There was not a museum in Europe that possessed a specimen of Assyrian work manship, or anything whatever representative of a style of civil ization, the last vestige of which was supposed to have perished from the earth. Now every great museum has its Assyrian de partment and the monumental remains of Assyria have be come as familiar as those of any nation of antiquity. The life and manners of its people are exhibited in scenes faithfully por trayed by themselves. The degree of their advancement in the arts, both useful and ornamental, is shown in their structures and in articles of their handiwork. Their very language has been, to some extent, recovered and whole volumes of inscrip tions have been found which have been already, with a good measure of success, deciphered. These are leading the way to a recovery of their science, religion and history from the almost total oblivion which heretofore oppressed them. The historian and the antiquary are eagerly availing themselves of these discoveries and laboring to construct, as far as this may prove possible, a true conception of this ancient empire. And students of the Bible are busy in gathering up that which may tend to its illustration or defence. So that here again Assyria is in a new and unanticipated manner serving with Egypt. These great op pressors, which in their prosperity and power seemed to threaten the continued existence of God's earthly kingdom, are now by their monuments singularly helpful and auxiliary to that king dom. He who used the Assyrian as the rod of his anger, now. Summons him from the dust of centuries as a witness to his truth. In what we here say of the Assyrian monuments we cannot, of Course, attempt to treat of the entire subject of them relation to the Bible. The field is too broad to be explored, even super ficially, in a single article. We must, accordingly, pass by the graphic delineations upon the walls of their palaces, much as they offer that is inviting. I could cite quite a list, beginning with Fichte, Schelling and Hegel, down to Herbert Spencer, Kuno Fischer, of Heidelberg, and Paul Deussen, of Kiel, and could profess to give outlines of their several phases of Monism from histories of philosophy. But my object is to in struct students who are guided by common sense and their Bibles in the central doctrines of this pretended philosophy which are common to all its phases, and to expose their common errors. Another is his as sertion of moral irresponsibility for Opinions even upon ethical subjects. This he claims for himself, and of course for everybody else, as the only adequate basis for freedom of thought, which we all regard as an inalienable right. A third ground is his total de nial of all punitive aspect and quality in the evil consequences Of free human actions. He absolutely denies the element of re wards and punishments in the experienced course of human exist ence. He says that the evils which follow the mistakes of our free agency are nothing but natural consequences, following from the natural laws of the universe, which are necessary and invaria ble; so that these experiences give no evidence whatever 'of a moral providence over men. His fourth and chief ground is the old cavil, how God, if there were a God, could even permissively ordain natural and moral evil in his kingdom.
