The Period Covered Here Witness Indeed The Rise And Fall Of Hindu Culture, Its Very Interesting Evolution In Successive Periods Under Diverse Historical Conditions. Book The Religious Quest of India Hindu Ethics

Download or read book The Religious Quest of India Hindu Ethics written by John McKenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Quest of India, Hindu Ethics: A Historical and Critical Essay The subject of Hindu Ethics is one which in its whole range has not so far been submitted to scientific investigation, though many writers have dealt with aspects of Hindu ethical teaching, and studies of Hindu religion have generally involved some consideration of the bearings of religious doctrine on the moral life. The attempt is here made to fix attention more definitely on the ethical side of Hindu teaching. The aim of the writer has been to present the subject in a way that will make it intelligible to the ordinary educated reader, particularly to the educated Indian. He has sought at the same time, however, to maintain scientific accuracy in his discussion, and he hopes that he may have been able to contribute something to the study of a subject which he cannot but believe to be of the highest importance scientifically and practically. He believes, on the one hand, that some knowledge of Hindu thought should be of the greatest value to the Western student of ethics, for he has the feeling that Western ethical thinking has suffered from a certain insularity, which acquaintance with other systems of thought and life should help to remove. On the other hand, he believes that it is important that thoughtful Hindus should have their attention directed to the principles on which their practical life is based. He does not expect that all will agree with him in the conclusions to which he has been led, but he will have achieved something if he is able to lead some to examine for themselves the great questions on which he has touched. Book excerpt: This is the story of the religiosity of the ancient Aryan race of people who lived in their homeland called the Aryavarta or Bharata or India (now) from the most prehistoric times in the history of human civilisation, and their way of life called the Vedic Dharma, which forms the heart and soul of the present day Hindu Dharma or Hinduism. the general reader from any part of the world will find this small book to be quite informative about one of the most widely practiced and living religions of all times. Hindu Tenets is meant for those keen minds of a rejuvenating India who are professionally trained in the modern western way. It gives them a glimpse and feel of the Vedic Hindu Philosophy of life, how it evolved, developed and proliferated down south the Himalayas in the East, and also the way it stood so firm during the most testing times in the history of the world. This book lists the eleven principles on which the Vedic Hindu Dharma rests till today. They may be called the Eleven Tenets - the founding doctrines of Hinduism - to give the entire picture in a very concise form. the most significant among them are: belief in one Supreme Being, in His revealed wisdom in the shape of the Vedas; in the great law of Karma or Action; in the theory of Reincarnation of the soul; and belief in the legacy of the great rishis of the bygone days, who are the guiding force in the lives of Indians even today.
