Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Lighting There are few engineering activities which have advanced more rapidly during the last few years than have the, art and practice Of electric lighting. Illuminants have been steadily improved and refined. New types Of lamps have been developed giving better colors Of light, more efficient light production, cheaper units and a greater range Of sizes. Principles Of illumination have been studied and applied in the better solution Of lighting problems. Indirect lighting, semi or complete, has introduced great possibilities into the handling Of both small and large installations. The economic value Of good lighting is better appreciated. Color is beginning to play an important part in lighting schemes. It is destined to become even more widely utilized. Book Electric Lighting for the Inexperienced Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electric Lighting for the Inexperienced Classic Reprint written by Hubert Walter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Lighting for the Inexperienced The result of leaving these little details to the man is familiar enough. For one well lighted' house one finds a dozen in which the wiring is badly planned, the switches thought lessly arranged, the fittings wrongly placed, the lamps unsuitable, the shades ugly. There is no excuse nowadays for this state of things. Electric light in the house is no longer a new-fangled and inscrutable toy. Yet the householder, as a rule, still lacks that little knowledge of the things to look out for which would enable him to interpret a specification, avoid the more obvious of the common mistakes, and get for his money the most advantageous return. The aim of this book is to help him. Even the reader who is already a consumer will, it is believed, find a good deal in these pages that he did not know before. He may agreeably employ his leisure in discovering what parts, if any, of his own installation are beyond the reach of criticism. Book Electric Lighting

Download or read book Electric Lighting written by Hippolyte Fontaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Lighting: A Practical Treatise The electric light may be utilised in two ways, either by powerful foci illuminating or visible at great distances, or by less intense foci giving a light suitable to all kinds of night work. In the first case, nothing can equal the services rendered by electricity; in the second case, there is no longer com parison, the advantage being sometimes in favour of gas, oil, petroleum, &c., sometimes in favour of electricity. Thus for lighthouse service, fortifications, maritime service, shores, armies in campaign, the electric light is superior to all others; for show-rooms and manufactories, for open-air yards and large workshops, it is equally suitable; for domestic house hold illumination, and for certain trades carried on under low roofs, where there are numerous local subdivisions, gas, oil, or petroleum is preferable. In many establishments lighted by gas it has been advantageous to substitute electricity. In any case the number of applications would be very limited if we should continue to deprive ourselves of light, as it is the custom to do in the majority of manufactures, where during the night superintend ence is impossible, where the work produced during the night is much less than in the day. But, we hasten to add, this statu qua is not to be feared; some intelligent manufacturers - and their number is great - will replace their present system Of lighting by a system of lighting four or five times more intense, and they will not hesitate to admit that their products are better, in larger quantities, and consequently more economical; this example will not be lost, and to sustain competition their fellow-manufacturers will imitate them. There are reasons for the rapidity of the advance, and a glance at the history of the science will Show how it was that electricity suddenly appeared in the commercial world after having passed centuries in the grub-stage in the labora tories of philosophers.
