Download or read book The Principles of Irrigation Practice Classic Reprint written by John A. Widtsoe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Irrigation Practice Irrigation and dry-farming are rapidly conquering drought. By these twin arts, bountiful and regular harvests may be gathered in the humid regions during the periodic dry seasons; and in the arid regions, the great deserts may be converted into most fruitful fields. Irrigation has a splendid record of success from the begin ning of history; dry-farming has only in recent days extended its conquests into the more arid regions; both have become more powerful in conquering drought as modern science has been applied to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation and Drainage: Principles and Practice of Their Cultural Phases Great pains has been taken to personally inspect the irrigation practices of both humid and arid climates in this country and in Europe, to gain a broader view of essential details, and to secure suitable illustrations, which are presented largely as photo-engravings, in the hope of getting closer to the spirit of the subject. Book Irrigation of Crops in the Southeastern United States

Download or read book Irrigation of Crops in the Southeastern United States written by R. R. Bruce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-16 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation of Crops in the Southeastern United States: Principles and Practice For typical crop, soil, and climate situations, procedures are outlined for selecting irrigation equipment and for operating the equipment to provide the dependable soil-water control necessary for meeting a crop's water needs. The recommended procedures emphasize crop and soil characteristics and the maintenance of a critical soil volume at less than a specified soil-water suction. Equal emphasis is placed upon excessive water application and the leaching of nitrogen or other mobile nutrients out of the root zone. The option of supplying certain chemicals, particularly readily leached nutrients, through the irrigation system is discussed. Book Irrigation

Download or read book Irrigation written by Hanbury Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation: Its Principles and Practice as a Branch of Engineering Irrigation is a subject which covers much ground, and cannot be confined within the narrow boundaries of a single volume. But the principles on which Irrigation Engineering is based can be collected in small compass, and be illustrated by examples of actual practice to the extent that space allows. What, therefore, this work attempts to do is to set forth the guiding principles that should govern the practice of irrigation, and to furnish illustrations of their application in existing canal systems. The majority of the illustrations have been selected from the wealth of material that the irrigation experience of India and Egypt supplies, for the following reasons. In the first place, I have been personally connected with irrigation in both countries, and can therefore handle the facts, relating to them, as one having authority on the subject, and not as the scribes, Whose methods I might be imitating were I to draw my illustrations from the records of other countries. In the second place, it is India that furnishes examples of irrigation on the largest scale, and that has been the school in which all British irrigation engineers, previously to England's occupa tion of Egypt, have undergone their training. Moreover, the excellent standard work on the subject, The Irrigation Works of India, by R. B. Buckley, provides in a convenient form more than enough material for copious illustrations, and I have made much use of it, with Mr. Buckley's kind permission. But it will be found that Egypt has been the favourite source of my borrowing. There are two good (so it appears to me) reasons for this. The first is that I am intimately acquainted with Egypt as an irrigating country. The second is that Egypt is par excellence the country of irrigation, as it is wholly depen dent for its existence on its mother, the Nile, from which it has never been weaned. Download or read book The Principles of Irrigation Practice written by John A. Widtsoe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Irrigation Practice Irrigation and dry-farming are rapidly conquering drought. By these twin arts, bountiful and regular harvests may be gathered in the humid regions during the periodic dry seasons; and in the arid regions, the great "deserts" may be converted into most fruitful fields. Irrigation has a splendid record of success from the beginning of history; dry-farming has only in recent days extended its conquests into the more arid regions; both have become more powerful in conquering drought as modern science has been applied to them. Successful irrigation-farming is the joint product of the engineer and the farmer. To the engineer is given the heavy and responsible task of constructing properly a permanent system of dams and canals from which water may be drawn; to the farmer belongs the apparently humble but unending and difficult task of using the water in the best manner for crop-production. Both workers are essential for success; but, the work of the farmer determines the permanence and extent of agriculture under irrigation. Much has been written about irrigation for the engineer, but little for the farmer. The few who have written about farming under irrigation have, most frequently, prepared crop or soil manuals, in which the use of water has formed a minor part. Book Irrigation Management

Book excerpt: In many countries irrigated agriculture consumes a large proportion of the available water resources, often over 70% of the total. There is considerable pressure to release water for other uses and, as a sector, irrigated agriculture will have to increase the efficiency and productivity of its water use. This is particularly true for manually operated irrigation systems managed by government agencies, which provide water for a large number of users on small landholdings and represent 60% of the total irrigated area worldwide. --

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation by Overhead Sprinkling Although the irrigation of truck crops by overhead sprinkling has long been a common practice in some parts of the United States, with some citrus fruits irrigated this way in Florida, the application of water by overhead sprinkling has but recently become a factor in California orchard irrigation practice. Though scattered installations which have been in operation for some years are to be found in various parts of the State, the majority now in operation have been established since 1924. Book Practical Irrigation and Pumping

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Irrigation and Pumping: Water Requirements, Methods of Irrigation and Analyses of Cost and Profit To people living anywhere on the American continent west of the hundredth meridian, the practice of irrigation as a fundamental necessity in the production of crops is SO common a matter and so thoroughly a part of their daily observation and experience, that they scarcely appreciate the viewpoint of the farmer of the humid regions, who stands more or less aghast at the idea of spending a large sum per acre to secure for the growth of the most common crops that moisture which under his conditions, nature itself provides.
