Book Elements of Machine Design

Download or read book Elements of Machine Design written by O. A. Leutwiler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Machine Design The purpose of the author, in preparing this book, has been to present in fairly complete form a discussion of the fundamental principles involved in the design and operation of machinery. An attempt is also made to suggest or outline methods of reasoning that may prove helpful in the design of various machine parts. The book is primarily intended to be helpful in the courses of machine design as taught in the American technical schools and colleges, and it is also hoped that it may prove of service to the designers in engineering offices. Since a text on machine design presupposes a knowledge of Strength of Materials and Mechanics of Machinery, a chapter reviewing briefly the more important straining actions to which machine parts are subjected is included as well as a chapter discussing briefly the properties of the common materials used in the construction of machinery. Furthermore, throughout the book, the question of the application of mechanical principles to machines and devices has not been overlooked, and many recent devices of merit are illustrated, described and analyzed. A considerable amount of the material in this book was published several years ago in the form of notes which served as a text in the courses of machine design at the University of Illinois. In the preparation of the manuscript the author consulted rather freely the standard works on the subject of machine design, the transactions of the various national engineering societies and the technical press of America and England. Whenever any material from such sources of information was used, the author endeavored to give suitable acknowledgment. The numerous illustrations used throughout the book have been selected with considerable care and in the majority of cases they represent correctly to scale the latest practice in the design of the parts of modern machines. At the close of nearly every chapter a brief list of references to sources of additional information is given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. This book is the outgrowth of a somewhat smaller treatise which was prepared and printed by the writer in 1894 for the use of the classes in mechanical and electrical engineering at Sibley College, Cornell University. After having used the original for several years, it was decided to issue the work in revised form, making such corrections and changes as experience suggested. The present volume was prepared especially to bring together, and to present to the students in a condensed text-book, those principles and methods which are deemed most important in a general course on Kinematics. This is the only excuse offered for another book on a subject about which so much has been written. No pretension is made to originality except in the arrangement and manner of presenting a few subjects. Neither is the present work offered as in any sense a complete treatise on the Kinematics of Machinery. The treatment of many topics has been much abridged; particularly the portion relating to toothed gearing, a subject which is exhaustively treated in numerous available works. On the other hand, the discussions of the applications of such important conceptions as instantaneous centres, velocity diagrams, etc., are rather fuller than are found in many of the shorter works on Mechanism. The treatment of these subjects follows closely that given by Professor Kennedy in his admirable work on the Mechanics of Machinery. It is believed that the presentation of principles and methods, with illustrations of their applications, is the proper line to adopt in a text-book intended for a short general course on such a subject as Kinematics. The detailed description of usual forms, and the discussion of the innumerable considerations with which the expert in any line must be familiar are to be sought in special treatises....

Book Mechanical Design of Machine Components

Download or read book Mechanical Design of Machine Components written by Ansel C. Ugural and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyze and Solve Real-World Machine Design Problems Using SI Units Mechanical Design of Machine Components, Second Edition: SI Version strikes a balance between method and theory, and fills a void in the world of design. Relevant to mechanical and related engineering curricula, the book is useful in college classes, and also serves as a reference for practicing engineers. This book combines the needed engineering mechanics concepts, analysis of various machine elements, design procedures, and the application of numerical and computational tools. It demonstrates the means by which loads are resisted in mechanical components, solves all examples and problems within the book using SI units, and helps readers gain valuable insight into the mechanics and design methods of machine components. The author presents structured, worked examples and problem sets that showcase analysis and design techniques, includes case studies that present different aspects of the same design or analysis problem, and links together a variety of topics in successive chapters. SI units are used exclusively in examples and problems, while some selected tables also show U.S. customary (USCS) units. This book also presumes knowledge of the mechanics of materials and material properties. New in the Second Edition: Presents a study of two entire real-life machines Includes Finite Element Analysis coverage supported by examples and case studies Provides MATLAB solutions of many problem samples and case studies included on the book’s website Offers access to additional information on selected topics that includes website addresses and open-ended web-based problems Class-tested and divided into three sections, this comprehensive book first focuses on the fundamentals and covers the basics of loading, stress, strain, materials, deflection, stiffness, and stability. This includes basic concepts in design and analysis, as well as definitions related to properties of engineering materials. Also discussed are detailed equilibrium and energy methods of analysis for determining stresses and deformations in variously loaded members. The second section deals with fracture mechanics, failure criteria, fatigue phenomena, and surface damage of components. The final section is dedicated to machine component design, briefly covering entire machines. The fundamentals are applied to specific elements such as shafts, bearings, gears, belts, chains, clutches, brakes, and springs.
