This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete reprint of the sole edition. Includes the Adverse Report, and Hearings, Part 1 to 6. This set of hearing transcripts and the texts of supporting documents chronicles the history of Franklin D. Roosevelt's court-packing plan and its defeat in the United States Senate. Angered by the Court's hostility to legislation relating to the New Deal, Roosevelt proposed a bill to expand the membership of the court on February 5, 1937. Presented as a way to increase efficiency, it was intended to create seats for justices who would support the New Deal. The resulting struggle was a critical episode in Roosevelt's presidency and one of the nastiest clashes between the executive and judiciary in American history. Roosevelt's plan failed, but the debate had a profound effect on the Court's attitude toward the New Deal, which lead many to believe that the president was ultimately successful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The extraordinary nature of the Trump presidency has spawned a resurgence in the study of the presidency and a rising concern about the power of the office. In Power Shifts: Congress and Presidential Representation, John Dearborn explores the development of the idea of the representative presidency, that the president alone is elected by a national constituency, and thus the only part of government who can represent the nation against the parochial concerns of members of Congress, and its relationship to the growth of presidential power in the 20th century. Dearborn asks why Congress conceded so much power to the Chief Executive, with the support of particularly conservative members of the Supreme Court. He discusses the debates between Congress and the Executive and the arguments offered by politicians, scholars, and members of the judiciary about the role of the president in the American state. He asks why so many bought into the idea of the representative, and hence, strong presidency despite unpopular wars, failed foreign policies, and parochial actions that favor only the president's supporters. This is a book about the power of ideas in the development of the American state"--

Download or read book Roosevelt s Attempt to Alter the Composition of the Supreme Court written by Birgit Wilpers and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Ulster (Faculty of Arts - American Studies), course: America in the Depression 1929 - 1941, language: English, abstract: Franklin D. Roosevelt's attempt to change the composition of the American Supreme Court can be seen from different perspectives. Some historians depict the Supreme Court debacle as the beginning of the end of the New Deal, whereas "in later years, Roosevelt [himself], asserted that the court-packing fiasco was one in which he lost the battle but won the war [...]" (Coker, p. 114). In this essay, I will describe the situation which led to his proposal of reorganization, his further proceedings and the reactions to them. I will also analyze the results and the effects which it had on the New Deal during his continuing presidency.
