The hour and the scene were one of those impres sions which make up a little, in Switzer land, for the modern indignity of travel the promiscuities and vulgarities, the sta tion and the hotel, the gregarious patience, the struggle for a scrappy attention, the reduction to a numbered state. The high valley was pink with the mountain rose, the cool air as fresh as if the world were young. There was a faint flush of afternoon on undiminished snows, and the fraternizing tinkle of the unseen cattle came to'us with a cropped and sun warmed odor. The balconied inn stood on the very neck of the sweetest pass in the Oberland, and for a week we had had company and weather. This was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Life: The Wheel of Time Lord Beaupre, the Visits Collaboration Owen Wingrave Vawdrey had marched, with his even pace and his perfectly good conscience, into the flat country of anecdote, where stories are visible from afar like windmills and signposts but I observed after a little that Lady Mellifonts attention wandered. I happened to be sitting next her. I noticed that her eyes rambled a little anxiously over the lower slopes of the mountains. At last, after looking at her watch, she said to me: Do you know where they went? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "There could hardly be a greater shock of contrast than to pass from Mr. Kipling to Mr. Henry James. It is like passing from a swarming world of tropical sunshine into some dim-lighted Hades, peopled with low-voiced aristocratic shades. It takes us some time to realise that we are still dealing with flesh and blood. And I confess that Mr. James's dramatis persona grow too shadowy for me, their drama too imperceptibly refined, and the real pleasure I find in Mr. James's more recent books is that of the style-when it also is not too pedantically wire-drawn. Some of the characterisations in The Private Life and other stories are very happy. A lady in perpetual mourning had been described as 'the queen of night,' and Mr. James adds, 'the term was descriptive if you understood that the night was cloudy.' She was also 'rather submissively sad. She was like a woman with a painless malady." -Retrospective Reviews: 1891-1893 By Richard Le Gallienne "The Wheel of Time is the longest and most highly elaborated, Collaboration, the finest spun and least probable, and the story of Owen Wingrave, the subtlest, most suggestive and most pathetic. In the first, Maurice Glanvil's fine feeling for beauty prevented him from marrying plain Fanny Knocker-horrible name! He permitted her to think he was going to give her his hand and name and accept her wealth, and then ran away. Twenty years later he returns to London with a short, plain daughter, found Fanny a splendid, wealthy widow, proposed marriage to her, and was rejected. The plain daughter fell in love with the widow's handsome son, and the kind-hearted woman tried to arrange a match, but the youth fled and the girl died. Of course this is not Mr. James' story. Nobody can letell his stories in little. But there's the plot. Owen Wingrave is a strung fellow, physically, but seems to have inherited the taint of insanity. He is destined for the army, but conceives a horror of war. This is another tragic tale, with a mystical background, and there is a feeling of terror in it that is well simulated and sustained. All of Mr. James' tales, nowadays, tend to the same conclusion, that the life we are living is a pretty bad sort of live to live. But he tells them beautifully." -N. Y. Times.

She was in perpetual mourning, and wore numberless ornaments of jet and onyx, a thousand clicking chains and bugles and beads. I had heard Mrs. Adney call her the queen of night, and the term was descriptive if you understood that the night was cloudy. She had a secret, and if you didn’t find it out as you knew her better you at least perceived that she was gentle and unaffected and limited, and also rather submissively sad. She was like a woman with a painless malady. I told her that I had merely seen her husband and his companion stroll down the glen together about an hour before, and suggested that Mr. Adney would perhaps know something of their intentions....FROM THE BOOKS

Book Henry James Complete Stories Vol 4 1892 1898 LOA 82

Download or read book Henry James Complete Stories Vol 4 1892 1898 LOA 82 written by Henry James and published by Library of America. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 974 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Library of America volume is one of five that make available for the first time in new, complete, and authoritative editions the astonishing abundance of invention and unwavering intensity of the aesthetic vision of Henry James as displayed in more than one hundred world-famous stories ranging from brief anecdotes to richly developed novellas. Equally adept at ironic comedy, muted tragedy, and supernatural fantasy, at lively social satire and nuanced portraiture, James in his shorter works explores a staggering variety of situations and emotions. Here are courtships and legacies; the worlds of literature, theater, and the popular press; the paradoxes of temperament and the constraints of custom; the clash of conscience and desire. Stylistically, the stories allowed James to experiment with tones and devices quite different from his novels—dramatic plot twists and surprise endings, swift pacing and ebullient humor. The brilliance of his technical command allowed him to transform the tiniest of suggestions—a fleetingly observed gesture, an anecdote dropped at a dinner party—into fiction remarkable for its lambent surfaces and intricate psychological counterpoint. The twenty-one stories in this volume represent James at the peak of his storytelling powers. Among them are “The Turn of the Screw,” one of his most popular works, and a terrifying exercise in psychological horror centering on the corruption of childhood innocence; “The Real Thing,” a playful consideration of the illusion of art and the paradoxes of authenticity; “The Figure in the Carpet,” “The Death of the Lion,” and “The Middle Years,” three very different expositions of the mysteries of authorship, embodying some of James’s most profound insights into the nature of his own art; “The Altar of the Dead,” a somber, ultimately wrenching meditation on the relation of the living to the dead; and “In the Cage,” an extended evocation of the inner life of a young woman trapped in a dehumanizing job at a postal-and-telegraph office. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.
