Book The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner Psychological Thriller

Download or read book The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner Psychological Thriller written by James Hogg and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story traces Robert Wringhim's gradual decline into despair and madness, as his doubts about the righteousness of his cause are counteracted by what appears to be the Devil himself, who is increasing domination over his life. Finally, Robert loses control over his own identity and start's committing murders. The action of the novel is located in a historically definable Scotland with accurately observed settings, and simultaneously implies a pseudo-Christian world of angels, devils, and demonic possession. Many of the events of the novel are narrated twice; first by the 'editor', who gives his account of the facts as he understands them to be, and then in the words of the 'sinner' himself. Considered by turns part-gothic novel, part-psychological mystery, it can be thought of as an early example of modern crime fiction in which the story is told, for the most part, from the point of view of its criminal anti-hero. James Hogg (1770-1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farmhand, and was largely self-educated through reading. He was a friend of many of the great writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott, of whom he later wrote an unauthorized biography.

Download or read book The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner Gothic Classic written by James Hogg and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In James Hogg's 'The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner', the reader is taken on a haunting journey into the dark realms of human psychology and religious fanaticism. Written in a fragmented, multi-narrative style, the novel blurs the lines between reality and illusion, truth and fiction, making it a seminal work in the Gothic literary tradition. Hogg explores themes of duality, morality, and the nature of sin, challenging the reader to question the very foundations of good and evil. The book's intricate plot and unreliable narrators keep the reader on edge, creating a sense of unease that lingers long after the final page is turned. James Hogg, a Scottish author and poet, drew inspiration from his own religious background and the folklore of his native land to craft this complex and thought-provoking novel. His deep understanding of human nature and the complexities of the human psyche shine through in the intricate characterization and psychological depth of the book. I highly recommend 'The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner' to readers who enjoy dark, atmospheric tales that delve into the depths of the human soul. Download or read book Intimations written by Annette Insdorf and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first study in English of a master of Polish cinema, Annette Insdorf explores Has’s thirteen feature films with the same deep insight of her groundbreaking book on Krzysztof Kieslowski, Double Lives, Second Chances (Northwestern, 2013). Wojciech Has’s films are still less known outside of his native Poland than those of his countrymen Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi, and Krzysztof Kieslowski. Yet thanks to his singular vision, many critics rank Has among the masters of world cinema. Some of his movies have developed a cult following, notably The Saragossa Manuscript, the favorite film of the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, which has been praised by directors such as Luis Buñuel, Francis Ford Coppola, and Roman Polanski. Has’s films reveal the inner lives of his characters, which he portrays by giving free rein to his own wildly creative imagination. In addition toThe Saragossa Manuscript, his diverse and innovative filmography includes The Hourglass Sanatorium, a vividly surreal depiction of Hassidic life in Poland between the world wars; The Noose, a stark poetic drama about a lucid alcoholic who knows he will not be able to kick the habit; and How to Be Loved, in which an actress remembers her wartime past. Has made disparate but formally striking movies infused with European strains of existentialism and the avant-garde. With many of his films being restored and rereleased, new generations of film lovers are discovering his artistic genius. Intimations: The Cinema of Wojciech Has is the definitive guide in English to his work.

  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Israel Rank written by Roy Horniman and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'There is an old saying, 'Murder will out.' I am really unable to see why this should be so...' Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal (1907) inspired the classic Ealing film Kind Hearts and Coronets. But though both works are comedies about a serial murderer, they are different creatures. The eponymous narrator of Roy Horniman's novel, son of a Jewish commercial traveller, offers his memoirs from the condemned cell , having murdered six people who stood between him and an earldom he hoped to inherit. Through Israel's story Horniman explores and parodies the anti-Semitic attitudes of Edwardian England. 'A superb thriller, but also a disturbing study in human nature. The narrative pace never slackens, thanks to the spareness and elegance of Horniman's prose... it is a book of its time, quite faithful to it, and (despite its 400 pages) over all too quickly.' Simon Heffer, in his Preface

Book Enlightenment and Political Fiction

Download or read book Enlightenment and Political Fiction written by Cecilia Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The easy accessibility of political fiction in the long eighteenth century made it possible for any reader or listener to enter into the intellectual debates of the time, as much of the core of modern political and economic theory was to be found first in the fiction, not the theory, of this age. Amusingly, many of these abstract ideas were presented for the first time in stories featuring less-than-gifted central characters. The five particular works of fiction examined here, which this book takes as embodying the core of the Enlightenment, focus more on the individual than on social group. Nevertheless, in these same works of fiction, this individual has responsibilities as well as rights—and these responsibilities and rights apply to every individual, across the board, regardless of social class, financial status, race, age, or gender. Unlike studies of the Enlightenment which focus only on theory and nonfiction, this study of fiction makes evident that there was a vibrant concern for the constructive as well as destructive aspects of emotion during the Enlightenment, rather than an exclusive concern for rationality.

Book The Glass Half Full

Download or read book The Glass Half Full written by Eleanor le and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-help book for the Scottish psyche. Cultural Miserablism: the power of the negative story with no redemption and no escape, that wallows in its own bleakness. Scotland is a small and immensely creative country. The role of the arts and culture is one that many are rightly proud of. But do we portray Scotland in the light we should? There is a tendency in film, literature and other cultural output to portray the negative aspects of Scottish life. In The Glass Half Full, filmmaker Eleanor le and academic David Manderson explore the origins of this bleak take on Scottish life, its literary and cultural expressions, and how this phenomenon in film has risen to the level of a genre which audiences both domestic and international see as a recognisable story of contemporary Scotland. What does miserablism tell us about ourselves? When did we become cultural victims? Is it time we move away from an image of Scotland that constantly casts itself as the poor relation? From the Trainspotting to the Kailyard, The Glass Half Full confronts the negative Scotland we portray not only to the world but, most importantly, ourselves. Do [they] accurately reflect the reality of life in Scotland for the majority of the population or are they just 'stories' we like to tell ourselves about ourselves? ELEANOR LE Our greatest export is the diversity of our fiction, the myriad of alternatives between its contrasts and all its new heroes and heroines. It's time we knew it. DAVID MANDERSON
