Download or read book The Elements of English Versification Classic Reprint written by James Wilson Bright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of English Versification In the preparation of this text-book the immediate needs of the student have been kept in mind. Nothing has been assumed on his part, except a mind disposed to learn the plain truth of elementary facts. Of course this disposition of mind must usually be awakened to the required pitch of interest by the teacher, who, as in the case of any other subject he may teach, should be prepared to interpret and supplement an exposition of the elements of versification. But a text-book should help the teacher in his task of arousing and sustaining the students interest. In most instances such help consists both in a clear analysis and concrete illustration of subject-matter and in a plan of presentation that is adapted to the orderly stages of the student's progress. It is hoped that some share of the teacher's approval won by these merits of a text-book may be bestowed upon the treatise herewith submitted. The exclusion of controversial matter from books on versification is not so much the practice that it may be said to be usually expected. On the contrary, the avoidance of controversy on some points of the subject is likely to occasion in some minds an inclination to suspect either evasion of difficulties or unwarranted reliance on individual judgment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Versification If is now about thirty years since I prepared an American edition of a little book by the younger Tom Hood, which purported to set forth the rules of rime (the Rhymester, Appleton Co., and it is just twenty years since I first gave a course in metrical rhetoric to a class of undergraduates in Columbia College. And I have long felt the need of a simple text-book for the beginner, which would serve as an introduction to the study of English versi fication. There are many volumes devoted to the analysis of poetry, but there are few which confine themselves wholly to the problems of prosody; and scarcely any one of these is exactly adapted to the needs of the novice who knows little or nothing about the principles of the metrical art. The subject is treated casually and cursorily in many grammars and in many rhetorics; but the main purpose of these books is to help the student to express himself accu rately and satisfactorily in prose. Book Elements and Science of English Versification Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements and Science of English Versification Classic Reprint written by William C. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements and Science of English Versification It Is the desire of the author to create a greater love for poetry. I do not think it is possible to make great poets any more than it is possible to create great musicians, sculptors, artists, or orators. All must be born with the spark of genius inherent within the soul. I believe, however, that even those possessed of great genius may profit by the research of others, and frequently are induced to follow their art by suggestions and rules pointed out to them. To such who possess real genius from a poetic standpoint this work may be of benefit. Another class to be benefited are readers who love poetry and make a study of it, and yet fail to receive the benefits or see the beauties of true poetry simply because they fail to understand the technique. It is a pleasure to be able to scan critically that which we read. If, however, we are unable to criticise for ourselves the merits of a poem from every standpoint, we necessarily lose much of the real pleasure of the reading. To be able to tell the measure, the rhythm, and the number of feet a verse contains is in every sense a satisfaction to the reader of a poem; yet, not one-third of those who read poetry know anything whatever about measure, feet, or rhythm. They realize there is a certain jingle to the stanza that pleases them, and that is all they know about it. Book The Principles of English Metre

Download or read book The Principles of English Metre written by Egerton Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Metre Before plunging into the detailed work for this book I thought that a formula might be stated which would cover the whole range of modern English verse; but it was soon evident that no such simple formula was possible, that metrists have assumed a degree of homogeneity which is not actually found, that there was more complexity than their generalizations would lead one to expect, that there is an underlying law, but something at once less rigid and more comprehensive than any they had yet stated. Johnson's opinion that 'the essence of verse is regularity, and its ornament is variety' is often quoted with approval; but how is this combination effected? Does it mean now one, now the other; law and order prevailing in one part, Bolshevism asserting itself in another; that is to say, the verse sometimes rhythmical, sometimes not? This position I should be unwilling to accept, and I prefer to consider, with the poets themselves, that rhythm is an essential of poetry, and that the freedom is within the rhythmic law, not a violation of it. The most suggestive theorists, I found, were Patmore, Lanier, and Mr. Omond - for the work of the latter, in particular, I have the greatest admiration - but above all I have valued the dicta of poets themselves, and have quoted them freely. Book The Foreign Sources of Modern English Versification

Download or read book The Foreign Sources of Modern English Versification written by Charlton Miner Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foreign Sources of Modern English Versification: With Especial Reference to the So-Called Iambic Lines of and Syllables It was my original intention to offer a thesis on certain logical aspects of the theory of modern English verse, following lines suggested by Mayor's Chapters on English Metre and Bridges' Milton's Prosody. After considerable study, however, I found myself still in an embarassing uncertainty as to several of the most fundamental questions involved, and it was clear that a preliminary investigation of the historical origin of our verse-forms was indispensable. All the topics most intimately involved in this investigation have already provoked separate discussion, but there has never been any satisfactory coordination of results; and the lack of just this has led to many hasty inferences. The purpose of this paper is to trace the main line of descent of our modern versification, from the classical quantitative verse and the Old English accentual verse, through the various forms that were cultivated in mediaeval Latin, English and French. To carry such an investigation into all the topics usually treated under the head of versification, would of course be impracticable within the ordinary limits of a doctor's thesis. I have therefore limited myself as narrowly as possible to one topic, - the one that seemed to me most essential. Book The Measures of the Poets

Download or read book The Measures of the Poets written by M. A. Bayfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Measures of the Poets: A New System of English Prosody The purpose of this book is to assist both students and lovers of poetry in general towards such a complete enjoyment of the beauty and music of English verse as can only be attained through a clear comprehension of its metrical framework; that is to say, a knowledge of the measures in which it is composed and the scansional schemes on which these are based. If this end is to be achieved, it is unquestionable that we must have a system of prosody that is on the one hand sound in principle, and on the other not liable to break down when brought to the test of application. Incredible as it may seem, no complete system has yet been put forth, so far as I can discover, which fulfils either of these indispensable conditions. In his book, The Science of English Verse, published some forty years ago - a book which unfortunately I did not hear of until the present work was written - the American poet and musician Sidney Lanier advocated the trochaic base for our lyrics, but strangely enough retained the iambic base for blank verse. English books on the subject still continue to adopt the iambic base, even for lyrics, and accordingly the system put forth in these pages is, so far as the systems in vogue are concerned, altogether revolutionary.
