turn, aggregated into the general BDI index.

This report addresses the challenges encountered and the efforts and progress made by the international community as it strives to reach its goal. The countries are measured by basic indicators, nutritional status, health status, educational levels, demographics, economic indicators, the status of women and the rate of progress on major indicators since 1960. Book excerpt: The book is a precious reference book for development economics or the political economy of development in Asia or anywhere else. Unlike other books, first, it deals with all the East Asian countries, including Japan and other Asian countries. Second, it offers some empirical research findings based on surveys conducted by the author's group. Research on developing countries has been limited by individual scholars' observations, particularly about the value-related issues like politics or religions. Thirdly, the book digs into the nation-building problems which are often neglected by economists. It bridges the politics, sociology and economics in East Asian countries and is an important reference book for graduate students. Download or read book TRIPS Agreement of the WTO written by Mohammad Towhidul Islam and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the application of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) in the fields of agriculture, public health and economic development in a Least Developed Country (LDC) such as Bangladesh. In particular, it evaluates the question whether the TRIPS’ one-size-fits-all approach compulsorily applicable for all countries, irrespective of their development standing, fulfils the developmental needs of Bangladesh and other such LDCs in the fields of agriculture, public health and economic development. The book shows that the TRIPS’ introduction of IPRs in the name of Plant Varieties Protection (PVP) and patents not only secures private sector investment in agriculture but also brings traditional agricultural practices within the spectrum of private monopoly, increases the price of agricultural products and forces people into dependency on engineered seeds and other agricultural inputs. To guard against such trade rules, this book recommends that Bangladesh should incorporate the TRIPS flexibilities in the form of redefining patentable invention, choosing between patents and PVP and providing for compulsory licensing. This book also reveals that the TRIPS patenting in pharmaceuticals encourages innovations by ensuring royalty collections and protects public health by raising standards of living. However, patenting offers exclusivity to pharmaceutical companies, extending the duration of the patent term and establishing their control over production, supply and distribution. Such control results in exclusivity over drug pricing. The flexibilities of the compliance deadline, compulsory licensing, and parallel importation built into the TRIPS are set to tackle untenable situations arising from patenting exclusivity. However, patent laws in most LDCs are out-dated in terms of dealing with such flexibilities. Given this, the research recommends that Bangladesh should invoke the TRIPS flexibilities. The author of this book further establishes that the TRIPS’ standard-setting in agriculture and pharmaceuticals does not help the country to fulfil subsistence needs or promote economic development through innovation. However, the appropriation of agricultural and pharmaceutical goods during the use of the TRIPS flexibilities has the potential to feed the people, protect public health interests and increase economic development with the supply of food and drugs at home and abroad. To this end, the research asks Bangladesh to reform its existing IPRs provisions by redefining patentable inventions and simplifying compulsory licensing and other differential treatments to appropriate foreign technologies.

Book The Development of Aid

Download or read book The Development of Aid written by Gerard Van Bilzen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aid to developing countries started well before World War II, but was undertaken as an ad hoc activity or was delivered by private organizations. This changed after the War. In his Inaugural Address in 1949, the American President, Harry Truman, announced a “bold new programme for making the benefits of our scientific advances and industrial progress available for the improvement and growth of underdeveloped nations” (the so-called “Point IV” Plan). At that time it was thought that this support would be needed only for a limited number of years, comparable to the Marshall Plan assistance to Europe. But reality proved to be different: providing aid was a very long-term affair. Since the Fifties, the aid provided has changed at different occasions. In the beginning, aid concentrated on constructing infrastructure, such as roads, railways, dams, and harbours, in order to promote industrial development. In the Sixties, aid to agriculture was added, and in the Seventies aid to social sectors (Basic Needs) was also provided. The Eighties brought worldwide debt problems. Major donors applied structural adjustment policies; some called this the lost decade (década perdida). The Nineties saw the arrival of the first environmental considerations, and asked for attention for the role of women and good governance. The form of aid changed from projects to programmes and budget support. Describing the different aid forms of the last 65 years and analysing why aid changed from time to time are the subjects of this book. Professionals and students in the area of international cooperation will benefit from studying this history, as, at this moment, old concepts are reappearing or applied by new donors like China. Is the pendulum really swinging back, as Louis Emmerij at one point suggested?
