Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prime Minister, Vol. 3 of 3: An Historical Romance No sooner did the Minister receive intelli gence of these disturbances, than he despatche'd three regiments against the city. The inhabi tants yielded without striking a blow; but their submission availed them not; their city was given up to the unbounded license of the savage soldiery; and had it been taken by storm, scarcely could more frightful excesses have been committed. The soldiers were then distributed at free quarters on the inhabitants; the unfor tunate Judge of the People was dragged through the streets by the common hangman, with a halter round his neck, and then executed with every mark of ignominy. Eighteen of the princi lpal citizens shared his fate, and three hundred persons, who were accused of being concerned in the, sedition, were imprisoned, or condemned for life to the galleys. Kingstonyet, I am not, I confess, of the Puritano families, who have hitherto monopolised everything, but Carvalho is biassed by no such considerations; he is no friend to the Puritanos; he selects men for their merit alone, and some of that he may, I flatter myself, have discovered in me; at all events, I may boast he knew I would serve my country faithfully."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prime Minister, Vol. 1 of 3: An Historical Romance Having resolved to employ mg a prolonged residence in Portugal, in writing some work of fiction on that country, it struck me that the Times of the Marquis of Pombal would afford a good subject, untouched, as it is, by any other author. For a considerable time I delayed commencing my undertaking, almost in despair of finding the necessary materials. I wrote frequently to Lisbon to procure information, and mentioned my purpose to several Portuguese friends, who, at length. Book Fantasy Prime Minister Volume 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wondered what it takes to run a nation and be the Prime Minister? Except for billionaires and millionaires, every family or individual must budget for their daily existence. Our expenditures must be commensurate with our incomes. Wants are unlimited while resources are limited. Each family has their own priorities. Expenditures on food, clothing and accommodation consume most of a family’s income. Of whatever little remains, some want to spend on upgrading their capabilities/skills to enjoy a better tomorrow, while others want to spend on pomp and pleasure. It’s nobody’s business to pass comments on the conduct of any individual. However, when it comes to a family or a nation, the choices must be made in consideration of the overall benefits and priorities of its members. Budgeting, in a sense, reflects our priorities or strategies towards the pursuit of happiness. The question is whether we are equally capable of prioritizing and strategizing for the nation. Can we act in the interests of all stakeholders and be a trusty of national wealth? This book tries to explore the actions of a Prime Minister, keeping the India of 1947–64 in the backdrop.

Book Margaret Thatcher

Download or read book Margaret Thatcher written by Charles Moore and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not For Turning is the first volume of Charles Moore's authorized biography of Margaret Thatcher, the longest serving Prime Minister of the twentieth century and one of the most influential political figures of the postwar era. Charles Moore's biography of Margaret Thatcher, published after her death on 8 April 2013, immediately supercedes all earlier books written about her. At the moment when she becomes a historical figure, this book also makes her into a three dimensional one for the first time. It gives unparalleled insight into her early life and formation, especially through her extensive correspondence with her sister, which Moore is the first author to draw on. It recreates brilliantly the atmosphere of British politics as she was making her way, and takes her up to what was arguably the zenith of her power, victory in the Falklands. (This volume ends with the Falklands Dinner in Downing Street in November 1982.) Moore is clearly an admirer of his subject, but he does not shy away from criticising her or identifying weaknesses and mistakes where he feels it is justified. Based on unrestricted access to all Lady Thatcher's papers, unpublished interviews with her and all her major colleagues, this is the indispensable, fully rounded portrait of a towering figure of our times.

Book excerpt: Shrouded in government secrecy, clouded by myths and propaganda, the enigmatic tale of Nazi fugitives in the early Cold War has never been properly told—until now. In the aftermath of WWII, the victorious Allies vowed to hunt Nazi war criminals “to the ends of the earth.” Yet many slipped away to the four corners of the world or were shielded by the Western Allies in exchange for cooperation. Most prominently, Reinhard Gehlen, the founder of West Germany's foreign intelligence service, welcomed SS operatives into the fold. This shortsighted decision nearly brought his cherished service down, as the KGB found his Nazi operatives easy to turn, while judiciously exposing them to threaten the very legitimacy of the Bonn Government. However, Gehlen was hardly alone in the excessive importance he placed on the supposed capabilities of former Nazi agents; his American sponsors did much the same in the early years of the Cold War. Other Nazi fugitives became freelance arms traffickers, spies, and covert operators, playing a crucial role in the clandestine struggle between the superpowers. From posh German restaurants, smuggler-infested Yugoslav ports, Damascene safehouses, Egyptian country clubs, and fascist holdouts in Franco's Spain, Nazi spies created a chaotic network of influence and information. This network was tapped by both America and the USSR, as well as by the West German, French, and Israeli secret services. Indeed, just as Gehlen and his U.S sponsors attached excessive importance to Nazi agents, so too did almost all other state and non-state actors, adding a combustible ingredient to the Cold War covert struggle. Shrouded in government secrecy, clouded by myths and propaganda, the tangled and often paradoxical tale of these Nazi fugitives and operatives has never been properly told—until now.
