Book excerpt: In the project "Airline Passenger Satisfaction Analysis and Prediction Using Machine Learning and Deep Learning with Python," the aim was to analyze and predict passenger satisfaction in the airline industry. The project began with an extensive data exploration phase, wherein the dataset containing various features related to passenger experiences was thoroughly examined. The dataset was then preprocessed, ensuring data cleanliness and preparing it for further analysis. One of the initial steps involved understanding the distribution of categorized features within the dataset. By visualizing the distribution of these features, insights were gained into the prevalence of different categories, providing a preliminary understanding of passenger preferences and experiences. For the prediction aspect, machine learning models were employed, and a Grid Search approach was implemented to fine-tune hyperparameters and optimize model performance. This process allowed the identification of the best-performing model configuration, enhancing the accuracy of passenger satisfaction predictions. The models used are Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines, K-Nearest Neighbors, Decision Trees, Random Forests, Gradient Boosting, Extreme Gradient Boosting, Light Gradient Boosting. Going beyond traditional machine learning, a Deep Learning approach was introduced using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). This model, designed to capture intricate patterns and relationships within the data, showcased the potential of deep learning for improving predictive accuracy. The evaluation of both machine learning and deep learning models was centered around key metrics. The accuracy score was a primary indicator of model performance, reflecting the ratio of correctly predicted passenger satisfaction outcomes. Additionally, the Classification Report provided a comprehensive overview of precision, recall, and F1-score for each category, shedding light on the model's ability to classify passenger satisfaction levels accurately. Visualizing the results played a pivotal role in the project. The plotted Training and Validation Accuracy and Loss graphs offered insights into the convergence and generalization capabilities of the models. These visualizations helped in understanding potential overfitting or underfitting issues and guided the fine-tuning process. To assess the models' predictive performance, a Confusion Matrix was constructed. This matrix presented a clear breakdown of correct and incorrect predictions, facilitating an understanding of where the model excelled and where it struggled. Furthermore, scatter plots were utilized to visually compare the predicted values against the actual true values, offering a tangible representation of the models' effectiveness. Throughout the project, rigorous data preprocessing and feature engineering were integral to improving model accuracy. Features were appropriately scaled, and categorical variables were transformed using techniques like one-hot encoding, enabling models to efficiently learn from the data. The project also focused on the interpretability of the models, enabling stakeholders to comprehend the factors influencing passenger satisfaction predictions. This interpretability was essential for making informed business decisions based on the model insights. In conclusion, the project showcased a comprehensive approach to analyzing and predicting airline passenger satisfaction. Through meticulous data exploration, feature distribution analysis, machine learning model selection, hyperparameter tuning, and deep learning implementation, the project provided valuable insights for the airline industry. By utilizing a combination of machine learning and deep learning techniques, the project demonstrated a holistic approach to understanding and enhancing passenger experiences and satisfaction levels.

Poor estimates of demand lead to inadequate inventory controls and sub-optimal revenue performance. Forecasting for airline revenue management systems is inherently difficult. Competitive actions, seasonal factors, the economic environment, and constant fare changes are a few of the hurdles that must be overcome. In addition, the fact that most of the historical demand data is censored further complicates the problem. This dissertation examines the challenge of forecasting for an airline revenue management system in the presence of censored demand data. This dissertation analyzed the improvement in forecast accuracy that results from estimating demand by unconstraining the censored data. Little research has been done on unconstraining censored data for revenue management systems. Airlines tend to either ignore the problem or use very simple ad hoc methods to deal with it. A literature review explores the current methods for unconstraining censored data. Also, practices borrowed from areas outside of revenue management are adapted to this application. For example, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) and other imputation methods were investigated. These methods are evaluated and tested using simulation and actual airline data. An extension to the EM algorithm that results in a 41% improvement in forecast accuracy is presented.

Book excerpt: For over three decades the airline industry has continued to maintain a high profile in the public mind and in public policy interest. This high profile is probably not surprising. There does seem to be something inherently newsworthy about airplanes and the people and companies that fly them. The industry was one of the first major industries in the United States to undergo deregulation, in 1978. It thereby transitioned from a closely regulated sector (the former Civil Aeronautics Board tightly controlled everyt thing from prices to routes to entry) to one that is largely market oriented. The incumbent carriers transformed themselves from the point-to-point operators that the CAB had required to the hub-and-spokes structures that took better advantage of their network characteristics. Further, they transformed their pricing from the quite simple structures that the CAB had required to the highly differentiated/segmented pricing structures (“yield management”) that reached an apogee in the late 1990s. Some ca arriers, like American, Delta, and United, were better at this transition; others, like Pan American, TWA, and Eastern, were not. What the incumbent carriers did not do, however, was deal with their costly wage and work rules structures, which were an enduring legacy of their regulatory period. This legacy, when combined with the high-fare end of the yield-management pricing structure, has made them vulnerable to entry by new carriers with lower cost structures.

Book excerpt: This experiment assessed certain issues about the usefulness of predictive information: (1) the relative time criticality of failures, (2) the subjective utility of predictive information for different parameters or sensors, and (3) the preferred form and prediction time for displaying predictive information. To address these issues, three separate tasks were administered to 22 airline pilots. As shown by the data, these pilots preferred predictive information on parameters they considered vital to the safety of the flight. These parameters were related to the checklists performed first for alert messages. These pilots also preferred to know whether a parameter was changing abnormally and the time to a certain value being reached. Furthermore, they considered this information most useful during the cruise, the climb, and the descent phases of flight. Book excerpt: The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of a new device concept for helicopter contact flight training and the usefulness of such a device for predicting performance during subsequent flight training. The device was a commercially available captive helicopter attached to a ground effects machine. Two experimental groups of trainees received 3 1/4 or 7 1/4 hours of device training prior to primary helicopter training. In comparison with control groups, both device trained groups (a) were significantly less likely to be eliminated from subsequent flight training for reasons of flying deficiency; (b) required less flight training to attain the proficiency required to solo the helicopter; and (c) received higher grades during early training. Trainees who performed well on the training device tended to perform well during subsequent flight training. Instructors using devices such as this one need not be proficient in the helicopter used for subsequent flight training. (Author).
