In order, however, to economise space, I have had to omit reference to many appliances which have become obsolete from their antiquity, or by reason of their failure in practice. Although it is impossible within the limits of the book to furnish exhaustive descriptions on all points, yet the details of general colliery work have been fully described, on the ground that collieries are more often made remunerative by perfection in small matters, than by bold strokes of engineering. All modern collieries are practically identical so far as general machinery and arrangements are concerned; nevertheless, it frequently happens, in particular localities, that the adoption of a combination of small improvements any one of which viewed separately may be of apparently little value, turns an unprofitable concern into a paying one. At the end of each chapter will be found a carefully selected list of Memoirs in which fuller information can be sought. This will, it is hoped, prove a novel and useful feature in a treatise on coal-mining, for, scattered through the pages of the Transactions of the Mining Institutes, numerous valuable papers exist; but, owing to the lack of general indexes, they are unfortunately not consulted so much as they deserve to be. This state of affairs has been to a large extent remedied of recent years by the issue of several works of more moderate dimensions and price. Between the small elementary textbook and the still large and comparatively costly work of reference, however, there yet remains a considerable gap which it has been the Authors endeavour in this volume to fill. The best authorities have been freely consulted and, with due acknowledgment, laid under contribution; while the latest methods of working and the most modern machinery have been described, with the object of presenting an up-to-date account of the important industry under consideration. Since the publication of the excellent treatise by Jonathan Hyslop, thirty years ago, no text-book dealing to any extent with Scottish practice has, so far as the Author is aware, been published. As his experience has been gained largely in Scotland, he has attempted to remedy this omission, and it is to this that the occasional occurrence of a few Scotch words or phrases must be attributed, although these have been avoided, as far as possible when reference is made to methods prevailing elsewhere. Less attention has been paid to literary style and elegance than to the production of a thoroughly practical and plainly worded text-book, designed not only to aid those endeavouring to qualify themselves for positions as colliery managers and other responsible officials, but also as a daily guide and reference-book for all engaged in and about the Colliery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Practice in Mining Compressed air has proved itself in very many ways an exceedingly useful agent in coal and metalliferous mining; for transmitting energy into the working-face for drilling and cutting, and for tunnelling Operations, haulage, pumping, and other purposes. The introduction of electricity for mining threatened for a time to supersede compressed air, but experience has proved that electricity 18, under certain condi tions, a source of grave danger, so much so that stringent legislative restrictions have been found necessary. Compressed air, in regard to safety, convenience, and general suitability, has many advantages over electricity and other modes of transmitting power, and should in no wise suffer in comparisons of efficiency if more attention is given to the proper application of the system. Mining engineers in Britain and her colonies do not appear to have given the attention to this subject which it deserves, and possibly the absence of a textbook dealing with it may partly account for this. An endeavour is here made to supply this need, in the first place for students in mining schools and colleges, but it is also hoped the book may prove serviceable to those in practice. It is based upon lectures given to students, and whilst in the first chapter a knowledge of elemen tary mathematics is assumed, and in the second the calculus is used as far as thought necessary, the remainder is for the most part descriptive. A thorough understanding of the principles underlying the generation and use of compressed air in mining practice is most important, and to help students to test their knowledge numerous examples of fully worked out calculations are included In the book.
