Book The Prime Minister The Classic Unabridged Edition

Download or read book The Prime Minister The Classic Unabridged Edition written by Anthony Trollope and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prime Minister is the fifth of the "Palliser" series of novels. When neither the Whigs nor the Tories are able to form a government on their own, a fragile compromise coalition government is formed, with Plantagenet Palliser, the wealthy and hard-working Duke of Omnium, installed as Prime Minister. The Duchess, formerly Lady Glencora Palliser, attempts to support her husband by hosting lavish parties at Gatherum Castle in Barsetshire, a family residence barely used until now. Palliser, initially unsure that he is fit to lead, then grows to enjoy the high office and finally becomes increasingly distressed when his government proves to be too weak and divided to accomplish anything. His own inflexible nature does not help ... Anthony Trollope (1815 - 1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of his best-loved works, collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote perceptive novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century. This carefully crafted ebook: "The Prime Minister (The Classic Unabridged Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Book Barchester Towers The Classic Unabridged Edition

Download or read book Barchester Towers The Classic Unabridged Edition written by Anthony Trollope and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barchester Towers is the second novel in Anthony Trollope's series known as the "Chronicles of Barsetshire". Among other things it satirises the then raging antipathy in the Church of England between High Church and Evangelical adherents. Barchester Towers concerns the leading clergy of the cathedral city of Barchester. The much loved bishop having died, all expectations are that his son, Archdeacon Grantly, will succeed him. Instead, owing to the passage of the power of patronage to a new Prime Minister, a newcomer, the far more Evangelical Bishop Proudie, gains the see. His wife, Mrs Proudie, exercises an undue influence over the new bishop, making herself as well as the bishop unpopular with most of the clergy of the diocese. Her interference to veto the reappointment of the universally popular Mr Septimus Harding (protagonist of Trollope's earlier novel, The Warden) as warden of Hiram's Hospital is not well received, even though she gives the position to a needy clergyman, Mr Quiverful, with 14 children to support.

Book ANNA KARENINA Two Unabridged Translations in One Premium Edition World Classics Series

Download or read book ANNA KARENINA Two Unabridged Translations in One Premium Edition World Classics Series written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 2122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "ANNA KARENINA – Two Unabridged Translations in One Premium Edition (World Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Anna Karenina is the story of a married aristocrat/socialite and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story opens when she arrives in the midst of a family broken up by her brother's unbridled womanizing—something that prefigures her own later situation, though she would experience less tolerance by others. A bachelor, Vronsky is eager to marry her if she will agree to leave her husband Karenin, a senior government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, the moral laws of the Russian Orthodox Church, her own insecurities, and Karenin's indecision. Although Vronsky and Anna go to Italy, where they can be together, they have trouble making friends. Back in Russia, she is shunned, becoming further isolated and anxious, while Vronsky pursues his social life... Widely considered a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first real novel and Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art".His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written". About the Maude translation: the translation by Aylmer Maude and Louise Shanks Maude is highly considered by scholars. This unabridged translation from the original Russian was originally published in 1918.The Maudes were classical translators of Leo Tolstoy who worked directly with the author and gained his personal endorsement. About the Garnett translation: Constance Garnett's translation of Anna Karenina is still among the best. Some scholars feel that her language is closer to the 19th-century sense of the original. Garnett translated seventy volumes of Russian prose for publication, including all of Dostoyevsky's novels.

Describing the many trials and eventual escape to freedom of the long-suffering, good-hearted slave Uncle Tom, it aimed to show how Christian love can overcome any human cruelty. Uncle Tom’s Cabin has remained controversial to this day, seen as either a vital milestone in the anti-slavery cause or as a patronising stereotype of African-Americans, yet it played a crucial role in the eventual abolition of slavery and remains one of the most important American novels ever written.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prime Ministers and Presidents Fortunate indeed were those Americans who were privileged during that conference to meet these foreign leaders. But those ministers so as sembled in Paris, far from home environment, their sense of authority cramped by the crowding of many others likewise in authority, were not, - could not be the personalities they are when in their own capitals they are conducting the government of their own countries. The time to see a machine is When it is installed and performing the service for which it was manufactured, not when it is on view in a World's Fair - not when it has its company man ners on, and it is occupying an exhibition space limited by the need for many similar spaces at the same fair. There is no manner of doubt that a Prime Minister or Minister for Foreign Affairs observed at some meeting in Paris, or in one of its numerous hotels crowded with other foreign guests, is a very different personality from the same man seated in his own Ministry with the emblems and atmosphere of dignity and power all about him. Some have passed beyond earshot of our criticism; but some remain, pale and ineffectual ghosts of former greatness, yet still touched by that human infirmity which prefers praise to blame. It will behove me to walk warily when I reach the present day; but, in dealing with figures which are already historical, one 's judgments may be com paratively untrammelled.
