Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problems of Evolution It is unnecessary in a study of this kind, which is avowedly an attempt to approach the problems of species formation and general organic evolution in the broadest possible way, to delve into the past history of the subject in detail. Anyone who is interested in it will undoubtedly be thoroughly acquainted with that history so that a general survey may be dispensed with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Evolution I assume that the principles which have brought about the evolution of plants and of animals other than man must account, no less, for human evolution. But no sooner is the human stage entered upon than morality, religion, and the accumulation of knowledge begin to play, each of them, an important part, which becomes more impor tant as evolution proceeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book Problems of Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems of Genetics Classic Reprint written by William Bateson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Genetics This book gives the substance of a series of lectures delivered in Yale University, where I had the privilege of holding the office of Silliman Lecturer in 1907. The delay in publication was brought about by a variety of causes. Inasmuch as the purpose of the lectures is to discuss some of the wider problems of biology in the light of knowledge acquired by Mendelian methods of analysis, it was essential that a fairly full account of the conclusions established by them should first be undertaken and I therefore postponed the present work till a book on Mendel's Principles had been completed. On attempting a more general discussion Of the bearing Of the phenomena on the theory of Evolution, I found myself continually hindered by the consciousness that such treatment is premature, and by doubt whether it were not better that the debate should for the present stand indefinitely adjourned. That species have come into existence by an evolutionary process no one seriously doubts; but few who are familiar with the facts that genetic research has revealed are now inclined to speculate as to the manner by which the process has been ac complished. Our knowledge of the nature and properties Of living things is far too meagre to justify any such attempts. Suggestions of course can be made: though, however, these ideas may have a stimulating value in the lecture room, they look weak and thin when set out in print. The work which may one day give them a body has yet to be done. The development of negations is always an ungrateful task apt to be postponed for the positive business of experiment. Such work is happily now going forward in most of the centers of scientific life. Of many of the subjects here treated we already know more than we did in 1907. The delay in production has made it possible to incorporate these new contributions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To Mr. Julian Huxley, who read the chapters which deal most directly with biological problems, I am also indebted for valuable help. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life: Its Origin, History and Future The University of Chicago in December, 1955, began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bringing to bear on the subject of evolution current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958 they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions of the issues in evolution; these were held for the public during a five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The discus sions were based on the papers that had been prepared and distributed in advance, but were not delivered at the Celebration. The present volume, The Evolution of Life, and its companion volume, The Evolution of Man, represent most of the collected Uni versity of Chicago Centennial papers. A small group on the relation ship between science and spiritual values appears in a third volume, Issues in Evolution, which also contains the panel discussions and an index to all three volumes. Collectively, this work 15 called Evolution after Darwin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. That species are subject to change is a fact as general and as fundamental in the organic world as gravitation is in the inorganic, and no less important in its relations to human progress. Our knowledge of evolution is far from complete, but it affords our only insight into many important problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revised Darwinism: Or Father Wasmann on Evolution Cause turns as to the body.endowed with the proper jurisdiction and the requisite attain ments to decide the difficulties which arise in the discussion of his problems. The arrange ment in the case of Father Wasmann's lectures made the whole affair a quite unique proceed ing. Indeed, its singularity makes it quite a remarkable episode in these latter days of the history of evolution. Three different nights were assigned to Father Wasmann for the de livery of his three lectures. A night was then set apart for the discussion of the problems in evolution raised by these lectures. At this discussion eleven savants in all spoke, ten of whom were Opposed to Father Wasmann's views, the eleventh being non-committal. Final ly, Father Wasmann closed the discussion, speaking by way of rejoinder to the replies of his opponents and his remarks - which lasted half an hour - closed the debate, the learned and distinguished assemblage breaking up a little after midnight. Surely Berlin has taken the problem of evolution seriously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If it is more than a sweet, flattering dream, how can it be realised? Will the man in power, duly expropriated for the common good, resign himself to mediocrity? Will not the deeply rooted prejudices of a dethroned aristocracy and the utilitarian instinct of the slave-driver arm his enraged hand? And if these dangerous longings for ill-regulated ease have to be forcibly repressed, will not the society of the future be threatened with new wars of class with class, with the consequent ruinous waste of men and weapons. Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited view of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. Book Evolution and Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution and Genetics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hunt Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Genetics HE third reprinting Of the Vanuxem Lectures for 1915-16, entitled A Critique of the Theory of Evolution, having been exhausted, the publishers have asked for a revised edition. The revision is no less an attempt at a critique Of the evolution theory than its predecessor, but, as the change in title sug gests, greater attention is here paid to one Of the most debated questions among evolutionists today, namely, the bearing Of the recent discoveries in genetics and in mutation on the theory Of evolution. While in a general way Darwin's theory Of Natu ral Selection is independent Of the origin Of the new variations that furnish it with its materials, yet the scientific formulation Of the theory is intimately con nected with the origin and inheritance Of suitable vari ations. For instance, if most of the observed variabil ity Of animals and plants were due directly to the environment, and if the effects thus brought about were not inherited, such variability could no longer be appealed to as material for natural selection. Again, if the variations that appear as mutants are always defective types, they could not, even though they are inherited, be appealed to as furnishing ma terial for progressive evolution. Book A Synthesis of Evolutionary Theory Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Synthesis of Evolutionary Theory Classic Reprint written by Herbert H. Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synthesis of Evolutionary Theory By combining new ideas from different disciplines, evolutionary studies bring out new perspectives which in turn continuously gen erate new questions. Efforts to answer evolutionary questions lead to new ways of framing inquiries in affected disciplines. The analysis of whole communities, for example, has been considered by several writers (andrewartha and Birch, 1954) as too complex a problem to be fathomed through the use of present ecological research methods. Because existing biotic communities are the products of past evolution, a knowledge of the principles of their evolutionary history will undoubtedly lead to new conceptual foundations valu able in community analysis. As the physicist, astronomer, and his torian Rudolf Thiel has said, Only knowledge of how a thing be came what it is gives us a feeling of really understanding it. We are not satisfied with insight into the character of things; we must fathom their origins before we feel that we have begun to reach the ultimate truth about them. The examples have been chosen carefully with two thoughts in mind. First has been the desire to choose those which would help to explain ideas with the greatest clarity. Second has been the hope that these examples would assist the reader in understanding how data from his investigations might fit into and augment evolutionary concepts.
