Book The Problem of Conduct

Download or read book The Problem of Conduct written by A. E. Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Conduct: A Study in the Phenomenology of Ethics The present work is practically identical with one which obtained the Green Moral Philosophy Prize in the University of Oxford for the year 1899, the topic proposed for discussion to competitors being "the Reciprocal Relations between Ethics and Metaphysics." Except for the occasional removal or addition of a few lines of text or explanatory footnote and the correction of obvious inaccuracies, the Essay appears now in the form in which it was submitted to the judges. In the numerous cases where I am indebted to previous writers I have, except where the allusion was manifest of itself, regularly endeavoured to indicate my obligation in a footnote; should any exception to this rule be discovered I trust the omission will be put down to unintentional oversight. There is one obligation, however, which seems to me to call for special acknowledgment here. To the writings of my friend, Mr. F. H. Bradley, especially to certain portions of his Appearance and Reality, I believe myself to owe, directly or indirectly, almost everything in this Essay that possesses any value. The frequent reference to Mr. Bradley's works in my footnotes are far from being an adequate expression of my debt. It may seem strange that a work originally written in connection with a prize instituted in commemoration of the late Professor T. H. Green should contain a whole chapter of polemic directed against certain of his doctrines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Personal Problems of Conduct and Religion

Download or read book Personal Problems of Conduct and Religion written by J.G. McKenzie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1932, Professor McKenzie, author of ‘Souls in the Making’, had been deeply interested for years in helping those afflicted with nervous troubles, moral conflicts, or religious doubts. Each chapter of this book deals with some concrete problem which he had actually faced with one of his patients. He was convinced that many of the severer forms of neuroticism could be prevented if treated with understanding, and that many a parent could have been saved from making a fatal mistake in coping with a ‘difficult’ child, if they had only been taught to deal with such. The practical character of this book can best be judged by a glance at a few of the topics discussed: ‘An Adolescent Problem’, ‘The Problem of Growing Up’, ‘The Troubles of Old Age’, ‘Psychology of Sleeplessness’, ‘The Delinquent Child’, ‘Our Regrets and Our Fears’, ‘Psychology of Faith’.

Book Academic Ethics

Download or read book Academic Ethics written by Neil W. Hamilton and published by Greenwood Publishing Group. This book was released on 2002 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic professionals are expected to restrain self-interest, promote the ideals of public service, and maintain high standards of performance, while society grants the profession autonomy to regulate itself through peer review. Hamilton conveys the need for ethical leadership from within the peer collegium--a leadership that will foster a culture of high aspiration and peer review. This book suggests that the umbrella academic organizations step forward and draft a model code of ethics for the profession of higher education. Further discussion reveals how such attempts become difficult in face of the market's relentless pressure to frame the institution-student relationship in the economic terms of provider and customer. The book also offers an analysis of academic tradition, academic freedom, and the principles of professional conduct and shared governance. Typical problems in academic life are presented, each followed by questions designed to stimulate seminar-type discussion. Appendices contain a proposed code of ethics as well as AAUP statements on the subject.

Book Codes of Conduct

Download or read book Codes of Conduct written by David M. Messick and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1996-10-24 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite ongoing efforts to maintain ethical standards, highly publicized episodes of corporate misconduct occur with disturbing frequency. Firms produce defective products, release toxic substances into the environment, or permit dangerous conditions to existin their workplaces. The propensity for irresponsible acts is not confined to rogue companies, but crops up in even the most respectable firms. Codes of Conduct is the first comprehensive attempt to understand these problems by applying the principles of modern behavioral science to the study of organizational behavior. Codes of Conduct probes the psychological and social processes through which companies and their managers respond to a wide array of ethical dilemmas, from risk and safety management to the treatment of employees. The contributors employ a wide range of case studies to illustrate the effects of social influence and group persuasion, organizational authority and communication, fragmented responsibility, and the process of rationalization. John Darley investigates how unethical acts are unintentionally assembled within organizations as a result of cascading pressures and social processes. Essays by Roderick Kramer and David Messick and by George Loewenstein focus on irrational decision making among managers. Willem Wagenaar examines how worker safety is endangered by management decisions that focus too narrowly on cost cutting and short time horizons. Essays by Baruch Fischhoff and by Robyn Dawes review the role of the expert in assessing environmental risk. Robert Bies reviews evidence that employees are more willing to provide personal information and to accept affirmative action programs if they are consulted on the intended procedures and goals. Stephanie Goodwin and Susan Fiske discuss how employees can be educated to base office judgments on personal qualities rather than on generalizations of gender, race, and ethnicity. Codes of Conduct makes an important scientific contribution to the understanding of decisionmaking and social processes in business, and offers clear insights into the design of effective policies to improve ethical conduct.
