Book The Print Collector s Handbook

Download or read book The Print Collector s Handbook written by Alfred Whitman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Print-Collector's Handbook In the following pages an attempt is made to supply answers to some of the many questions that a number of years' experience has shown to be those most frequently asked by art amateurs at the commencement of their print-collecting, and also by those who have devoted some time and attention to the pursuit of their hobby. In consequence of the limitation of a single volume like the present one, it has been thought best to refrain from commenting upon the etchings and engravings of living artists whose place in art is not yet definitely fixed. Most of the illustrations have been made by the half-tone process; but in order that collectors may more closely examine the actual technique of the different methods of engraving, specimens of the various styles have been reproduced in collotype. In this latter process no screen or visible foreign grain intervenes to impair or destroy the texture of the original work, and the results are therefore as faithful as a mechanical process will yield. These collotype reproductions can be easily identified by reference to the List of Illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Passionate Collector

Download or read book The Passionate Collector written by Roy R. Neuberger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-05-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few living persons have served the Metropolitan Museum of Art-indeed, the entire world of art and art museums-longer, or with more distinction, than Roy Neuberger. A man of taste, passion, persistence, and generosity, he has shared much of his great private collection with the public, and for generations has supported activities that bring people to museums, and motivate them to return again and again. Now, this giant of a man has recorded eighty years of his life-and the result is entertaining, illuminating, and, like the tireless gentleman himself, inspiring." -Philippe de Montebello, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Equal to his passion for investing is Roy Neuberger's love for art-which he has collected and encouraged for eight decades. In The Passionate Collector: Eighty Years in the World of Art, you'll follow this fascinating financial figure and great patron of the arts from the streets of 1920s Paris to the museums of New York as he develops the eye of a connoisseur and begins to collect great contemporary art. Vivid detail puts you in the center of the action as Neuberger collects the brilliant artists of his time-Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Edward Hopper; works with legendary art dealers Paul Rosenberg, Betty Parsons, Sidney Janis, and Leo Castelli; and befriends avid collectors, including the incomparable Duncan Phillips. You'll follow Neuberger as he strives to further the cause of contemporary American artists by exhibiting, lending, and donating from his growing collection, and becoming an activist for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney. You'll also see how the Neuberger Museum of Art was created at the urging of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and how it continues to fascinate art enthusiasts today. Part personal memoir, part history of art, The Passionate Collector offers a unique view of twentieth-century American art from a man who has lived it.

Book excerpt: Ferdinand Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus and author of the first published account of a voyage to the New World, was also the owner of one of the largest private libraries assembled during the Renaissance and the most important early collection of prints. Although the collection has vanished, about half of it has been reconstructed by Mark McDonald from information found in a detailed inventory that survives in Seville. This beautifully produced book catalogues 110 of the most significant prints in Columbus's collection. The introductory chapters discuss Columbus's life and work and show how the reconstruction of his collection has radically transformed our understanding of the print industry in Renaissance Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Print Collector: An Introduction to the Knowledge Necessary for Forming a Collection of Ancient Prints The study of art needs no apology. Man may sometimes acquire too much power, or too much money, for his own advantage or for the good of his fellow-men, but true art is like true religion - the more it is cultivated the richer are the heart and mind of its possessor. Should it not beget wisdom, it will increase knowledge; and these, if not twin brothers, are very closely related. There are good and bad systems of religion, as there are true and false forms of art, and a consideration of this analogy might be followed up with profit, to the edification of some people, and to the incredulity and disapprobation of others. In this new country, where for the last one hundred years utility has been the predominant idea, I have often wondered why the poetic mind of the age has not created a goddess of Utility, to whom we might render homage similar to that paid in the olden time at the shrines of the goddesses of Wisdom, Beauty, and Riches. We know that art in its highest forms is capable of inspiring the purest of religious sentiment, but this is only a portion of what it has done for the world in the past, and is capable of doing for us now. In all real art there is something which the lowliest person may partake of and enjoy; just as art may be found, and does exist, in the lowliest and simplest forms and detail.
