Book Treating and Preventing Obesity

Download or read book Treating and Preventing Obesity written by Jan Östman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity now represents a serious problem in industrialized nations. An increasingly large number of people, especially children, are overweight - leading to subsequent illness and a reduced life expectancy. At long last, with this first evidence-based review of the current intervention strategies for treating and preventing obesity clinicians and health insurers have a guide that allows them to select the most efficient and cost-effective method of treatment for any given state of the illness. The whole is backed by extensive tables, a checklist for quality assurance and an extensive glossary. With a foreword by George A. Bray, Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University and Chief of the Clinical Obesity section: ""Treating and Preventing Obesity - An Evidence Based Review" provides a careful and thoughtful assessment of this disease and the options for its control and treatment. It started with the medical model where cure is the outcome. This valuable report provides a timely new analysis of a growing problem."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, there has been growing medical interest in the problem of obesity. Although this may not have resulted in a dramatic breakthrough in our understanding of the condition, at least we are now more aware of our ignorance. Possibly this partly explains the increasing medical concern for, and sympathy in, the management of the obese. In the introductory chapter, John Garrow says that he believes it would be better to treat a few people well than many subjects unsuccessfully. This theme is developed in those chapters which deal with specific forms of therapy including exercise, protein-sparing fasting and bypass surgery, while the chapters on pharmacological agents review our knowledge, and our ignorance, of the mode of action and efficacy of the currently available drugs. Almost in contrast, the chapter on behavioural therapy and group therapy suggests that obesity is a problem which could best be tackled on a community basis. Clearly such an approach is very attractive, and the combination of behavioural therapy and slimming organizations would appear to offer the best prospects of controlling most subjects' weight problems. There will always remain, however, the individual patient in whom there will be a place for the various special techniques now available. It is hoped that this book will contribute to a greater understanding of the various problems faced by the obese, and the regimes that can be offered. J. F. Book Obesity in America

Download or read book Obesity in America written by George A. Bray and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Most of the papers presented were prepared by the various conference task forces. A distinction is made between overweight and obesity; the former indicating an excess of body weight to height, the latter a surplus of fat. It is agreed that obesity is the result of a continued excessive consumption of food, but why such consumption occurs is not understood. The correlation of exercise and diet is discussed. Although skinfold thickness is considered the best measure of obesity, interpretation of the measurement is still a problem. The relationship between obesity and various body disorders needs further research. The dangers of obesity, including diseases associated with the condition, are discussed and further research is recommended. The various treatments for obesity have attendant risks which should be carefully considered. Control of obesity, which is largely the result of life style, will be most effective when people in both medical and nonmedical fields work together in a joint effort.

Book Progress in Behavior Modification

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Behavior Modification, Volume 4, is a multidisciplinary serial publication that encompasses the contributions of psychology, psychiatry, social work, speech therapy, education, and rehabilitation. This serial aims to meet the need for a review publication that undertakes to present yearly in-depth evaluations that include a scholarly examination of theoretical underpinnings, a careful survey of research findings, and a comparative analysis of existing techniques and methodologies. The discussions center on a wide spectrum of child and adult disorders. The present volume opens with a chapter on behavioral treatment for obesity. This is followed by separate chapters on applications of reinforcement techniques in the areas of pollution control and energy conservation, job performance and unemployment, community self-government, racial integration, and others; and behavior modification in community settings. Subsequent chapters deal with demand characteristics in behavior modification; the clinical utility of biofeedback procedures; and the technology of training parents in behavior therapy. The final chapter reviews the rationale and empirical support for the extinction approach of implosive (flooding) therapy.

Download or read book Weight Management written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. To aid in developing strategies for prevention and remediation of overweight in military personnel, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command requested the Committee on Military Nutrition Research to review the scientific evidence for: factors that influence body weight, optimal components of a weight loss and weight maintenance program, and the role of gender, age, and ethnicity in weight management.

Book International Handbook of Behavior Modification and Therapy

Download or read book International Handbook of Behavior Modification and Therapy written by Alan S. Bellack and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of behavior therapy over the past 20 years has been well doc umented. Yet the geometric expansion of the field has been so great that it deserves to be recounted. We all received our graduate training in the mid to late 1960s. Courses in behavior therapy were then a rarity. Behavioral training was based more on informal tutorials than on systematic programs of study. The behavioral literature was so circumscribed that it could be easily mastered in a few months of study. A mere half-dozen books (by Wolpe, Lazarus, Eysenck, Ullmann, and Krasner) more-or-Iess comprised the behavioral library in the mid- 1960s. Semirial works by Ayllon and Azrin, Bandura, Franks, and Kanfer in 1968 and 1969 made it only slightly more difficult to survey the field. Keeping abreast of new developments was not very difficult, as Behaviour Research and Therapy and the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis were the only regular outlets for behavioral articles until the end of the decade, when Behavior Therapy and Be havior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry first appeared. We are too young to be maudlin, but "Oh for the good old days!" One of us did a quick survey of his bookshelves and stopped counting books with behavior or behavioral in the titles when he reached 100. There were at least half again as many behavioral books without those words in the title.

Book Practical Lipid Management

Download or read book Practical Lipid Management written by Peter P. Toth and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-10-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lipid management is a key part of medical practice, affecting the prevention and treatment of several diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. A practical text on the clinical management of dyslipidemias, Practical Lipid Management balances conceptual development and pathophysiology with a straightforward approach to the identification and treatment of abnormalities in lipid metabolism. The book explores the role of novel risk markers in clinical practice, summarizes the current guidelines for lipid management, and offers a critical and systematic approach to interpreting the results of clinical trials. A feature of the book is a set of sidebars which explore current controversies and unanswered questions in clinical lipidology. The treatment of specific dyslipidemias is illustrated with case studies. Treatment algorithms are also provided. Practical Lipid Management details the relationship between specific lipids, lipoproteins and cardiovascular disease, provides guidance on the etiology and diagnosis of lipid abnormalities, summarizes current understanding of atherogenesis, and reviews the evidence base for the use of therapeutic lifestyle change and specific lipid-lowering medications to reduce morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. Practical Lipid Management provides a concise summary of best practice according to various international guidelines, making it a useful tool for all primary care physicians and others involved in the management of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. It will serve as an evidence-based, rapid, and valuable resource for family physicians, internists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, cardiologists, endocrinologists and allied health professionals involved in the care of patients with lipid disorders.
