Book The Problem of the Fourth Gospel Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Fourth Gospel If I venture the following personal explanation, the reason is simply and solely this: I have been advised clearly to define the relations between the present volume and a little work of mine which, published about a dozen years ago, was entitled The Fourth Gospel and some recent German Criticism. Let me accordingly inform the reader that, when asked for a second edition of a work which - so, at all events, people were good enough to tell me - had served a useful purpose, I was for some time loth to acquiesce in such altogether unexpected but certainly encouraging suggestions. It was, indeed, far from being the case that, because the fates had determined that I should stray into Synoptic fields and the region of Eschatological research, I had therefore ceased to be fascinated by the Johannine literature en masse, and in particular by the very noble treatise which bears the name of 'John'; on the contrary, I had actually betaken myself to what bade fair to be a prolonged and laborious attempt to trace connecting links between the 'Schmerzenskind der Theologie' (as Pfleiderer calls the Fourth Gospel) and that great writing of - may I say it? - uncertain provenance which is designated 'The Epistle to the Ephesians.' My hesitation was, of course, partly due to natural reluctance even temporarily to forsake a work which was already rising on the stocks; it was, however, mainly grounded in a difficulty which stared me in the face. To put the matter in a nut-shell: I was speedily compelled to realize that, were any action taken in response to the aforesaid kindly suggestions, it would mean that time must be found for the drastic re-writing of a work which I could but turn to with added dissatisfaction and no small measure of dissent. Mere revision was not to be thought of. Somehow or other time has been found - or rather made; and in the event the present volume arrives at its completion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel: The Question of Its Origin Stated and Discussed Mr. Tayler, belongs to the primitive age of Christianity, and cannot be brought lower than the first half of the second century. Never theless, he does not consider it as the work of imposture: partly because it does not speak of John as its author till the last chapter, which he holds to be a later addition; and, also, because the book is really filled with the current of spir itual life which came from Jesus. His work ends with an attempt to show that Baron Bunsen was wrong in saying that, if John's Gospel is not authentic, there can be no historical Christ and no Christian Church. On the other hand, Mr. Tayler asserts that Christianity is not damaged by the results Of this criticism, and that we lose nothing in discovering that the Fourth Gospel was not the work of an apostle, but of an um known writer at Ephesus, in the second century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel Its Purpose and Theology In the following study of the theology of the Fourth Gospel I have ventured to assume, without preliminary statement, the results of the critical investigation. An adequate discussion of the Johannine problem would have almost doubled the size of the volume, and could have been little more than a reiteration of facts and arguments already familiar to all students of the recent literature. It has been apparent, for some time past, that all the available material for forming a judgment on the date and authorship of the Gospel has now been collected and thoroughly sifted. Different writers arrive at different conclusions, but are unable to make any real addition to the evidence. The position assumed in this book is that which is now generally accepted by Continental scholars. A more conservative opinion is still, for the most part, maintained in this country; and has recently been defended by Drs. Stanton and Sanday, and by Principal Drummond of Manchester College, Oxford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authorship and Historical Character of the Fourth Gospel Within this more limited range, however, our enquiry still does not profess to be exhaustive. It is a subdivision of a division. It is confined to what is commonly known as the internal evidence to the character of the Gospel. Several reasons seem to make this limitation of treatment desirable. The subject of the external evidence has been pretty well fought out. The opposing parties are probably as near to an agreement as they ever will be. It will hardly be an unfair statement of the case for those who reject the Johannean authorship of the Gospel, to say, that the external evidence is com patible with that supposition. And on the other hand, we may equally say for those who accept the Johannean authorship, that the external evidence would not be sufficient alone to prove it'. As it at present stands, the controversy may be regarded as drawn; and it is not likely that the position of parties will be materially altered. Book The Fourth Gospel and the Synoptists

Download or read book The Fourth Gospel and the Synoptists written by F. W. Worsley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel and the Synoptists: Being a Contribution to the Study of the Johannine Problem I have tried in the following pages to deal with one single aspect of the Johannine problem; and it is one which seems to me to have important bearing upon the question of authorship. Moreover, I have rigidly refrained from entering upon issues suggested at almost every turn, in order that the main point may not be obscured. Any digressions which occur are, I think, absolutely necessary, as being strictly germane to the central theme. There is no claim put forward that the work is specially original. Upon such a subject the desire for originality constitutes a grave danger in these days of theories. Scriptural quotations are from the Revised Version. Footnotes have been almost entirely dispensed with; for while at times they seemed necessary, yet for the most part they are to the average reader "anathema." I am, of course, greatly indebted to those who have already written upon the Gospel, but I must content myself with a general acknowledgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authorship of the Fourth Gospel: External Evidences In regard to this collateral question, then, I conceive that decided progress has. Been made in a direction favorable to the possibility (to put it mildly) of the Johannean authorship of the Fourth Gospel. We do not know anything concern ing the theological position of the Apostle John, which justi fies us in assuming that twenty years after the destruction of Jerusalem he could not have written such a work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical and Religious Value of the Fourth Gospel Every reader of the New Testament is conscious of a difference when he passes from the first three Gospels to the Gospel of John. The earlier Gospels are distinct in character from one another, and are sometimes at variance in their record of facts; but they all present the same general picture of our Lord's life and teaching. They are termed the "Synoptic Gospels," since they deal substantially with a common material from a common point of view. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Witness of the Fourth Gospel There are questions raised in our present life which require our personal answer. As these ques tions are defined more clearly we formulate our answer more definitely till we approach our final answer, which is no longer up for review or even subject to change. Thus we are the voluntary or involuntary exemplars of our own theory of exist ence. We decide for ourselves just what life shall mean for us, and offer to others our solution of the problem of our present existence. As our mental and moral equipment fits us for this task, we should suffer no real hardship in assuming our responsibility nor ever feel inclined to shirk it by leaving our case to be decided by others or allowing it to go by default. Men are made to act intelligently, morally, and religiously. They are constituted for self-knowledge; for association with their fellows, and for the perception of God and the appreciation of God. So we see that reve lation finds a place in man's constitution as well as in God's purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel in Research and Debate: A Series of Essays on Problems Concerning Cerning the Origin and Value of the Anonymous Writings to the Apostle John It is possible that Bishop Lightfoot, were he living to-day, might modify somewhat the terms by which he characterizes his Opponents. Those who antagonize - not the claim of this Gospel to be the work of John the son of Zebedee; for, Bishop Lightfoot to the contrary notwithstanding, the Gospel does not profess to have been written by him - but the theory traceable to about 170 A. D. Imputing its authorship to the beloved disciple, are still accustomed to being de scribed as rationalists and Unitarians, and by no means anticipate that the defenders of the Gospel will altogether refrain from the imputation of evil motives of which the example has been SO conspicuously set. In this no im mediate change is to be expected. But inasmuch as on the one Side a considerable and increasing number of scholars of Bishop Lightfoot's own evangelical type of belief are to-day joining the ranks of his Opponents on the Johannine ques tion, while on the other one of the most eminent and con spicuous defenders of the genuineness is both a Unitarian and a denier of that most stupendous miracle the raising of Lazarus, it is possible his phraseology might be altered.
