Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Ornament As Examiner on the Principles of Ornament at the Science and Art Department, I found there was no good English text-book on the subject, so the necessary information could only be picked up by extensive reading and independent observation, and these are not to be expected from young students. Certain parts of the subject have been admirably treated by Moody in his Lectures and Lessons on Art, - in fact I know of no book where the subjects treated show such keen observation and profound knowledge, but they are embedded in lectures on other subjects, and the book has no index. Having written the original Syllabus on the Principles of Ornament, I was disposed to write a text-book, had not other avocations prevented me. Last year Mr. Ward's book on The Elementary Principles of Ornament was sent me, and though it was a useful book and had a glossary, it contained some doubtful passages, and being printed from a course of lectures it was a little too discursive. Download or read book The Principles of Interior Decoration Classic Reprint written by Bernard C. Jakway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Interior Decoration There have been many attempts to formulate the principles of interior decoration, and there will no doubt be many more. The final work on any art can never be written, since artistic theory does not precede the practice of creative artists, but follows after. Of the present book I can say truthfully only that it represents a great amount of hard work, now finished. With a profound sense of relief I pass the work of judgment on to the reader. Book The Principles of Form in Ornamental Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Form in Ornamental Art Classic Reprint written by Charles Martel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Form in Ornamental Art So far as the very limited space at command has permitted, the following pages will be found to contain a summary of the most important canons of Ornamental Art in connection with Form and its treatment, in Architectonics, and in the Ceramic Art. These sub jects are chosen for their primary importance in Orna mentation, and the community of principles existing among the various arts permits their application to the Technic arts generally: to all works, requiring or admitting of embellishment. It has not been thought necessary to enter upon the question of Colour, as that subject has been fully discussed in a scientific manner, by M. E. Chevreul, to whose work the student is referred. A book on so vast and comprehensive a subject as Ornamentation, admits of an infinite amount of illus tration. Ornamental Art is best illustrated, not by engravings, but in the original works upon which it has been applied. The student will find abundant illustrations of the most instructive character in the treasures of art contained in the British Museum, in the Ceramic collection at the Geological Museum in Jermyn Street, and at the South Kensington Museum. All that relates to Architectonics receives most valuable illustration from the materials of the Courts of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. Book Classical Principles for Modern Design

Download or read book Classical Principles for Modern Design written by Thomas Jayne and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interior designer and decorative arts historian Thomas Jayne takes on the redoubtable Edith Wharton and her co-author Ogden Codman, whose 1897 book The Decoration of Houses is acknowledged as the Bible of American interior design. Wharton and Codman advocated for classical simplicity and balance, replacing the excesses of the Gilded Age. In Jayne’s view, “The Decoration of Houses is the level-headed, indispensable book on the subject. It is not an overstatement to say that it is the most important decorating book ever written.” How much of Wharton and Codman’s advice and how many of their principles are still applicable today? In Classical Principles for Modern Design, Jayne argues that Wharton and Codman’s fundamental ideas about the proportion and planning of space create the most harmonious and livable interiors, whether traditional or contemporary. His authoritative and engaging text traces contemporary ideas about design elements and furnishing rooms back to Wharton and Codman and shows where his design approach coincides and where it diverges from their views. The book follows the chapter organization of The Decoration of Houses—chapters on walls, doors, windows and curtains, ceilings and floors, etc.—and adds important new perspectives on the design of kitchens and the use of color, both major subjects that Wharton and Codman did not address. Drawing on his own work at Jayne Design Studio, Jayne has selected elegant, traditional interiors that demonstrate these principles. Projects range from a restoration of historic eighteenth-century public rooms in Crichel House in Dorset, England, to a mountain retreat in the wilds of Montana to an array of luxurious New York City apartments and country houses in the Hudson Valley. Captured in lush photographs by Don Freeman and others, all speak to Thomas Jayne’s commitment to the primacy of function, quality, and simplicity, derived from the ancient tradition of classical design. As he says, “Tradition is not about what was. Tradition is now.”

Book Principles of Decoration in the Roman World

Download or read book Principles of Decoration in the Roman World written by Annette Haug and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the manner in which architectural settings and action contexts influenced the perception of decoration in the Roman world. Crucial to the relationship between ancient viewers and media was the concept of decor, a term employed by Vitruvius and other Roman authors to describe the appropriateness of particular decorative elements to the environment in which they were located. The papers in this volume examine a diverse range of decorated spaces, from press rooms to synagogues, through the lens of decor. In doing so, they shed new light on the decorative principles employed across Roman Italy and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature and Ornament: Nature, the Raw Material of Design This volume is one of two which, taken together, Will more than cover the ground of my Nature in Ornament, first published in 1891. When it came to the consideration of a fourth edition of the book, I determined to make good a deficiency I had always felt in it, and to treat more fully than before the ornamental aspect of nature generally, and especially of natural growth in plant form. Starting with that intention, I have ended in writing two entirely new volumes of which this is the first. The general purpose of them is to show the development of ornament from natural form, and its constant relation to nature; and further to deduce from the practice of past masters something like guiding principles to help the student in making his own best use of natural form in ornament. The special purpose of this volume is to illustrate as fully as possible the decorative and ornamental character of natural growth, and its infinite suggestiveness as the starting point in design.
