Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Manchester's epic and definitive account of President John F. Kennedy's assassination--now restored to print in a new paperback edition. As the world still reeled from the tragic and historic events of November 22, 1963, William Manchester set out, at the request of the Kennedy family, to create a detailed, authoritative record of the days immediately preceding and following President John F. Kennedy's death. Through hundreds of interviews, abundant travel and firsthand observation, and with unique access to the proceedings of the Warren Commission, Manchester conducted an exhaustive historical investigation, accumulating forty-five volumes of documents, exhibits, and transcribed tapes. His ultimate objective -- to set down as a whole the national and personal tragedy that was JFK's assassination -- is brilliantly achieved in this galvanizing narrative, a book universally acclaimed as a landmark work of modern history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 1998 report of the panel formed as a result of the 1992 President John F. Kennedy Records Collection Act. "The Review Board has worked hard to obtain all records relating to the assassination of President Kennedy and to release the records to the fullest extent possible to the American people. The Board and its staff have contributed significant professional and personal time to this important effort. We have done so in the hope that release of these records will shed new evidentiary light on the assassination of President Kennedy, enrich the historical understanding of that tragic moment in American history, and help restore public confidence in the government's handling of the assassination and its aftermath. The Review Board's Final Report is unanimous. It summarizes the Board's experience in interpreting and applying this unique way to provide broad access to government records. Most importantly, it illuminates the Review Board's legacy--the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection at the National Archives."Contents: Chapter 1: The Problem of Secrecy and the Solution of the JFK Act * Chapter 2: Establishment of the Review Board and Definition of "Assassination Record" * Chapter 3: Public Activities of the Assassination Records Review Board * Chapter 4: Developing the Review Process * Chapter 5: The Standards for Review: Review Board "Common Law" * Chapter 6, Part I: The Quest for Additional Information and Records in Federal Government Offices * Chapter 6, Part II: Clarifying the Federal Record on the Zapruder Film and the Medical and Ballistics Evidence * Chapter 7: Pursuit of Records and Information from Non-Federal Sources * Chapter 8: Compliance with JFK Act by Government Offices

Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992: Hearing Before the Legislation and National Security Subcommittee of the Committee on Government Operations House of Representatives, One Hundred Third Congress, First Session, November 17, 1993 The subcommittee met, pursuant to notice, at 10 a.m., in room 2154, Raybum House Office Building, Hon. John Conyers, Jr. (chairman of the subcommittee) presiding. Members present: Representatives John Conyers, Jr., Glenn English, and Al McCandless. Also present: Representative Louis Stokes. Subcommittee staff present: James C.Turner, staff director; Bennie B.Williams, clerk; and Monty Tripp, minority professional staff. Opening Statement Of Chairman Conyers Mr. Conyers. Good morning. The Legislation and National Security Subcommittee will come to order. We are meeting today to review the implementation of Public Law 102-526, the Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, a law which originated in this committee. Last year the subcommittee held three separate hearings on this legislation and worked closely with the Senate and the administration to shape the final Records Act. The assassination of President Kennedy was a tragedy that touched everyone, and continues to be felt even as we near the 30th anniversary of that event. He was a unique leader who brought humanity and vision to American policy, both at home and abroad. The tragic loss of the President was compounded by lingering suspicion that the government was not entirely forthcoming about the assassination. Indeed, the 1964 Warren Commission conclusion that Oswald, acting alone, was responsible for the death of President Kennedy has been in question since the first day that it was made public. And today, many Americans feel that something is being concealed in the secret files of their government. That is why members in this committee joined together in passing the Records Act, which requires prompt public disclosure of all materials relating to the assassination of President Kennedy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neither a random event nor the act of a lone madman—the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was an appalling and grisly conspiracy. This is the unvarnished story. With deft investigative skill, David Kaiser shows that the events of November 22, 1963, cannot be understood without fully grasping the two larger stories of which they were a part: the U.S. government’s campaign against organized crime, which began in the late 1950s and accelerated dramatically under Robert Kennedy; and the furtive quest of two administrations—along with a cadre of private interest groups—to eliminate Fidel Castro. The seeds of conspiracy go back to the Eisenhower administration, which recruited top mobsters in a series of plots to assassinate the Cuban leader. The CIA created a secretive environment in which illicit networks were allowed to expand in dangerous directions. The agency’s links with the Mafia continued in the Kennedy administration, although the President and his closest advisors—engaged in their own efforts to overthrow Castro—thought this skullduggery had ended. Meanwhile, Cuban exiles, right-wing businessmen, and hard-line anti-Communists established ties with virtually anyone deemed capable of taking out the Cuban premier. Inevitably those ties included the mob. The conspiracy to kill JFK took shape in response to Robert Kennedy’s relentless attacks on organized crime—legal vendettas that often went well beyond the normal practices of law enforcement. Pushed to the wall, mob leaders merely had to look to the networks already in place for a solution. They found it in Lee Harvey Oswald—the ideal character to enact their desperate revenge against the Kennedys. Comprehensive, detailed, and informed by original sources, The Road to Dallas adds surprising new material to every aspect of the case. It brings to light the complete, frequently shocking, story of the JFK assassination and its aftermath.
