Book Idol Temples and Crafty Priests

Download or read book Idol Temples and Crafty Priests written by S.J. Barnett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barnett traces the Christian critique of the Church and its history in Protestant (English) and Catholic (Italian) thought from the Reformation to the Enlightenment. More than one hundred and fifty years of bitter polemic between the two great confessions and their religious dissidents produced an unprecedented, comparative historical and sociological anticlericalism. In the last decades of the seventeenth century, English dissenting thought was pregnant with a devastating critique of the church, which came to be termed the 'Deist' view of Church history: by 1700 the cornerstone of high 'Enlightenment anticlerical thought' was in ascent.

Book The Enlightenment and religion

Download or read book The Enlightenment and religion written by S. J. Barnett and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book offers a critical survey of religious change and its causes in eighteenth-century Europe, and constitutes a challenge to the accepted views in traditional Enlightenment studies. Focusing on Enlightenment Italy, France and England, it illustrates how the canonical view of eighteenth-century religious change has in reality been constructed upon scant evidence and assumption, in particular the idea that the thought of the enlightened led to modernity. For, despite a lack of evidence, one of the fundamental assumptions of Enlightenment studies has been the assertion that there was a vibrant Deist movement which formed the “intellectual solvent” of the eighteenth century. The central claim of this book is that the immense ideological appeal of the traditional birth-of-modernity myth has meant that the actual lack of Deists has been glossed over, and a quite misleading historical view has become entrenched.

Book A Short and Easy Method With the Deists

Download or read book A Short and Easy Method With the Deists written by Charles Leslie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short and Easy Method With the Deists: Wherein the Certainty of the Christian Religion Is Demonstrated by Infallible Proof; In a Letter to a Friend, to Which Are Added, a Letter From the Author to a Deist, Upon His Conversion by Reading His Book; And the Truth of Christianity Demonstrated Now, Sir, that which you desire from me is some short topic of reason, if such can be found, whereby without running to authorities, and the intricate mazes of learning, which breed long disputes, and which these men of reason deny by wholesale, though they can give no reason for it, only suppose that authors have been trumped upon us, interpolated and corrupted, so that no stress can be laid upon them, though it cannot be shown wherein they are so cor rupted; which, in reason, ought to lie upon them to prove who allege it; otherwise it is not only a pre carious, but a guilty plea: and the more, that they refrain not to quote books on their side, for whose authority there are no better, or not so good grounds. However, you say, it makes your disputes endless, and they go away with noise and clamour, and a boast that there is nothing, at least nothing certain, to be said on the Christian side. Therefore you are desirous to find some one topic of reason, which should demonstrate the truth of the Christian religion, and, at the same time, distinguish it from the impostures of Mahomet, and the whole Pagan world: that our Deists may be brought to this test, and be obliged either to renounce their reason, and the common reason of mankind, or to submit to the clear proof, from reason, of the Christian religion; which must be such a proof as no imposture can pretend to, otherwise it cannot prove the Christian religion not to be an imposture. And, whether such a proof, one single proof, (to avoid confusion, ) is not to be found out, you desire to know from me. And you say, that you cannot imagine but there must be such a proof, because every truth is in itself clear, and one and, therefore, that one reason for it, if it be the true reason, must be sufficient; and if sufficient, it is better than many: but multiplicity confounds especially to weak judgments. Sir, you have imposed a hard task upon me: I wish I could perform it. For though every truth is one, yet our sight is so feeble that we cannot (always) come to it directly, but by many inferences, and laying of things together. Download or read book A Letter to the Deists by the Author of God s Universal Goodness Displayed written by AUTHOR OF 'GOD'S UNIVERSAL GOODNESS DISP. and published by Gale Ecco, Print Editions. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
