Book Dynamics of White Pine in New England

Download or read book Dynamics of White Pine in New England written by William B. Leak and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth, regeneration, and quality of white pine between the 1970's and 1980's were analyzed for the six-state New England region. Growth was comparable among all states except for Rhode Island where the growth (1.71%) was low in comparison with other states and with the growth of red maple (4.29%) within the state. For all states, the proportion of acreage in white pine seedling/sapling stands was too small (8%) to maintain the current volume and acreage of the species. However, stems in the 2- to 10-inch diameter class were adequately J-shaped over all states to sustain the species. Because many of these small stems must be in small openings or under partial canopies, efforts to regenerate and release white pine seem warranted. The percentage of volume in grades 1 and 2 more than doubled between the 1970's and 1980's in all states except Massachusetts and Connecticut where the percentage remained about constant.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Pine: Pinus Strobus Linnæus A multitude of industries is dependent upon a continued and large production of pine lumber, and its failure, though perhaps not threatening such a collapse of business interests as alarmists have pictured, will nevertheless involve serious if not disastrous consequences to the communities relying upon its continuance. The maintenance of an adequate future supply, especially in View of the well-known fact that the existing forests of White Pine can last but a few years longer, at most, is therefore a matter of great economical importance and can not receive too prompt attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Pines of the Southern United States: Together With a Discussion of the Structure of Their Wood In ignorance of the nature and without appreciation of the economic value of their resources, pioneers squander and destroy without regard to the future the riches they find. We have done so in the United States and are continuing to do so although the pioneering stage should have been passed, especially with our forest resources. We have exploited them as if they were mines, instead of crops which can be harvested and reproduced continuously, and we have done so in a most wasteful manner; nay, we have by irrational methods of exploitation, no doubt due in part to the necessities of a rapidly developing country, in many cases destroyed the conditions for natural reproduction of the more valuable timber species. Fire and indiscriminate pasturing have also assisted in the process of deterioration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Blister Rust of White Pine Classic Reprint written by Perley Spaulding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blister Rust of White Pine Naturally the increase in the demand for suitable small coniferous trees has led to the establishment of a number of forest-tree nurseries which supply this commercial demand. Of course there have been for years nurseries which supplied relatively small quantities of this stock; these met the demand-for stock for ornamental purposes but not for practical field planting. During the past year or two Ameri can nurserymen have been unable wholly to supply the suddenly increased demand for planting stock, the entire available supply being sold in spite of the action of the Northeastern States in furnish ing planting stock at cost prices. American prices have been and still are considerably higher than European prices for the same grade of stock. This is partly due to the higher cost of manual labor in this country and partly to the inefficient methods and supervision given to this crop by many American nurserymen. There are many Americans who are fully competent to raise young fruit-tree stock and who are very success ful in this branch of nursery work. But this class of stock is not usually seriously affected with the damping - off diseases, while the coniferous seedlings are as a class especially susceptible to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arbor Day: Rhode Island, May Ninth, Nineteen Hundred and Two Another spring brings us again to our Arbor Day festival. This is peculiarly the children's day because it is so thoroughly linked with life, vigor, and growth. Then, too, by the law of association, all of Nature, - the flowers and shrubs, birds and animals, - all things which speak of living beauty and activity are connected with the topic and the day. Obediently to that thought we have devoted now one year and now another to the flowers, the shrubs, the birds, as well as to the general topic. Ten years have passed since the first programme was prepared. It seems to be a fitting time for the original subject of tree planting to engage our attention. Many, if not most, of those pupils who took part in the exercises of 1892 have left school. Hence there are undoubtedly some who know but little about Arbor Day. It has, therefore, been deemed best to place the emphasis of this day upon the tree, its uses, its part in the economy of our lives, and the place it has secured in our literature. Your attention is called particularly to our own trees, - that is, those which we may call natives. The pamphlet from which this list is taken was compiled by one of the best known teachers of our State, Mr. L.W. Russell, of the Bridgham School, Providence, and will well repay careful study. Upon the title page of this programme will be found a picture of a tree rarely excelled for its beauty. It is a view of a tulip tree to be found growing on a farm in the vicinity of Providence. Others of much the same beauty may be found in different parts of the State. Although as members of the public schools we are bound to be loyal to the tree of our choice in 1894, - the maple, - we must admit the remarkable qualities of the tulip. As a shade tree it is very beautiful and ornamental, it is easy of transplanting, and grows rapidly and luxuriantly, so that it soon comes to a good size and affords shade and comfort. When necessary to cut it, the wood is fitted to many uses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."
