Book The Service Sector Productivity and Growth

Download or read book The Service Sector Productivity and Growth written by Ernesto Felli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economics of the service sector has recently attracted a large attention. At a macroeconomic level, the discussion has been focused on the issues concerning the relationship between the expansion of the service industry and the potential for a stable and sustained growth. Slow productivity growth, due to the largely non tradable nature of the output, lack of competition due either to regulations or to barriers to entry are among the "bads" sometimes associated with a "service led" growth. On the other hand new working places are created in the service industries at a rate much higher than in the industrial ones. Is a lower rate of technological change and the continuing of inflationary tensions the price to pay for a sustained expansion of employment in the service sector? These are in a nutshell the questions that led CElS (Centre for International Studies on Economic Growth - University of Rome "Tor Vergata") to organize the International Seminar on "The Service Sector: Productivity and Growth" held in Rome in May 1993, whose revised proceedings are published in this volume. The economists and academicians invited to the conference have faced the issues mentioned above from different perspectives, but they concentrated especially on the problems relative to growth and productivity.

Book excerpt: A major bestseller in Italy, Paul Ginsborg's account of this most recent and dynamic period in Italy's history is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand contemoprary Italy. Ginsborg chronicles a period that witnessed a radical transformation in the country's social, economic and political landscape, creating a fascinating and definitve account of how Italy has coped or failed to cope as it moves from one century to the next. With particular emphasis on its role in italian life, work and culture Ginsborg shows how smaller families, longer lives and greater generation crossover have had significant effects on Italian society. Ginsborg looks at the 2000 elections, the influence of the Mafia, the decline of both Communism and Catholicism, and the change in national identity. This is modern history at its best.

Book The Changing Geography of Advanced Producer Services

Download or read book The Changing Geography of Advanced Producer Services written by Peter W. Daniels and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1993-11-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The service sector is the fastest growing but least studied area of modern economic geography, so many economic geographers are now turning their attention to how the so-called ‘tertiary economy’ operates to produce distinctive patterns of location and regional development. Producer services are those provided to enterprises rather than to individual consumers, and this book is the first to be devoted specifically to assessing their role as spatial phenomena and agents of economic and geographical change. Daniels and Moulaert approach the topic at two levels; firstly theoretical, where conventional neoclassical models of production and exchange seem to have little value in explaining service production and therefore new theoretical perspectives need to be developed and, secondly, empirical, which presents regional development histories of producer services such as accountancy, consultancy or finance, to illustrate the complexity of the geographical dimensions of the modern service economy. This is a landmark book for students and researchers in geography, economics, planning and public policy. Contents Advanced producer services: beyond the micro-economics of production — F. Book From Combines to Computers

Download or read book From Combines to Computers written by Amy Glasmeier and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an analysis of national data and detailed case studies, From Combines to Computers examines how the transition to a service economy is playing out for rural America. It answers two important questions: Will services fill the gap left by lost farming, manufacturing, and mining jobs? And will services stabilize, even revitalize, rural areas? Glasmeier and Howland document the intraregional spatial patterns and trends of services in the national economy, compare services in urban and rural communities, and identify the potential and limitations of rural development strategies based on services. In particular, they document the growing dominance of branch plants, the displacement of "mom-and-pop" enterprises, and the declining access to services for residents in the least populated rural areas. The authors conclude that services are unlikely to be the basis of widespread sustainable development unless policies are designed to help firms and communities compete successfully in an increasingly global and information-based economy

Book Service Industries in Regional Development

Download or read book Service Industries in Regional Development written by William J. Coffey and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1989 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents a broad empirical picture of the national, regional, and urban structure of the Canadian economy. It identifies the factors which may be causing the relative shift towards employment in service industries and occupations, and shows that the lack of actual data on interregional flows of service outputs effectively precludes the empirical testing of regional general equilibrium models involving service industries. It concludes by bringing forth the regional policy implications embedded in the conceptual and empirical work on service industries.
