Book excerpt: "Ty Seidule scorches us with the truth and rivets us with his fierce sense of moral urgency." --Ron Chernow In a forceful but humane narrative, former soldier and head of the West Point history department Ty Seidule's Robert E. Lee and Me challenges the myths and lies of the Confederate legacy—and explores why some of this country’s oldest wounds have never healed. Ty Seidule grew up revering Robert E. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the U.S. Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. From a soldier, a scholar, and a southerner, Ty Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning. In a unique blend of history and reflection, Seidule deconstructs the truth about the Confederacy—that its undisputed primary goal was the subjugation and enslavement of Black Americans—and directly challenges the idea of honoring those who labored to preserve that system and committed treason in their failed attempt to achieve it. Through the arc of Seidule’s own life, as well as the culture that formed him, he seeks a path to understanding why the facts of the Civil War have remained buried beneath layers of myth and even outright lies—and how they embody a cultural gulf that separates millions of Americans to this day. Part history lecture, part meditation on the Civil War and its fallout, and part memoir, Robert E. Lee and Me challenges the deeply-held legends and myths of the Confederacy—and provides a surprising interpretation of essential truths that our country still has a difficult time articulating and accepting.

Book excerpt: On April 2nd 1865, with the Confederate states in turmoil, a train carrying the separate monies of both the Confederate Treasury and the Virginia banks left Richmond. Following a hazardous flight south, the train was eventually split, allowing the bank money to return to Richmond. On May 24th, the wagon train carrying this money north was hijacked near Washington, Georgia. While some of the stolen money was recovered, much remains missing to this day. Rumors abound as to where the thieves hid their loot. Some claim it was dumped in that portion of the Savannah River, which is now part of Thurmond Lake. There have been many attempts to find it with no success although occasional claims of finding a gold bar or a few coins have been made. Others suggest the money is hidden in Crawfordville at the home of then Vice President Alexander Stephens but again no evidence has been found. Confederate Gold deftly blends fact and fiction into an historical mystery. The novel is woven around past realities and encompasses the many aspects of human strengths: loyalty, patience and fortitude offset by human frailties: greed, lust and deceit. Adventure and suspense are combined against a backdrop of real and fictional characters. In the end the novel suggests an answer to the whereabouts of that missing treasure. If it is not in the Savannah River or at the home of Vice President Alexander Stephens, it could well be where Singleton states it to be.

Book excerpt: For decades before the Civil War, Southern writers and warriors had been urging the occupation and development of the American Southwest. When the rift between North and South had been finalized in secession, the Confederacy moved to extend their traditions to the west-a long-sought goal that had been frustrated by northern states. It was a common sentiment among Southerners and especially Texans that Mexico must be rescued from indolent inhabitants and granted the benefits of American civilization. Blood and Treasure, written in a readable narrative style that belies the rigorous research behind it, tells the story of the Confederacy's ambitious plan to extend a Confederate empire across the continent. Led by Lieutenant Colonel John R. Baylor, later a governor of Arizona, and General H. H. Sibley, Texan soldiers trekked from San Antonio to Fort Bliss in El Paso, then north along the Rio Grande to Santa Fe. Fighting both Apaches and Federal troops, the half-trained, undisciplined army met success at the Battle of Val Verde and defeat at the Battle of Apache Canyon. Finally, the Texans won the Battle of Glorieta Pass, only to lose their supply train--and eventually the campaign. Pursued and dispirited, the Confederates abandoned their dream of empire and retreated to El Paso and San Antonio. Frazier has made use of previously untapped primary sources, allowing him to present new interpretations of the famous Civil War battles in the Southwest. Using narratives of veterans of the campaign and official Confederate and Union documents, the author explains how this seemingly far-fetched fantasy of building a Confederate empire was an essential part of the Confederate strategy. Military historians will be challenged to modify traditional views of Confederate imperial ambitions. Generalists will be drawn into the fascinating saga of the soldiers' fears, despair, and struggles to survive.

Book excerpt: From the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, bestselling historian, and author of Our First Civil War—the epic story of the California Gold Rush, “a fine, robust telling of one of the greatest adventure stories in history" (David McCullough, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of John Adams). The California Gold Rush inspired a new American dream—the “dream of instant wealth, won by audacity and good luck.” The discovery of gold on the American River in 1848 triggered the most astonishing mass movement of peoples since the Crusades. It drew fortune-seekers from the ends of the earth, accelerated America’s imperial expansion, and exacerbated the tensions that exploded in the Civil War. H.W. Brands tells his epic story from multiple perspectives: of adventurers John and Jessie Fremont, entrepreneur Leland Stanford, and the wry observer Samuel Clemens—side by side with prospectors, soldiers, and scoundrels. He imparts a visceral sense of the distances they traveled, the suffering they endured, and the fortunes they made and lost. Impressive in its scholarship and overflowing with life, The Age of Gold is history in the grand traditions of Stephen Ambrose and David McCullough.

Book Secrets of the Lost Confederate Gold

Download or read book Secrets of the Lost Confederate Gold written by Albert Atwell and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about two men that have searched a lifetime for the "Lost Confederate Gold." Each of us started our quest at an early age. I, myself; I started when I was five years old in 1959. At first, I was interested in just finding coins. After a rainstorm I would go out and search the ground where rainwater had run off the roof of our home thereby cutting a deep ditch into the grass. I was rewarded with a few pennies or even a nickel. My partner, Edward "Bubba" Powers started when he was only eight years old. While searching around an old home he found snuff cans containing silver dollars. We both took separate paths researching and searching for lost treasures. Along about 1996, J. Frank Carroll, a Danville, Virginia native wrote a book entitled, "Confederate Gold in Danville." I bought Mr. Carroll's book on New Year's Eve 1997. Edward Powers, or Bubba as he likes to be called, he and I brushed each other in meetings with J. Frank Carroll and while searching for the Confederate Gold. We were never introduced, and rumors were spread by J. Frank Carroll to keep us from meeting one another. Later, on March 3, 2008, J. Frank Carroll passed away. I searched on the Internet and was able to get Bubba's phone number. I called to let him know about J. Frank Carroll's passing away. We talked for over an hour and on this self-same day, even though 125 miles separated our homes, we became partners searching for the "Lost Confederate Gold." This story, is how we did that, what we learned, what we found, and what is left to be found... Book Why the Confederacy Lost

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, someone asked General Pickett why the Battle of Gettysburg had been lost: Was it Lee's error in taking the offensive, the tardiness of Ewell and Early, or Longstreet's hesitation in attacking? Pickett scratched his head and replied, "I've always thought the Yankees had something to do with it." This simple fact, writes James McPherson, has escaped a generation of historians who have looked to faulty morale, population, economics, and dissent as the causes of Confederate failure. These were all factors, he writes, but the Civil War was still a war--won by the Union army through key victories at key moments. With this brilliant review of how historians have explained the Southern defeat, McPherson opens a fascinating account by several leading historians of how the Union broke the Confederate rebellion. In every chapter, the military struggle takes center stage, as the authors reveal how battlefield decisions shaped the very forces that many scholars (putting the cart before the horse) claim determined the outcome of the war. Archer Jones examines the strategy of the two sides, showing how each had to match its military planning to political necessity. Lee raided north of the Potomac with one eye on European recognition and the other on Northern public opinion--but his inevitable retreats looked like failure to the Southern public. The North, however, developed a strategy of deep raids that was extremely effective because it served a valuable political as well as military purpose, shattering Southern morale by tearing up the interior. Gary Gallagher takes a hard look at the role of generals, narrowing his focus to the crucial triumvirate of Lee, Grant, and Sherman, who towered above the others. Lee's aggressiveness may have been costly, but he well knew the political impact of his spectacular victories; Grant and Sherman, meanwhile, were the first Union generals to fully harness Northern resources and carry out coordinated campaigns. Reid Mitchell shows how the Union's advantage in numbers was enhanced by a dedication and perseverance of federal troops that was not matched by the Confederates after their home front began to collapse. And Joseph Glatthaar examines black troops, whose role is entering the realm of national myth. In 1960, there appeared a collection of essays by major historians, entitled Why the North Won the Civil War, edited by David Donald; it is now in its twenty-sixth printing, having sold well over 100,000 copies. Why the Confederacy Lost provides a parallel volume, written by today's leading authorities. Provocatively argued and engagingly written, this work reminds us that the hard-won triumph of the North was far from inevitable.
