Book Sherlock Holmes The Problem of Thor Bridge and The Cabman s Story The Mysteries of a London Growler

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes The Problem of Thor Bridge and The Cabman s Story The Mysteries of a London Growler written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere in the vaults of the bank of Cox and Co., at Charing Cross, there is a travel-worn and battered tin dispatchbox with my name, John H. Watson, M. D., Late Indian Army, painted upon the lid. It is crammed with papers, nearly all of which are records of cases to illustrate the curious problems which Mr. Sherlock Holmes had at various times to examine. Some, and not the least interesting, were complete failures, and as such will hardly bear narrating, since no final explanation is forthcoming. A problem without a solution may interest the student, but can hardly fail to annoy the casual reader. Among these unfinished tales is that of Mr. James Phillimore, who, stepping back into his own house to get his umbrella, was never more seen in this world. No less remarkable is that of the cutter Alicia, which sailed one spring morning into a small patch of mist from where she never again emerged, nor was anything further ever heard of herself and her crew. A third case worthy of note is that of Isadora Persano, the well-known journalist and duellist, who was found stark staring mad with a match box in front of him which contained a remarkable worm said to be unknown to science. Apart from these unfathomed cases, there are some which involve the secrets of private families to an extent which would mean consternation in many exalted quarters if it were thought possible that they might find their way into print. I need not say that such a breach of confidence is unthinkable, and that these records will be separated and destroyed now that my friend has time to turn his energies to the matter. There remain a considerable residue of cases of greater or less interest which I might have edited before had I not feared to give the public a surfeit which might react upon the reputation of the man whom above all others I revere. In some I was myself concerned and can speak as an eye-witness, while in others I was either not present or played so small a part that they could only be told as by a third person. The following narrative is drawn from my own experience. It was a wild morning in October, and I observed as I was dressing how the last remaining leaves were being whirled from the solitary plane tree which graces the yard behind our house. I descended to breakfast prepared to find my companion in depressed spirits, for, like all great artists, he was easily impressed by his surroundings. On the contrary, I found that he had nearly finished his meal, and that his mood was particularly bright and joyous, with that somewhat sinister cheerfulness which was characteristic of his lighter moments.

This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sixty original tales of Sherlock Holmes -- which one is the best? In sixty essays, sixty Sherlockians make the case for each of the stories. Their arguments range from the playful to the academic, and are as varied as the authors themselves. As editor Christopher Redmond says, ""What they have written is compelling evidence that any one of the Sherlock Holmes stories can be the best; it’s all a matter of what the reader is looking for."" Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tales range from Victorian horror, to jewel heists, to society scandals. As these authors show, there's a Sherlock Holmes adventure for every taste. This volume benefits the Beacon Society. No royalties from the sale of this volume will be paid to either the authors or the editor. Royalties earned will, with the cooperation of the publisher, be turned over in their entirety to the Beacon Society, a not-for-profit organization of Sherlockians with the purpose of introducing young people to Sherlock Holmes through classrooms and libraries."

Download or read book Sherlock Holmes in Song written by Jim Ballinger and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever arrived at a Sherlockian meeting having not read the story of the day? What you need is a 3-minute synopsis. In verse. With music. That very solution is in your hands. Jim Ballinger began writing folk songs about each of the Sherlock Holmes stories in 1981 and performing them at meetings of the Bootmakers of Toronto with accompaniment on his guitar. After a hiatus or two, the project was completed with the sixtieth song in 2017. The lyrics and notation of the original music are included in this volume, edited by Mark Alberstat. The music encompasses a variety of styles from generic trad rock or folk rock to Victorian music hall, Gilbert and Sullivan patter songs, sea shanty (Black Peter), rhumba (The Dancing Men, The Sussex Vampire), bouzouki (The Greek Interpreter), country and western (The Three Garridebs), military band (The Naval Treaty), rugby song (The Missing Three-Quarter), and drinking song (The Six Napoleons). There's even some tasteful yodeling at the Reichenbach Falls in The Final Problem, and The Creeping Man strays dangerously close to punk rock. Other influences include Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Tom Lehrer and Gordon Lightfoot. Videos of the songs are posted on the YouTube channel Sherlock Songs.

Book excerpt: In his Sherlock Holmes adventures, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has probably done more than any other writer, to form our image of London. In our mind's eye, we still see the sinister, fog-bound city that was the center of the Empire. Although not entirely true, readers have come to think of the Sherlock Holmes' adventures as London stories. Today, time, the Blitz, and urban redevelopment have taken their toll, but much of what Sherlock "saw" is still there. Conan Doyle was unusually precise in his London addresses and locations, only occasionally disguising a site. To help find Sherlock's London, Thomas B. Wheeler, a London expert and owner of London Secrets, has identified an "astonishing" 200 sites, and cross-referenced them by adventure, and by the closest modern underground station. "Finding Sherlock's London" is a London guidebook for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts. To get the most out of it, reread your favorite Sherlock Holmes adventures before leaving home, and buy a pocket magnifying glass. After you arrive in London, purchase a modern street guide (for which you will need the magnifying glass), and a TravelCard for unlimited travel on London's Underground. Then, enjoy--the game is afoot!

Book A Reader s Companion to Sherlock Holmes

Download or read book A Reader s Companion to Sherlock Holmes written by Father J. Michael Venditti and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Reader’s Companion to Sherlock Holmes by Father J. Michael Venditti Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in his memoirs, “It is a great mistake to start putting out cargo when you have hardly stowed any on board,” explaining why he didn’t become an author until relatively late in life. Father J. Michael Venditti has Sherlock Holmes cargo in abundance and his A Reader’s Companion to Sherlock Holmes offers fans a friendly and intriguing perspective into the classic stories. Venditti hopes to encourage new readers to crack open the tales of the Sleuth of Baker Street, while offering fresh insight for those already familiar with the cases. This is not a book of literary criticism of the Holmes tales – instead Venditti dispels myths and misconceptions about the works, as well as offers insight into the man who created them. Part biography and part history, Venditti’s book frames the Holmes canon as only an avid fan can do. This Companion will send the reader straight to the pages of the Holmes tales with historical context to bring them to vivid life.
