Book excerpt: This book explores efforts by women to gain the right to sit on juries in the United States. After they won the vote, many organized women in the early twentieth century launched a new campaign to further expand their citizenship rights. The work here tells the story of how women in fifteen states pressured lawmakers to change the law so that women could take a place in the jury box. The history shows that the jury movements that tailored their tactics to the specific demands of the political and cultural context succeeded more rapidly in winning a change in jury law.

Download or read book Race in the Jury Box written by Hiroshi Fukurai and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race in the Jury Box focuses on the racially unrepresentative jury as one of the remaining barriers to racial equality and a recurring source of controversy in American life. Because members of minority groups remain underrepresented on juries, various communities have tried race-conscious jury selection, termed "affirmative jury selection." The authors argue that affirmative jury selection can insure fairness, verdict legitimization, and public confidence in the justice system. This book offers a critical analysis and systematic examination of possible applications of race-based jury selection, examining the public perception of these measures and their constitutionality. The authors make use of court cases, their own experiences as jury consultants, and jury research, as well as statistical surveys and analysis. The work concludes with the presentation of four strategies for affirmative jury selection.

It fills a void of easily accessible knowledge about how jury trials work and how jury research assists us to formulate new ways to improve the system. Current issues challenging the jury system, such as the impact that technology is having on jury trials, are discussed. Juries in the 21st Century is designed to inform jury practitioners (judges, barristers, instructing solicitors, and forensic experts) about what constitutes best practice for them. It details how other jurisdictions are dealing with issues within their jury systems and allows jury practitioners to understand which practices are based upon fact and which are based on habit, anecdote and other misconceptions. It encourages jury practitioners and law reformers to consider new approaches in order to improve jury communication. Teachers and researchers in law, psychology, criminology and sociology should find this cross-disciplinary book useful as it synthesises the current state of jury research. To curious members of the public who have or would like to serve on a jury, this book will provide you with insight into jury trials and jury room dynamics.
