This book will be essential to sociologists, and others professionally interested in social science theory and the history of ideas. Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was both author and editor. He served in the later capacity for The Economist from 1843 to 1853. He is perhaps best known for applying evolutionary theory to social development. His best known works are Man versus the State, and The Multi-volumed System of Synthetic Philosophy. Jonathan H. Turner is a professor of sociology at the University of California, Riverside.
