Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Projective Geometry: Applied to the Straight Line and Conic This book has been written in the hope of placing in the hands of the pupil, who has mastered the portions of Euclid usually read, most, if not all, of the Pure Geometry which he requires in order to proceed to an Honours degree in Mathematics at any one of the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, London and Manchester. While the subject has been primarily considered from the projective point of view, considerable trouble has been taken to deduce the more important metrical properties of Conies from the projective theorems with which they are related. In an addendum a certain number of elementary theorems of a non-projective nature have been collected for reference. The author trusts that this book may do something to encourage the student not to neglect the methods of pure geometry. In every other branch of mathematics analysis now reigns supreme even in geometry it is fast gaining a predominance. Twenty years' experience as a Teacher of Projective Geometry and ten years' experience as an examiner of the University of London have led the author to regard this as a misfortune. When the great landmarks of Projective Geometry - the theorems of Pascal and Brianchon, of Carnot and Desargues, together with their immediate consequences - are clearly placed before the student, the author has found that even in the younger student an enthusiasm is aroused which is wanting in his study of other branches of Mathematics. In the examination room it has been found that students who have mastered and absorbed the principles of Pure Geometry have taken a superior place to those who depend on a facility for handling analytical expressions. Such a facility with practice may undoubtedly be acquired by most pupils, but for all who are worthy to take a mathematical degree the study of Pure Geometry is a matter of primary importance. Book Projective Geometry

Download or read book Projective Geometry written by John Wesley Young and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1930-12-31 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley Young co-authored with Oswald Veblen the first monograph on projective geometry in English. That careful and thorough axiomatic treatment remains read today. This volume is Young's attempt to write an accessible and intuitive treatment for non-specialists. The first five chapters are a careful and elementary treatment of the subject culminating in the theorems of Pascal and Brianchon and the polar system of a conic. Later chapters pull metric consequences from projective results and consider the Kleinian classification of geometries by their groups of transformations. This book, nearly a century after its initial publication, remains a very approachable and understandable treatment of the subject.

Book Introduction to Projective Geometry

Download or read book Introduction to Projective Geometry written by C. R. Wylie and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lucid introductory text offers both an analytic and an axiomatic approach to plane projective geometry. The analytic treatment builds and expands upon students' familiarity with elementary plane analytic geometry and provides a well-motivated approach to projective geometry. Subsequent chapters explore Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry as specializations of the projective plane, revealing the existence of an infinite number of geometries, each Euclidean in nature but characterized by a different set of distance- and angle-measurement formulas. Outstanding pedagogical features include worked-through examples, introductions and summaries for each topic, and numerous theorems, proofs, and exercises that reinforce each chapter's precepts. Two helpful indexes conclude the text, along with answers to all odd-numbered exercises. In addition to its value to undergraduate students of mathematics, computer science, and secondary mathematics education, this volume provides an excellent reference for computer science professionals.

This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course in Projective Geometry This work is intended for the use of students who have read the substance of Euclid, Books I.-XI., and who desire some introduction to the. Properties of the conic before proceeding to the study of the more advanced works on modern pure geometry. The subject of Geometrical Conics, through the medium of which such an introduction is usually acquired, often proves repulsive to the average student. In my Opinion this is due to two causes first, the demands which it makes upon the memory owing to its lack of coher ence as commonly treated; and, secondly, to the very slight extension of outlook as regards method which it affords. In the presentation here adopted, which, I venture to think, is in some respects original, I have endeavoured to overcome as far as possible these defects, while at the same time giving a slight sketch of the method of projection, and of the great principles of homography and duality upon which the further development of pure geometry so greatly depends. No systematic treatment of imaginary elements or of the theory of involution is attempted, as these subjects are, in my judgment, unsuitable for a first course.
