Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlarged and updated in 1983, this is the second edition of Dr Steel's popular textbook on interferometry. The text has been revised throughout and major additions have been made to reflect the phenomenal growth of laser techniques and applications. The book provides a general treatment that brings together the many different applications of the interference of light waves, light being used in its most general sense to include all electromagnetic radiation. The applications can cover precise measurement of length, the testing of optical components against a computed hologram, measurements of atmospheric pollution by infrared spectroscopy and many of the methods of radio astronomy and the measurement of size of visible stars. These apparently unrelated methods have a common theory, which the book presents and extends to each main field of application. It shows workers in one field how their problems relate to those in other fields, where they may have been solved already. The book will be found useful by anyone whose work involves one of the many applications of interferometric techniques.

Book Fourier Transform Interferometry

Download or read book Fourier Transform Interferometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic Michelson interferometer, as used for Fourier transform spectroscopy, is analyzed in this report. The principles of operation are explained, and its inherent limitations are shown. An original analysis of apodization, for the case of an off-axis detector field-of-view, is included in an appendix. Practical limitations of real instruments are also analyzed. These include misalignment, wavefront error, and noise sources. In another appendix, the use of retroreflectors in the interferometer is analyzed, and the effect of lateral displacement of a retroreflector is compared to that of mirror tilt in a plane-mirror interferometer. Special attention is given to sources of noise in the Fourier transform spectroradiometer, and expressions are derived for noise-equivalent radiance from these sources. The performance of a Fourier transform spectrometer is compared with that of a filter-wheel spectrometer having the same optical aperture and spectral resolution. The mathematical treatments in this report are sufficiently detailed that they should be easy to follow, once the optical principles are grasped. Some numerical calculations are included, based on the specifications of the proposed GOES High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder (GHIS).

Book Spatial Heterodyne Spectroscopy

Download or read book Spatial Heterodyne Spectroscopy written by Cara P. Perkins and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work presents a radiometric model of a spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS) and a corresponding interferogram-processing algorithm for the calculation of calibrated spectral radiance measurements. The SHS relies on Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FTS) principles, and shares design similarities with the Michelson Interferometer. The advantages of the SHS design, including the lack of moving parts, high throughput, and instantaneous spectral measurements, make it suitable as a field-deployable instrument. Operating in the long-wave infrared (LWIR), the imaging SHS design example included provides the capability of performing chemical detection based on reflectance and emissivity properties of surfaces of organic compounds. This LWIR SHS model takes into account the instruments entrance optics, interferometer, exit optics, and detection scheme to output realistic, interferometric data. The model serves as a tool to find the optimal SHS design parameters for the desired performance requirements and system application. It also assists in the data analysis and system characterization. The interferogram-processing algorithm performs flat-fielding and phase corrections as well as apodization before recovering the measured spectral radiance from the recorded interferogram via the Inverse Fourier Transform (IFT). The model and processing algorithm are tested with a variety of spectra and the results are comparable to those in the literature with a noise-equivalent change in temperature of 0.2K. These results demonstrate the model's validity and the algorithm's performance. Additional experiments show the algorithm's real-time processing capability, indicating the LWIR SHS system presented is feasible."--Abstract.

Book Spatio spectral Interferometric Imaging and the Wide field Imaging Interferometry Testbed

Download or read book Spatio spectral Interferometric Imaging and the Wide field Imaging Interferometry Testbed written by Alexander S. Iacchetta and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The light collecting apertures of space telescopes are currently limited in part by the size and weight restrictions of launch vehicles, ultimately limiting the spatial resolution that can be achieved by the observatory. A technique that can overcome these limitations and provide superior spatial resolution is interferometric imaging, whereby multiple small telescopes can be combined to produce a spatial resolution comparable to a much larger monolithic telescope. In astronomy, the spectrum of the sources in the scene are crucial to understanding the material composition of the sources. So, the ultimate goal is to have high-spatial-resolution imagery and obtain sufficient spectral resolution for all points in the scene. This goal can be accomplished through spatiospectral interferometric imaging, which combines the aperture synthesis aspects of a Michelson stellar interferometer with the spectral capabilities of Fourier transform spectroscopy. Spatio-spectral interferometric imaging can be extended to a wide-field imaging modality, which increases the collecting efficiency of the technique. This is the basis for NASA's Wide-field Imaging Interferometry Testbed (WIIT). For such an interferometer, there are two light collecting apertures separated by a variable distance known as the baseline length. The optical path in one of the arms of the interferometer is variable, while the other path delay is fixed. The beams from both apertures are subsequently combined and imaged onto a detector. For a fixed baseline length, the result is many low-spatial-resolution images at a slew of optical path differences, and the process is repeated for many different baseline lengths and orientations. Image processing and synthesis techniques are required to reduce the large dataset into a single high-spatial-resolution hyperspectral image. Our contributions to spatio-spectral interferometry include various aspects of theory, simulation, image synthesis, and processing of experimental data, with the end goal of better understanding the nature of the technique. We present the theory behind the measurement model for spatio-spectral interferometry, as well as the direct approach to image synthesis. We have developed a pipeline to preprocess experimental data to remove unwanted signatures in the data and register all image measurements to a single orientation, which leverages information about the optical system's point spread function. In an experimental setup, such as WIIT, the reference frame for the path difference measured for each baseline is unknown and must be accounted for. To overcome this obstacle, we created a phase referencing technique that leverages point sources within the scene of known separation in order to recover unknown information regarding the measurements in a laboratory setting. We also provide a method that allows for the measurement of spatially and spectrally complicated scenes with WIIT by decomposing them prior to scene projection"--Pages xii-xiii.
