Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Presentable Art of Reading Absence takes as impulse the act of meditation, in which the energetic relationship between a meditative body and its universe is not only the envisioning of absence by presence but also vision itself: "Here begins the revelation of a kiosk." With occult emotionality and analytic brilliance, Jay Wright has written the user's guide to evanescence: "I have become attuned / to the disappearance of all things / and of my self . . ."

Book Pitch and Revelation

Download or read book Pitch and Revelation written by Will Daddario and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pitch and Revelation is the first book-length study of the poetry, prose, and dramatic literature of the African American poet Jay Wright (1934-). The authors premise their reading on joy as a foundational philosophical concept. In this, they follow Spinoza, who understood joy as that affect necessary for the construction of an intellectual love of God, leading into the infinite univocity of everything. Similarly, with Wright, joy leads to a visceral sense of what the authors call the great weave of the world. This weave is akin to the notion of entanglement made popular by physicists and contemporary scholars of Science Studies, such as Karen Barad, which speaks of the always ongoing, mutually constitutive connections of all matter and intellectual processes. By exhibiting and detailing the joy of reading Wright, Pitch and Revelation intends to help others chart their own paths into the intellectual, musical, and rhythmical territories of Wright's world so as to more fully experience joy in the world generally. Although the exhibitions of meaning making presented are instructive, they do not follow the "do as I do" or "do as I say" model of instructional texts. Instead, they invite the reader to "do along with us" as the authors make meaning from selections across Wright's erudite, dense, rhythmically fascinating, endlessly lyrical, highly structured, and seemingly hermetic body of work."--publisher's website.

  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book The Truth about Marie written by Jean-Philippe Toussaint and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving through a variety of locales and adventures, The Truth about Marie revisits the unnamed narrator of Toussaint’s acclaimed Running Away, reporting on his now disintegrated relationship with the titular Marie—the story switching deftly between first- and third-person as the narrator continues to drift through life, and Marie does her best to get on with hers. Like all of Toussaint’s novels, The Truth about Marie’s plot matters far less than its pace and tempo, its chain of images, its sequence of events. From pouring rain in Paris to blazing fires on the island of Elba, from moments of intense action to perfectly paced lulls, The Truth about Marie relies on a series of contrasts to tell a beguiling, and finally touching, story of intimacy forever being regained and lost.

Download or read book Dust written by Arkadiĭ Dragomoshchenko and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arkadii Dragomoshchenko, Russia's leading founder of Language poetry, in his new collection of essays fuses seemingly disparate elements of poetry, philosophy, journalism, and prose in an attempt to capture the workings of memory. At stake is not what he writes about--whether memory, Gertrude Stein, immortality, or a walk on Nevsky Prospect--but how he writes it. Formally, Dragomoshchenko never tires of digression, creating playful games of patience and anticipation for his reader. In so doing, he pushes story and closure into the background--arriving, finally, but not to a destination. Ultimately, Dragomoshchenko "carefully seeks out the dust of traces from the period of oblivion," which evidently lead to the oblivion of minds.

Book What We Were Doing and where We Were Going

Download or read book What We Were Doing and where We Were Going written by Damion Searls and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen years after the publication of the first volume of Jacques Roubaud's epic and moving "The Great Fire of London," Dalkey Archive Press is proud to publish the first English translation of The Loop, the second novel in Roubaud's Proustian series, which has in its capacity to astonish been compared to the compositions of Messiaen and the buildings of Antonio Gaudi. Devastated after the death of his young wife, Alix, the author conceives of a project that will allow him not only to continue writing, but continue living--writing a book that leads him to confront his terrible loss as well as examine the lonely world in which he now seems, more and more, to exist: that of Memory. The Loop finds Roubaud returning to his earliest recollections, as well as considering the nature of memory itself, and the process--both merciful and terrible--of forgetting. Neither memoir nor novel, by turns playful and despairing, The Loop is a masterpiece of contemporary prose.

Her work—often based upon her own personal experiences, and showing keen insight into divisive social issues from the Korean partition to the position of women in Korean society—has touched readers for over forty years. In this collection, meditations upon life in old age come to the fore—at its best, accompanied by great beauty and compassion; at its worst by a cynicism that nonetheless turns a bitter smile upon the changing world.

Book Warrenpoint

Download or read book Warrenpoint written by Denis Donoghue and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novelistic “family romance” from a key figure in contemporary literature, focusing with lyrical detail on his coming of age in Northern Ireland. Warrenpoint is a memoir, and more than a memoir: with moments of novelistic narrative and lyricism wedded to musings on the aesthetic and theological themes of the author’s coming of age—filial piety, original sin, a child’s perceptions, and then the nature of terrorism, and of reading itself—it demonstrates the same insight and lucidity that have contributed to Denis Donoghue’s fame as one of our most important critics. Taking its title from the seaside town in Northern Ireland whose police barracks served as the residence for the Catholic Donoghues, it has been described as a family romance, dealing not only with the author’s love for his strong-willed, taciturn, policeman father, but his love for literature and how it shaped his life to come.

Her mother’s side goes back even further, to the only family that Jewish history has ignored: the ones who said “No” to Moses and stayed in Egypt. After migrating to Israel in the 1950s and settling on a kibbutz—from which they were soon expelled for Stalinism—this storied clan moved to Tel Aviv. In this unconventional family saga, Orly Castel-Bloom blends fact with fiction, history with legend, reimagining the lives of her forebears in unforgettable prose.
