Book The Present State and Condition of the Free People of Color of the City of Philadelphia

Download or read book The Present State and Condition of the Free People of Color of the City of Philadelphia written by Pennsylvania Society for Promot Slavery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present State and Condition of the Free People of Color, of the City of Philadelphia: And Adjoining Districts, as Exhibited by the Report of Committee of Thepennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, &C As the agents were confined in their visits to the houses of the colored population, the above number of individuals is in dependent of those who may be at service in white families, which may account, to those who refer to the census of 1830, for an apparent decrease; that census allotting to those dis tricts colored persons. The Committee, feeling some anxiety to test the accuracy of the numbers reported by the agents, resorted to the following reasoning and calculations on the subject, which to them appear satisfactory and conclusive. Hythe United States census of1820, it is stated, that there were in the city and liberties of Philadelphia colored per sons, of whom were then ascertained (by an active member of this Society, since deceased) to be inmates of colored families, and residing in other families. The increase of colored persons in this city and districts, between 1820 and 1830, was, according to the last census, about 37 per cent.; at the same ratio, the increase since 1830, for the eight years, would be about 30 per cent., making a total aug mentation at the present time of 67 per cent., which will give the total number of persons in colored families being but 823 persons less than that ascertained by the agents - a diflerence so small, under the circumstances, as to afford to the Committee strong evidence of the accuracy of their report. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been written about elite Philadelphians, only in recent decades have historians paid attention to the Jews and working-class blacks, the immigrant Irish, Italians, and Poles who settled in the city and gave such sections as Moyamensing, Southwark, South Philadelphia, and Kensington their vitality. In this classic of social and ethnic history, the authors draw on census schedules, court records, city directories, and tax records as well as newspaper files and other sources to give a picture of the ways in which these less-privileged groups of Philadelphians lived. What emerges is a picture of Philadelphia radically different from the conventional portrait of a staid old city.

Book The Elite of Our People Joseph Willson s Sketches of Black Upper Class Life in Antebellum Philadelphia

Download or read book The Elite of Our People Joseph Willson s Sketches of Black Upper Class Life in Antebellum Philadelphia written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sketches of the Higher Classes of Colored Society in Philadelphia, first published in 1841, was written by Joseph Willson, a southern black man who had moved to Philadelphia. He wrote this book to convince whites that the African-American community in his adopted city did indeed have a class structure, and he offers advice to his black readers about how they should use their privileged status. The significance of Willson's account lies in its sophisticated analysis of the issues of class and race in Philadelphia. It is all the more important in that it predates W. E. B. Du Bois's The Philadelphia Negro by more than half a century. Julie Winch has written a substantial introduction and prepared extensive annotation. She identifies the people Willson wrote about and gives readers a sense of Philadelphia's multifaceted and richly textured African American community. The Elite of Our People will interest urban, antebellum, and African-American historians, as well as individuals with a general interest in African-American history. This volume has withstood the test of time. It remains readable. Joseph Willson was well read, articulate, and had a keen eye for detail. His message is as timely today as it was in 1841. The people he wrote about were remarkable individuals whose lives were as complex as his own.

Book excerpt: This “superbly researched and engaging” (The Wall Street Journal) true story about five boys who were kidnapped in the North and smuggled into slavery in the Deep South—and their daring attempt to escape and bring their captors to justice belongs “alongside the work of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edward P. Jones, and Toni Morrison” (Jane Kamensky, Professor of American History at Harvard University). Philadelphia, 1825: five young, free black boys fall into the clutches of the most fearsome gang of kidnappers and slavers in the United States. Lured onto a small ship with the promise of food and pay, they are instead met with blindfolds, ropes, and knives. Over four long months, their kidnappers drive them overland into the Cotton Kingdom to be sold as slaves. Determined to resist, the boys form a tight brotherhood as they struggle to free themselves and find their way home. Their ordeal—an odyssey that takes them from the Philadelphia waterfront to the marshes of Mississippi and then onward still—shines a glaring spotlight on the Reverse Underground Railroad, a black market network of human traffickers and slave traders who stole away thousands of legally free African Americans from their families in order to fuel slavery’s rapid expansion in the decades before the Civil War. “Rigorously researched, heartfelt, and dramatically concise, Bell’s investigation illuminates the role slavery played in the systemic inequalities that still confront Black Americans” (Booklist).
