Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England HE revival of our ancient parochial church architecture is a subject which occupies much attention at the present time; after three centuries of demolition and neglect, the solemn structures raised by our Catholic ancestors are being gradually restored to somewhat of their original appearance, and buildings which but a few years since were considered as unsightly and barbarous erections of ignorant times, are now become the theme for general eulogy, and models for imita tion. To the English Catholic there is no class of religious edifices of greater interest than the ancient parish churches of this country. The are admirably suited to the present wants and necessities of the Church, nor is it possible to adopt, con sistently, any other models for the greater portion of our ecclesiastical buildings. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1850 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter 33. In this chapter we propose to explain the general form and arrangement of ancient churches and their furniture, which as before mentioned, is of far greater importance than mere detail: for of what use is good writing if the spelling be bad? or of what use is good spelling if the words have no sense in them? So a knowledge of detail in Architecture is of little worth, if the greater principles of combination be not thoroughly understood. The sin of modern Church Architecture in England until these last few years has not been in the badness of detail, for it has oft times been most pure, yet the building where it is found has been most wretched. It has consisted in the misapplication of those details; sometimes by copying them on too small a scale, thereby rendering them absurd, as. the building churches for dolls or cathedrals for babies: sometimes by misplacing them, as in putting windows well suited for a flank elevation in a western front, or a cathedral doorway in a village porch, and vice versa. When we consider what Architecture really is; that it implies not only the art of building well, but building beautifully and appropriately, we shall soon see that something beyond a mere correctness of detail is necessary to produce a perfect building. When we look abroad on the world and trace the hand of God in the vegetable, animal or mineral kingdom, it is not the beauty of form alone which the most enchants us;--it is not alone the peculiar suitability of each portion to do its particular work that engages our admiration; but it is the combination of utility with beauty which impresses us with wonder and awe, and which tells us in language not to be mistaken, " The hand that made us is divine." In creation beauty appears...

Book Recent English Ecclesiastical Architecture

Download or read book Recent English Ecclesiastical Architecture written by Charles Archibald Nicholson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent English Ecclesiastical Architecture In compiling a publication such as this one. dealing with English Ecclesiastical Architecture, the term "recent" has been found, of necessity, to have a somewhat elastic meaning. The history of architecture, though there be chronological sequence, is not defined into periods by dates. Growth is gradual, and the development of a style, or the change from one manner of building to another, can only be determined in a very broad way. In civic work there has undoubtedly been a general adoption of Renaissance types - in some instances almost a duplication of seventeenth and eighteenth-century forms. But this has not been the case to any extent in church work, which remains for the most part Gothic in character. At the present day there arc no such dominating personalities as those which brought about the Gothic Revival of the mid-nineteenth century, and, of course, the work of these men - Pugin, Street, Butterfield, Burges, and the rest - it much too far back to be included in the present volume. It has been felt, however, that there should be some sort of connection between the church architecture of to-day and that of the period front which it derive? much of its inspiration, and, with this intention, two of John Sedding's most characteristic churches - St. Clement's, Bournemouth, and Holy Trinity, Chelsea - have been taken as, in some sense, a starting point. A further connecting link is supplied by the magnificent talent of J. F. Bentley, while the late Mr. Gamer and the late Mr. Bodley give the lead to the best men of the present-day school of church architects. The selection here presented is a varied and representative one, embracing Established, Nonconformist, and Roman Catholic churches, and it is felt that the publication of so fine a series of examples should be of great interest and value to everyone interested in Modern Ecclesiastical Architecture.
