Book Engineering Development of Fluid bed Fluoride Volatility Processes

Download or read book Engineering Development of Fluid bed Fluoride Volatility Processes written by Irving E. Knudsen and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fluid-bed process for the preparation of dense, spheroidal uranium dioxide particles directly from uranium hexafluoride for dispersion and compacted fuel element applications has been developed. In the process, a uranium hexafluoride is reacted with mixtures of steam and hydrogen in a bed of uranium dioxide fluidized by the reactant gases and maintained at 650 to 700 degrees C. The solid reaction products deposit as a dense layer on the surface of the bed particles. The operating procedure involves alternating periods of uranium hexafluoride feed periods of fluoride cleanup when only steam and hydrogen are fed. Product is withdrawn at the end of each cleanup period.

Book Laboratory Investigations in Support of Fluid Bed Fluoride Volatility Processes

Download or read book Laboratory Investigations in Support of Fluid Bed Fluoride Volatility Processes written by L. Trevorrow and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were carried out to determine the extent and rate of separation of mixtures of uranium hexafluoride and plutonium hexafluoride by selective thermal decomposition. Gaseous mixtures of uranium hexafluoride, plutonium hexafluoride, and helium were circulated for varying lengths of time through nickel vessels packed with nickel wool at temperatures of 150, 200, and 300 deg C. The initial ratios of uranium hexafluoride to plutonium hexafluoride in the mixtures were of the order of 10 to 1. The gas phase was analyzed for uranium and plutonium before and after circulation. The amounts of uranium and plutonium in the solid compounds deposited in the vessels were also determined. Passage of the mixtures through the hot vessels resulted in the removal of 99.5 to 99.9% of the plutonium. The solid product remaining in the vessels was plutonium tetrafluoride containing 0.09 to 1.3% uranium. The separation of plutonium hexafluoride from uranium hexafluoride by selective thermal decomposition is applicable to fluid bed fluoride volatility processes for the recovery of fissile material from reactor fuels.

Book Fluid Bed Conversion of Uranium Tetrafluoride to Uranium Hexafluoride

Download or read book Fluid Bed Conversion of Uranium Tetrafluoride to Uranium Hexafluoride written by G. J. Vogel and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments conducted in a 2 1/2-inch diameter reactor have demonstrated that the continuous fluorination of uranium tetrafluoride to hexafluoride with elemental fluorine in a fluidized bed is possible. Practicable fluorine efficiencies and conversion rates were attained with good temperature control in experiments with refined uranium tetrafluoride. Runs made with crude uranium tetrafluoride, derived from the reduction and hydro-fluorination of ore concentrates produced by the acid-leach process, indicated that these also can be processed at satisfactory rates and efficiencies. Uranium tetrafluoride derived from carbonate-leached ore concentrate gave a lower production rate and was more difficult to process because of sintering tendencies.

Book Laboratory Investigations in Support of Fluid Bed Fluoride Volatility Processes

Download or read book Laboratory Investigations in Support of Fluid Bed Fluoride Volatility Processes written by R. L. Jarry and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work in the development of fluid-bed fluoride volatility processes is described. In these processes, uranium and plutonium in spent nuclear fuels are converted into hexafluoride compounds in a fluid-bed reactor. The uranium and plutonium hexafluorides are volatile and can be separated from fission products, cladding, and alloying materials by techniques such as vaporization and distillation. The experimental work was directed toward devising a fluorination procedure for uranium and plutonium dioxides which would result in a high degree of removal of uranium and plutonium as hexafluorides.

Book Advanced Inorganic Fluorides Synthesis Characterization and Applications

Download or read book Advanced Inorganic Fluorides Synthesis Characterization and Applications written by T. Nakajima and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-05-12 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes recent progresses in inorganic fluorine chemistry. Highlights include new aspects of inorganic fluorine chemistry, such as new synthetic methods, structures of new fluorides and oxide fluorides, their physical and chemical properties, fluoride catalysts, surface modifications of inorganic materials by fluorination process, new energy conversion materials and industrial applications. Fluorine has quite unique properties (highest electronegativity; very small polarizability). In fact, fluorine is so reactive that it forms fluorides with all elements except with the lightest noble gases helium, neon and argon. Originally, due to its high reactivity, fluoride chemistry faced many technical difficulties and remained undeveloped for many years. Now, however, a large number of fluorine-containing materials are currently produced for practical uses on an industrial scale and their applications are rapidly extending to many fields. Syntheses and structure analyses of thermodynamically unstable high-oxidation-state fluorides have greatly contributed to inorganic chemistry in this decade. Fluoride catalysts and surface modifications using fluorine are developing a new field of fluorine chemistry and will enable new syntheses of various compounds. The research on inorganic fluorides is now contributing to many chemical energy conversion processes such as lithium batteries. Furthermore, new theoretical approaches to determining the electronic structures of fluorine compounds are also progressing. On the industrial front, the use of inorganic fluorine compounds is constantly increasing, for example, in semi-conductor industry. "Advanced Inorganic Fluorides: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications" focuses on these new features in inorganic fluorine chemistry and its industrial applications. The authors are outstanding experts in their fields, and the contents of the book should prove to be of valuable assistance to all chemists, graduates, students and researchers in the field of fluorine chemistry.
