Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preachers Protests: Religion, Politics, Bigotry The letter in which President Boosevelt inveighed against the bigotry of voters who by their ballots introduce into politics a religious test for office was in such evident harmony with the letter and spirit of the Constitution of the United States that it elicited a cordial and generous approval from the press and people of the country. The A. P. A.'s themselves had not the courage openly to take issue with a document which was at once an echo and an enforcement of that religious liberty and freedom of conscience which is the boast of the country and the supposed inheritance of its every citizen. Although the Presidents letter vigorously assailed the very object of their organization - the exclusion of Catholics from positions of honor and emolument especially political office - the A. P. A.'s, regardless of law and justice in their opposition to Catholics were not reckless enough to find fault with a letter which only those could consistently oppose who were prepared to support a thesis against the Constitution of the country. Book excerpt: Ever since the modern state of Malawi came into existence more than a hundred years ago, religion has played its role in the history of the country, and has interacted with politics and society in many ways, such as with the early Blantyre Mission, the Chilembwe Rising, and the struggle against the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyassaland. This book presents two preachers, Elliot Kamwana and Wilfred Gudu, who, in their different ways and at different times, challenged British colonial power which ruled over Malawi at that time.

Book excerpt: Here is a skillful tracing of two tracks in the evolution of musical genres that have evolved from black religion. Songs of protest developed from the spiritual through social-gospel hymnody to culminate in songs of the civil-rights movement and the blues. Born in rebellion, they envision the Kingdom of God.Songs of praise, by contrast, express adoration. Beginning with the "ring-shout," Spencer follows the history of intoned declamation through the tongue song, Holiness-Pentecostal music, and the chanted sermon of the black preacher. Spencer's approach, termed theomusicology, unlocks the wealth of African-American sacred music with a theological key. The result is a fascinating account of a people's struggle with God in history.

Book Preaching Black Lives Matter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology that asks, “What does it mean to be church where Black lives matter?” Prophetic imagination would have us see a future in which all Christians would be free of the soul-warping belief and practice of racism. This collection of reflections is an incisive look into that future today. It explains why preaching about race is important in the elimination of racism in the church and society, and how preaching has the ability to transform hearts. While programs, protests, conferences, and laws are all important and necessary, less frequently discussed is the role of the church, specifically the Anglican Church and Episcopal Church, in ending systems of injustice. The ability to preach from the pulpit is mandatory for every person, clergy or lay, regardless of race, who has the responsibility to spread the gospel. For there’s a saying in the Black church, “If it isn’t preached from the pulpit, it isn’t important.”

Book Freedom from Speech

Download or read book Freedom from Speech written by Greg Lukianoff and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a surreal time for freedom of speech. While the legal protections of the First Amendment remain strong, the culture is obsessed with punishing individuals for allegedly offensive utterances. And academia - already an institution in which free speech is in decline - has grown still more intolerant, with high-profile "disinvitation" efforts against well-known speakers and demands for professors to provide "trigger warnings" in class. In this Broadside, Greg Lukianoff argues that the threats to free speech go well beyond political correctness or liberal groupthink. As global populations increasingly expect not just physical comfort but also intellectual comfort, threats to freedom of speech are only going to become more intense. To fight back, we must understand this trend and see how students and average citizens alike are increasingly demanding freedom from speech.
