Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 14: December 1919 So the product always reveals the source, if but we are able to read the marks upon it. The Pentateuch can be no exception, but most certainly bears the marks of its origin. The real internal evidence always does identify a document, if we are able to read the evidence aright. Wherever the Pentateuch came from, its provenance, whether naturalistic or revela tory, or both, or a development from within with an objective revelation added from with out, will certainly be stamped on its face. Made in the wilderness, made in Pales tine, made in Babylonia, or made in heaven will be marked upon it. The light that enables us to read aright these marks is the light from archaeology on Pentateuchal times. The purpose of these lectures is, by this light, to read these marks. The Christian believes, moreover, that the attitude of Christian love can be instilled in man only by the Christian Gospel, and that the Church is the primary agent for the propagation of the Gospel. Why is it, then, that the Church is so largely unsuccessful in its missionary function? Why is it regarded by so many men today as an out-moded institution and archaic cult? Why does the great majority of mankind, even in so - called Christian countries, repudiate the Gospel and deny its redemptive power? It is this aspect of our contemporary predicament, an aspect which the Church cannot ignore, that I should like to consider in some detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 32: Commencement Number; June, 1938 I. An emotional phase. When the terri ble strains of the war ended, multitudes sought relief by going direct to nature without God or moral control. A vivid sense of living was sought for in emo tional and sensational enjoyments. This led to a break with moral tradition, to an unrestricted exploration of forbidden paths, a savoring of prohibited pleasures, until today the world is cursed with a sick fatigue, a terrible satiety and boredom with life on a material plane. The back slider in heart is filled with his own ways. There is no pleasure in sin any more, since there are no new sins left. This sense of satiety turns sour and cynical, the years become stale, and many, overcome by its terrible futility, have little energy to seek remedies, and less desire to think about ways of moral recovery. I am not at all competent to advise you con cerning much of the work which falls to your lot in this highly technical and difficult branch of Theological instruction. Strange to say, this is the second time that I have been appointed to charge a Professor in the Old Testament Department - the accomplished Old Testament Scholar wit-h whom you have been most closely associated, and now yourself. I can only ac count for this double choice on the ground of close friendship. While I make no pretension whatever to knowledge entitling me to speak to you as a mentor, I do have certain convictions in this matter which I desire to voice, and which I beg you to consider. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 30: June, 1936 Let me recall for you the great minds which shaped this ideal of 125 years ago. The first suggestion of a Theological Seminary evidently came from Archibald Alexander, evangelist, pas tor, preacher, college president, theologian, a commanding figure in the councils of the Church, and he naturally became the first professor of the Seminary. President Timothy Dwight of Yale College, as a delegate to the Assembly of 1809 from the Congregational Association of Connecticut, took a prominent part in promot ing the new project. The chairman of the representative committee which formulated the Plan was Ashbel Green, President of the Col lege of New Jersey, and the Moderator who presided over the Assembly of 1811, which adopted the Plan, was Eliphalet Nott, who, apart from his unique name and outstanding abil ity as a scientist, teacher, preacher, and statesman, has the great distinction of having served as the President of Union College for sixty-two years. The Plan thus conceived, worked out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
