Book Precis Indexing

Download or read book Precis Indexing written by Brian Burnham and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developmental research project described investigated means of improving access to materials in Ontario school resource centers to increase center utilization. The objective of this York Region project was to determine whether, by linking together the power of three computerized systems--MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloging), COM, (Computer Output Microform), and PRECIS (PREserved Context Index System)--many of the problems that had resulted in under use of school libraries could be solved. This report first places the project in a historical context, describes the purpose of PRECIS in terms of recent needs and opportunities, notes the international range of PRECIS applications, and relates the foregoing to the requirements of present school libraries. Problems associated with the catalogs normally used and how the three computerized systems deal with these problems are then described, as well as project accomplishments and future needs. The final section focuses on the program, begun at Aurora High School in 1972 with a test of PRECIS in the manual mode, that became the starting point for a school library cataloging, information retrieval, elementary/secondary mini-network. Explanations are given for how the various contract objectives were met or missed. Appendices include a glossary, a five-page bibliography, a map of the PRECIS mini-network, a supplement to the AUE Union Catalog, and samples from subject index microfiche and microfiche catalogs for elementary and secondary schools. Book COMPUTING A PR CIS ON SYSTEMS SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE

Download or read book COMPUTING A PR CIS ON SYSTEMS SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE written by Andreas Sofroniou and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of computing got smaller in 1993 in terms of both new ultra-small computing systems and the downsizing of giant computer corporations. Yet for all its shrinkage, the computing industry also reached out in a big way. The new, small computers were equipped with wireless networking systems, and home and office computers were offered the promise of networking with other computers worldwide on a data superhighway. Today, computing is affecting work and leisure alike, increasingly involved in factory and business operations, networking, defence, medicine, education and the domestic environment. Computers and their systems are influencing attitudes to privacy, employment and other social issues. To this effect, the reader must remember that the construction of a system is as complex as a house built in a swamp. It does, therefore, require careful planning and design. Just as a house must have an architect's plan, so does a system. It must have requirements, system objectives and a blueprint.

This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of an effort to formulate a list of principles underlying subject heading languages used in various subject access systems throughout the world, IFLA's Lisbon Satellite Meeting reviewed a broad spectrum of national systems and considered current issues in their development. By examining programs developed in Brazil, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S., the papers help to identify which principles each system considers fundamental and implicit and which had to be stated explicitly in usage instructions or subject heading codes. More general topics such as "International Tendencies in Terminology and Indexing" were also addressed.
