Book Father of Faith Missions

Download or read book Father of Faith Missions written by Robert Bernard Dann and published by Paternoster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modest and unobtrusive, Anthony Norris Groves did not consider himself a gifted evangelist. His name is not usually mentioned alongside William Carey and Hudson Taylor, but Groves had a pioneering influence that went beyond his personal reach. He and his family followed God's call to Baghdad and India, leaving their comfortable English lives behind. Though he doubted his success as a missionary, Groves' character and ideas shaped the people who followed him as he followed Christ. Exhaustively researched, Father of Faith Missions is not merely about the life of one missionary but also a record of Groves influence on missionary initiatives and the Brethren movement. Drawing upon Groves own journals and letters in addition to copious scholarship, this book is both a journey into history and a reminder that God's faithfulness is as true now as it was then.

Download or read book Anthony Norris Groves Saint and Pioneer A Combined Study of a Man of God and of the Principles and Practices of the Brethren written by G. H. Lang and published by . This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although his name is little known in Christian cirlces today, Anthony Norris Groves (1795-1853) was, according to the writer of this book, one of the most influential men of the nineteenth century. He was what might be termed a spiritual pioneer, forging a path through unfamiliar territory in order that others might follow. One of those who followed him was George Muller, known to the world as one who in his lifetime cared for over ten thousand orphans without any appeal for human aid, instead trusting God alone to provide for the daily needs of this large enterprise. In 1825 Groves wrote a booklet called Christian Devotedness in which he encouraged fellow believers and especially Christian workers to take literally Jesus' command not to lay up treasures on earth, but rather to give away their savings and possessions toward the spread of the gospel and to embark on a life of faith in God alone for the necessaries of life. Groves himself took this step of faith: he gave away his fortune, left his lucrative dental practice in England, and went to Baghdad to establish the first Protestant mission to Arabic-speaking Muslims. His going was not in connection with any church denomination or missionary society, as he sought to rely on God alone for needed finances. He later went to India also. His approach to missions was to simplify the task of churches and missions by returning to the methods of Christ and His apostles, and to help indigenous converts form their own churches without dependence on foreign support. His ideas were considered radical at the time but later became widely accepted in evangelical circles. Groves was a leading figure in the early days of what Robert Govett would later call the mightiest movement of the Spirit of God since Pentecost-a movement that became known simply as the Brethren. In this book G. H. Lang combines a study of the life and influence of Anthony Norris Groves with a survey of the original principles and practices of the Brethren movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was one of the most popular lay preachers and Christian apologists at the turn of the 20th century: Sir Robert Anderson devoutly believed that the Bible was the inerrant word of God, and in this popular work, he reinterprets the Old Testament Book of Hebrews for modern believers. Starting from the supposition that appreciation of God as the originator of the Judaism is vital to a true understanding of Christianity, Anderson defends and explains the Book of Hebrews as important to those who wish to have the full power of the Bible-and of faith in God-at their disposal for spiritual comfort. While at Scotland Yard, Irish police official and religious scholar SIR ROBERT ANDERSON (1841-1918) helped investigate the Jack the Ripper murders, but he is best remembered for his works of Bible study, including The Coming Prince, Daniel in the Critics' Den, and The Silence of God.
