Download or read book The Prehistoric Tombs of Knossos written by Arthur J. Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prehistoric Tombs of Knossos: I. The Cemetery of Zafer Papoura; II. The Royal Tomb of Isopata The narrow capacity of these clay chests has given rise to the idea that they were simple ossuaries, and that the bones had been placed in them after the decomposition of the flesh. Where, as is sometimes the case, more than one skull occurs inside the chest, there may be some warrant to this idea, but evidence like that afforded by the larnaw found in Grave No. 80 below, shows that the body of the deceased was actually stowed away in the clay receptacle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the inception of Minoan archaeology, studies pertaining to tombs and tomb deposits have played seminal roles in our understanding of Minoan culture and the reconstruction of Bronze Age society. For several geographical areas and chronological periods of Cretan history, tombs are the most abundant source of data. Each author in this volume takes a clear and distinct approach to the data, including some that emphasize political geography on multi-regional and multi-scalar levels, some that examine the commemoration of the dead and of the community for legitimizing purposes but also for maintaining and/or creating elite positions in social systems, and others that underline the overlap between mortuary rituals and religion. The aim of this volume is not to present all tombs in all periods on Crete comprehensively, but the breadth of these papers is intended generate a discourse not just among archaeologists working in different areas and time periods on Crete but also among archaeologists in Greece and a broader anthropological audience.

Book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania

Download or read book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania written by Lorenc Bejko and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burial tumulus of Lofkend lies in one of the richest archaeological areas of Albania (ancient "Illyria"), home to a number of burial tumuli spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages of later prehistory. Some were robbed long ago, others were reused for modern burials; few were excavated under scientific conditions. Modern understanding of the pre- and protohistory of Illyria has largely been shaped by the contents of such burial mounds. What inspired the systematic exploration of Lofkend by UCLA was more than the promise of an unplundered necropolis; it was also a chance to revisit the significance of this tumulus and its fellows for the emergence of urbanism and complexity in ancient Illyria. In addition to artifacts, the recovery of surviving plant remains, bones, and other organic material contribute insights into the environmental and ecological history of the region.
