Book The Process of Women s Empowerment

Download or read book The Process of Women s Empowerment written by Sara Longwe and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a 'cautionary tale' about a development wide area in rural Zambia, with the purpose of lessening the burden of labour on women who previously had to fetch water from faraway streams. The result of the programme was exactly the opposite - it had the actual effect of increasing women's burden of labour. In this book, Longwe and Clarke seek to explain how a more considered approach can avoid such farcical disaster. Central to women's advancement is their own collective participation in the process of recognising and overcoming the instances of systemic gender discrimination which stand in their way. The Longwe Empowerment Framework, which provides the central core of this book, sets out five essential elements of collective action by which women can obtain more control over their own labour and their own lives, in a continuous process of increasing collective empowerment. This empowerment process, being self-generative, is seen as being equally as important as the resulting material benefits. Hope Chigudu, a noted feminist and gender consultant, concludes her preface to this book by writing that... " in a nutshell ... it offers an analytical framework for identifying the potentially progressive and regressive factors to anticipate at each stage of a women's empowerment programme, and how to dance with the power dynamics that are inevitable in a patriarchal world."

Book Women Empowerment Challenges and Strategies

Download or read book Women Empowerment Challenges and Strategies written by and published by Booksclinic Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The proposed edited book on Women Empowerment: Challenges and Strategies, deals with the problems associated with the women community suffering from marginalization and the ways to address their identity and human rights concerns. The status of women in every nation was deprived and never considered. They were considered as mere machines to fulfill mere different duties. During ancient ages, we can see the evolution of changing and taking new perspectives. The concept of female in Manusmriti and in Puranas of considering them as dependents and deities is contradictory. There are still places where women are still considered as deprived and are still under chains it is the duty of the privileged to empower the underprivileged.Women empowerment programs failed as they overlooked the structural factors that perpetuated oppression and exploitation. The fulfillment of practical needs such as food, health care, and education cannot empower women unless the long-term strategic needs are met. The process of empowerment requires a transformation of structures of sub ordinance, control over material and intellectual resources, gaining decisions, making authority and reduction of gender inequality. The present book is the collection of Twenty-two research papers enlightens and thought-provoking articles contributed by research scholars throwing light on the women empowerment and role of religion and policies, women and nutrition, gender sensitization, role of education, status of working women in unorganized sector, role of media and NGO in promoting women empowerment, empowerment of Indian women –a challenge of 21st century, life skills and older women with reference to old age homes, depiction of women in literature and Marginalization of Women Characters in literature, social organization and woman empowerment and entrepreneurshipThe book will be an important reference source for scholars in the fields of rights of the marginalized sections, rights of the women, the role of education & practice and gender studies. The purpose of this edited book is to provide a common platform for academicians and policymakers for a comprehensive deliberation on issues relating to social sector development in our society. The research papers and various articles covering so many themes of social awareness for education and social sector development are compiled in one place so that anyone can get easy access to their research. This book is edited basically for the students, teachers, researchers, and academics. Book Women s Empowerment and Demographic Processes

Download or read book Women s Empowerment and Demographic Processes written by Harriet B. Presser and published by International Studies in Demog. This book was released on 2000 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is general consensus among the international population community that the commitment achieved at the International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 1994) to womens empowerment, along with the related goals of improving womens reproductive health and securing theirreproductive rights, represented a paradigm shift in the discourse about population and development, even though there are differences in view whether this is a positive change or not. But while the rhetoric about womens empowerment is pervasive, the concept remains ill-defined, and its relationshipto demographic processes has not been well articulated, either theoretically or empirically. This book brings together leading researchers and policy advocates to explore whether the concept of womens empowerment is indeed useful for an understanding of key demographic processes. Its contributorsidentify new directions for demographic research from the analysis of available data that measure womens empowerment, and point to the implications for population-related policies.Demographic research has focused relatively little to date on gender, let alone the question of power. Yet critiques of available data argue that traditional womens-status indicators, such as education and employment, are often not sensitive enough to capture the nuances of gender power relationsand the ways in which they govern womens and mens reproductive behaviour. This book moves forward to the complex task of conceptualizing, measuring, and analysing womens empowerment. In laying this groundwork, it provides critically important insights into the causes and consequences of populationchange, including migration. The book combines conceptual and empirical research with policy directions and considers the relevance of economic, social, and cultural contexts for the health and well-being of women, adolescents, and children. The countries under study are of both the North and theSouth. This book represents state-of-the-art knowledge on the two-way linkages between womens empowerment and demographic processes.

Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 2012 report recognized that expanding women's agency - their ability to make decisions and take advantage of opportunities is key to improving their lives as well as the world. This report represents a major advance in global knowledge on this critical front. The vast data and thousands of surveys distilled in this report cast important light on the nature of constraints women and girls continue to face globally. This report identifies promising opportunities and entry points for lasting transformation, such as interventions that reach across sectors and include life-skills training, sexual and reproductive health education, conditional cash transfers, and mentoring. It finds that addressing what the World Health Organization has identified as an epidemic of violence against women means sharply scaling up engagement with men and boys. The report also underlines the vital role information and communication technologies can play in amplifying women's voices, expanding their economic and learning opportunities, and broadening their views and aspirations. The World Bank Group's twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity demand no less than the full and equal participation of women and men, girls and boys, around the world." -- Publisher's description.

Book Women s Empowerment and Global Health

Download or read book Women s Empowerment and Global Health written by Shari Dworkin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is women's empowerment, and how and why does it matter for women's health? Despite the rise of a human rights-based approach to women's health and increasing awareness of the synergies between women's health and empowerment, a lack of consensus remains as to how to measure empowerment and successfully intervene in ways that improve health. Women's Empowerment and Global Health provides thirteen detailed, multidisciplinary case studies from across the globe and through the course of a woman's life to show how science and advocacy can be creatively merged to enhance the agency and status of women. Accompanying short videos provide background about programs on the ground in India, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Women's Empowerment and Global Health explores the promises and limits of programmatic, scientific, and rights-based work in real-world settings and provides the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as students in global and public health, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, law, business, and medicine, with cutting edge and inspirational examples of programs that point the way toward achieving women's equality and fulfilling the right to health."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide a comprehensive reference work on scientific and other scholarly research on the quality of life, including health-related quality of life research or also called patient-reported outcomes research. Since the 1960s two overlapping but fairly distinct research communities and traditions have developed concerning ideas about the quality of life, individually and collectively, one with a fairly narrow focus on health-related issues and one with a quite broad focus. In many ways, the central issues of these fields have roots extending to the observations and speculations of ancient philosophers, creating a continuous exploration by diverse explorers in diverse historic and cultural circumstances over several centuries of the qualities of human existence. What we have not had so far is a single, multidimensional reference work connecting the most salient and important contributions to the relevant fields. Entries are organized alphabetically and cover basic concepts, relatively well established facts, lawlike and causal relations, theories, methods, standardized tests, biographic entries on significant figures, organizational profiles, indicators and indexes of qualities of individuals and of communities of diverse sizes, including rural areas, towns, cities, counties, provinces, states, regions, countries and groups of countries.

Book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Girls Education in the Twenty first Century written by Mercy Tembon and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persuasive evidence demonstrates that gender equality in education is central to economic development. Despite more than two decades of accumulated knowledge and evidence of what works in improving gender equality, progress on the ground remains slow and uneven across countries. What is missing? Given that education is a critical path to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women, what is holding us back? These questions were discussed at the global symposium Education: A Critical Path to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, which was sponsored by the World Bank in October 2007. Girls' Education in the 21st Century is based on background papers developed for the symposium. The book's chapters reflect the current state of knowledge on education from a gender perspective and highlight the importance of, and challenges to, female education, as well as the interdependence of education and development objectives. The last chapter presents five strategic directions for advancing gender equality in education and their implications for World Bank operations. Girls' Education in the 21st Century will be of particular interest to researchers, educators, school administrators, and policy makers at the global, national, regional, and municipal levels.

Book Rethinking Empowerment

Download or read book Rethinking Empowerment written by Jane L. Parpart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Empowerment looks at the changing role of women in developing countries and calls for a new approach to empowerment. An approach that adopts a more nuanced, feminist interpretation of power and em(power)ment, recognises that local empowerment is always embedded in regional, national and global contexts, pays attention to institutional structures and politics and acknowledges that empowerment is both a process and an outcome. Moreover, the book warns that an obsession with measurement rather than process can undermine efforts to foster transformative and empowering outcomes. It concludes that power must be restored as the centrepiece of empowerment. Only then will the term and its advocates provide meaningful ammunition for dealing with the challenges of an increasingly unequal, and often sexist, global/local world.

Book excerpt: The authors in this volume address the questions 'What is empowerment?' Is it power over resources? Is it the ability to create 'effective demand'? Is it about the ability to make choices? Is it about access to resources and how they are controlled, politically, economically, by NGOs, by political parties, by the state? Do political parties facilitate or do they channel energies away from empowerment? They evaluate how in different circumstances different political agents have been seen as provider of resources.

Book Adaptive Preferences and Women s Empowerment

Download or read book Adaptive Preferences and Women s Empowerment written by Serene J. Khader and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serene Khader's book on adaptive preference is a book that should be read by anyone interested in oppression and how to struggle against and overcome it. According to many feminist theories of oppression, a primary problem for overcoming oppression is that the victims become accustomed to their circumstances and even come to prefer them. Their preference for their oppressive conditions then form practical and moral obstacles to changing them, since the oppressed act in ways to further those conditions and it seems cruel or unfair to take from the oppressed what they claim to prefer. Such preferences are called adaptive preferences, and transforming them seems to be an important goal of institutions that aim to improve the lives of the oppressed. This book is about how and why public institutions should intervene in the lives and societies of oppressed persons with adaptive preferences to encourage their flourishing. Although Khader explicitly targets impoverished and oppressed women in the global South, her arguments should apply equally to other contexts of oppression and deprivation.
