The 2-volume set showcases the resilience, creativity, and best practices from successful school librarians from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America. The librarians interviewed come from all different schools and schools systems, from a tiny recently built school library in a rural village in Africa to an ultra-modern library in Sweden. Featuring 37 interviews with successful school librarians from across the globe, the volumes let us hear the stories from countries around the world. They tell about their creative and innovative school library projects, their unconventional reading programs, and their best practices and experiences in addressing the challenges of supporting basic literacy. A wide selection of methodologies and approaches are discussed, offering a global “voyage” through topics important in school librarianship. The 2-volume set also addresses recent advancements in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the shift toward inquiry-based learning that impacts school libraries worldwide. The books are packed with information that can be used by school librarians, teachers, school administrators and others in a variety of ways. Readers can borrow best practices from the experiences presented in the book, and the volumes can also serve as a strong voice for practicing school librarians and the profession, through expanding the opportunities for professional sharing in the international school library community.

Book Professional Education for Librarianship

Download or read book Professional Education for Librarianship written by Olu Olat Lawal and published by Spectrum Books Limited. This book was released on 2003-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to much of the developed world, the professionalisation of education for librarianship is a recent phenomenon in Nigeria. This study presents, from international perspectives, a conceptual framework for curriculum development and reviews existing literature. It considers factors which have resulted in the professionalisation of education for libarianship and information services, present library problems, libraries' responses to wider social changes, and future needs. It discusses the imperative to provide both theoretically-based academic education, grounded in the principles and philosophy of the profession, as well as vocationally-orientated education, to produce sufficient levels of adequately trained staff, urgently required in African libraries. The author is University Librarian at the University of Calabar Library, Nigeria.

Book Renewing Professional Librarianship

Download or read book Renewing Professional Librarianship written by William A. Crowley and published by Libraries Unlimited. This book was released on 2008-03-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can professional librarianship exist, let alone thrive, in the 21st century? Does accreditation protect the profession, or reduce it to a minor component of information science? The prognosis is not good, claims cultural pragmatist Bill Crowley, with worse to follow unless library studies and information studies are viewed as separate cognate areas. While an information-centric definition may be appropriate for corporate information specialists, he notes that academic, public, and school librarians are already suffering the effects of devaluation. The remedy is to embrace a concept called lifecycle librarianship, the ability to meet crucial public needs from the lapsit to the nursing home, by honing the library's time honored role as a vital resource for reading and lifelong learning; and he concludes with a series of recommendations for library associations, library and information education educators, and practitioners and a challenge for the reader to do something with them!
