Book Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry Part C

Download or read book Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry Part C written by Sydney Leach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry, Part C focuses on the effects of intermolecular interactions that are transmitted between ligands and proteins and from protein to protein. This book discusses the density and volume change measurements; direct volume change; osmotic pressure; and small-angle X-ray scattering. The theory of particulate scattering; pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance; absorption of water by diamagnetic molecules; and use of least squares in data analysis are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the iteration process; optical rotatory dispersion and the main chain conformation of proteins; and basic relations for optically active molecules. Other topics include the circular dichroism, secondary structure of proteins, visible rotatory dispersion, and peptide cotton effects. This publication is intended for protein chemists, but is also useful to biologists, medical practitioners, and students researching on protein chemistry.

Book Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry Part B

Download or read book Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry Part B written by Sydney Leach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry, Part B deals with the theories and application of selected physical methods in protein chemistry evaluation. This book is divided into seven chapters that cover the ultracentrifugal analysis, light scattering, infrared (IR) methods, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis of protein properties. This text first describes the fundamental ideas and methodology of sedimentation analysis of ideal noninteracting solutes and the problems of nonideality and solute-solute interaction. This book then deals with the problems involved in the interpretation of viscometric data for evaluation of intrinsic viscosity of proteins. The following chapters examine the principles, measurement and analysis of spectra, and experimental techniques of light scattering, IR, and NMR spectroscopic methods. Discussions on coordination phenomena, identification of binding sites, and ion binding in the crystalline state and in protein solutions are included. The concluding chapter presents some examples of protein analysis using differential thermal analysis technique. This book is of great value to chemists, biologists, and researchers who have great appreciation of protein chemistry.

Book The Principles of PETROLOGY

    Book Details:
  • Author : G.W. Tyrrell
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401160260
  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book The Principles of PETROLOGY written by G.W. Tyrrell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N this book the task of summarising modern petrology I from the genetic standpoint has been attempted. The scale of the work is small as compared with the magni tude of its subject, but it is nevertheless believed that the field has been reasonably covered. In conformity with the genetic viewpoint petrology, as contrasted with petrography, has been emphasised throughout; and purely descriptive mineralogical and petrographical detail has been omitted. Every petrologist who reads this book will recognise the author's indebtedness to Dr. A. Harker and Dr. A. Holmes, among British workers; to Prof. R. A. Daly, Dr. H. S. Washington, and Dr. N. L. Bowen, among American petrologists; and to Prof. J. H. L. Vogt, Prof. V. M. Goldschmidt, Prof. A. Lacroix, and Prof. P. Niggli. among European investigators. The emphasis laid on modern views, and the relative poverty of references to the works of the older generation of petrologists, does not imply any disrespect of the latter. It is due to recognition of the desirability of affording the petrological student a newer and wider range of reading references than is usually supplied in this class of work; for refer ences tend to become stereotyped as well as text and illustrations. Furthermore it is believed that all that is good and living in the older work has been incorporated, consciously or unconsciously, in the newer.

Book Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry Part A

Download or read book Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry Part A written by Sydney Leach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Principles and Techniques of Protein Chemistry, Part A deals with the principles and application of selected physical methods in protein chemistry evaluation. This book is organized into nine chapters that cover microscopic, crystallographic, and electrophoretic techniques for protein conformational perturbations evaluation. This text first presents a general account of electron microscopy, its specimen preparation, optimum conditions for high resolution, measurement of electron micrographs, and illustrative examples of protein study. This book then examines the different types of maps from X-ray methods and the diffraction data from fibrous proteins. The subsequent chapters cover discussions on UV spectroscopy of proteins; luminescence properties of proteins and related compounds; and perturbation and flow methods for evaluation of proteins’ dynamic properties and rate constants. Other chapters deal with the evaluation of proteins’ dielectric properties using dielectric relaxation, electric birefringence, and dichroism techniques. The concluding chapters outline the theoretical and experimental advances of the electrophoretic and gel filtration methods for the study of protein structure and molecular weight. This book is of great value to chemists, biologists, and researchers who have great appreciation of protein chemistry.

Book A Cultural History of Physics

Download or read book A Cultural History of Physics written by Károly Simonyi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the physical sciences are a continuously evolving source of technology and of understanding about our world, they have become so specialized and rely on so much prerequisite knowledge that for many people today the divide between the sciences and the humanities seems even greater than it was when C. P. Snow delivered his famous 1959 lecture, "The Two Cultures." In A Cultural History of Physics, Hungarian scientist and educator Károly Simonyi succeeds in bridging this chasm by describing the experimental methods and theoretical interpretations that created scientific knowledge, from ancient times to the present day, within the cultural environment in which it was formed. Unlike any other work of its kind, Simonyi’s seminal opus explores the interplay of science and the humanities to convey the wonder and excitement of scientific development throughout the ages. These pages contain an abundance of excerpts from original resources, a wide array of clear and straightforward explanations, and an astonishing wealth of insight, revealing the historical progress of science and inviting readers into a dialogue with the great scientific minds that shaped our current understanding of physics. Beautifully illustrated, accurate in its scientific content and broad in its historical and cultural perspective, this book will be a valuable reference for scholars and an inspiration to aspiring scientists and humanists who believe that science is an integral part of our culture.
