Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Calvinistic Methodism: A Historical Sketch of the Presbyterian Church of Wales Has the Principality of Wales been really benefited by the Methodist Reformation of the last century? This is a question which has, of late, been much canvassed, and to which some have given a negative answer. It has been the means of multiplying places of worship, and of enormously swelling Nonconformist congregations, but it has been asserted that it has caused little or no improvement in the morals of the people, and that they were as contented, peaceful, and pure, or very nearly so, before "all the sects" had swollen to their present proportions, and when they had scarcely any religious instruction, but such as was furnished by the "Clergy of their own Church," as their descendants are in the present generation. Statements to this effect are made by men of some weight, and repeated on their authority by more humble individuals. It is to meet such assertions that I have prefixed to the present edition of my historical sketch a chapter on the moral and religious state of the Principality during the last hundred years or so before the rise of Methodism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elect Methodists is the first full-length academic study of Calvinistic Methodism, a movement that emerged in the eighteenth century as an alternative to the better known Wesleyan grouping. While the branch of Methodism led by John Wesley has received significant historical attention, Calvinistic Methodism, especially in England, has not. The book charts the sources of the eighteenth-century Methodist revival in the context of Protestant evangelicalism emerging in continental Europe and colonial North America, and then proceeds to follow the fortunes in both England and Wales of the Calvinistic branch, to the establishing of formal denominations in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Book The Calvinistic Methodist Fathers of Wales

Download or read book The Calvinistic Methodist Fathers of Wales written by John Morgan Jones and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the French novelist Anatole France who, when feeling tired, and discouraged, said, 'I never go into the country for a change of air and a holiday. I always go instead into the eighteenth century.' For an entirely different purpose, the great Welsh preacher, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, frequently borrowed France's words when speaking to his fellow Gospel preachers: 'Go to the eighteenth century! In other words read the stories of the great tides and movements of the Spirit experienced in that century. It is the most exhilarating experience, the finest tonic you will ever know. For a preacher it is absolutely invaluable ... There is nothing more important for preaching than the reading of Church history and biographies.' His own biographer, Iain Murray, says that for 'sheer stimulus and enjoyment there were no volumes which he prized more than Tadau Methodistaidd... the lives of the fathers of Welsh Calvinistic Methodism. They were constantly in his hands.' Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To possess “the light of life,” one must put faith in Jesus Christ and become his follower. On social media every day, millions of Christians are saying such things as “I am a Calvinist,” “I am an Arminian.” “I am a Lutheran,” “I am a Wesleyan,” and so on. They then debate and argue theology as though it is a blood sport. This author is not an Arminian, Calvinist, Wesleyan, Lutheran, Baptist, follower, disciple, or learner of any other denomination; Andrews is non-denominational. THE BIBLE'S ANSWER: EPHESIANS 1:4: Are Some Chosen (Predestined) to Eternal Salvation, and Others to Eternal Condemnation? What the Bible Authors Really Meant by Atonement What the Bible Authors Really Meant by Ransom What the Bible Authors Really Meant by Reconciliation What the Bible Authors Really Meant by Sanctification What the Bible Authors Really Meant By Salvation Is the Five Points of Calvinism Biblical Determinism, Fatalism, Predestination, and Foreknowledge Arminian View of the Free Will/Calvin’s Predestination Is the Foreknowledge of God Compatible with Free Will? TRUE CHRISTIANS—Are Not followers of Men Are some chosen (predestined) to eternal salvation and others to eternal condemnation? Andrews will have entire chapters dealing with this important issue and inform the reader from the Calvinist and Arminian perspectives. In the end, he will answer the following questions. Is Total Depravity Biblical? Is Unconditional Election Biblical? Is Limited Atonement Biblical? Is Irresistible Grace Biblical? Is Perseverance of the Saints Biblical?

Book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church

Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church written by Frank Leslie Cross and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 1842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable one-volume reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,000 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, including theology, churches and denominations, patristic scholarship, the bible, the church calendar and its organization, popes, archbishops, saints, and mystics. In this revision, innumerable small changes have been made to take into account shifts in scholarly opinion, recent developments, such as the Church of England's new prayer book (Common Worship), RC canonizations, ecumenical advances and mergers, and, where possible, statistics. A number of existing articles have been rewritten to reflect new evidence or understanding, for example the Holy Sepulchre entry, and there are a few new articles. Perhaps most significantly, a great number of the bibliographies have been updated. Established since its first appearance in 1957 as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, ODCC is an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.
