The advent of satellite-borne y-ray telescopes has recently made y-ray astronomy a reality. The first observations, as discussed in this book, have already provided important information on galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays and interstellar gas. These observations may also have great cosmological significance. The second generation of y-ray telescopes is already in the development stage. It therefore seems most appropriate at this time for a comprehensive theoretical monograph."--Page iii.

It is shown that the production of mesons other than pions have little effect on the annihilation gamma-rays spectrum. It is also shown that gamma rays arising from annihilations at rest have energies between 5 and 865 MeV. The gamma-rays spectrum from annihilations at rest is calculated and compared with the calculations of Frye and Smith. A discussion is then presented of the various characteristics of proton-antiproton interactions in flight. Production of various mesons, hyperons, and isob isobars is discussed and cross sections are given. General implications of the data on the resultant gamma-ray spectra are stated.

Book excerpt: Calculated the galactic gamma-ray spectrum due to the decay of the nucleon isobars N*1/2 (1.410) and N*1/2 (1.688), for which the excitation involved no change of isotopic spin or strageness and due to the decay of hyperons (Lambda, Sigma+, Sigma0). Results show that these reactions may be an important source of gamma rays of energy greater than 6 TeV (6 X 10(12) eV).
