Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Professional Training of Secondary Teachers in the United States Within the last century the educational advancement, at least in the more progressive nations, has been so rapid, the scientific spirit so pronounced, and the differentiation and increased complexity of subject-matter so great, that it has become necessary to simplify the processes of education by more expert teaching. The science of education, depending as it does for much Of its material upon the scientific advancement in other fields of thought, has been slow in its development. But the growth of this subject in late years has been rapid and encouraging. Along with the advancement of the science of education has come a deeper interest in the science and art of teaching and in the professional training of teachers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers College Record, 1913, Vol. 14: A Journal Devoted to the Practical Problems of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Professional Training of Teachers The reorganization of a school system, large or small, by which the industrial and commercial aspects of life are given adequate provision is not a simple problem. This problem in volves many factors, all of which must be taken into account, or disappointment and even serious and costly errors will fol low. In the haste to establish schools and courses in the field of the various practical arts, it is to be regretted that many cities have begun the work at great expense without any ade quate knowledge of their actual needs and possibilities. No intelligent physician prescribes remedial agencies until he has made a diagnosis of his case. To prescribe for the educational needs of a community one must know those needs. So many elements enter into this complex problem Of educational needs that nothing less than a rather comprehensive survey of the entire social situation can provide the necessary information. Such a survey emphasizes the democratic character of the public school system. It reveals the needs of all groups in the social whole. Any system of education neglecting the fundamental needs of any group must be regarded as inadequate and un democratic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training School In spite of this friction however, several studies which have been made tend to show the value of teacher training. H. G. Childs in his study (if the value of practice teaching for teachers in secondary schools, had reports from nineteen city superintendents upon as many teachers who had done practice teaching as a part of their preparation. The summary of these reports, as given by Wilson is: Ten of the 19 teachers were decidedly above the average of all teachers in the teaching staff, 17 of the 19 were equal to or above the average of all, but two were below the average and none were reported unsatisfactory. The com parison with other teachers with no previous teaching experience is still more striking as 14 of the 19 were rated decidedly above the average. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Secondary Teachers My chief wish in presenting this report is that it may be of some slight service to the cause of training in secondary education here and in England. Whatever value it may have in this regard - and that may well be very small - it is the outcome of experiences which have to me been very interesting and pleasant. The pleasantness has been mainly due to the great kindness I have throughout received from all with whom this holiday task has brought me into relation - from officials at the India Office, from the Board of Education, from the heads of the institutions I have visited, and many others engaged in training. This gratitude is specially due to my old schoolfellow at Westminster, Dr. H. F. Heath, Director of Special Inquiries and Reports, whose good offices have been constant and unwearying; also to Mr. P. A. Barnett, His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Training Colleges. Mr. Barnett's suggestions, based on a unique experience of training, both theoretical and practical, proved of the greatest service. I have received kindness from so many others that it is impossible to acknowledge the debt individually; but my thanks are due in special to Professor Adams of London University and the London Day Training College, to Professor Findlay at Manchester, and to Mr. Keatinge, Reader in Education at Oxford, because the trial of their patience has been longer continued. I am only in this particular less indebted to Professor Welton at Leeds, to Dr. Fletcher at Cambridge, to Professor Archer at Bangor, to Professor Hughes at Birmingham, to Dr. Lloyd Morgan at Bristol, to Professor Green at Sheffield, to Professor Darroch at Edinburgh and to many others. I remember with special pleasure my visits to St. Mary's Hall, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool; to the Ladies College, Cheltenham; to Stonyhurst College; to the Borough Poad Training College, Isleworth; to Mr. David Salmon at Swansea. None Of these agencies go far back in our history; all of them, on the contrary, sprang directly or indirectly out of the educational revival that began to Show marked power in the most progresswe countries early in the present century. Book The Training of Teachers in England and Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Training of Teachers in England and Wales Classic Reprint written by Peter Sandiford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Teachers in England and Wales The purpose of this study is to give a systematic and critical account of the training of teachers in England and Wales. The systems in vogue in Scotland and Ireland differ fundamentally from the English system and consequently fall outside the scope of this work. The study is the outcome of researches made during the past two years in the Departments of Elementary Education and of Educational Administration at Teachers College. To these researches have been added the practical knowledge and experience gained as a lecturer in the Education Department of the University of Manchester - a day training college recognized under the regulations of the English Board of Education. A brief account of the administration of education in England and Wales has been given to serve as a background for the work. In addition, the history of the subject from Elizabethan times has been traced. Since the government is assuming responsibility for the training of secondary school teachers, art teachers, teachers of domestic arts and other subjects, a chapter dealing with these aspects of the problem has been introduced. The main portion of the work is, however, devoted to the description of the training and service of elementary school teachers. This Contribution is the third of a series on similar topics, the other two of which are Farrington, "The Public Primary School System of France, with special reference to the training of teachers"; and Kandel, "The Training of Elementary Teachers in Germany."
